Believe me guys they got the message. Wasnt like they were all cackling evilly and giving me and the reporter shifty eyes when they came down. Everything was nice overall. I seriously doubt theres any sort of hidden agenda in this move.

Well we were going to, but the hounds we usually release were all at the vets today.

Sounds like something Bungie would do... have you ever thought about joining together in world domination? Just seems like a logical choice to do. Image IPB

Alright I'm mad.

This means Thomas didn't get his cupcake! Maybe he went down to the youth shelter and stole one. I sure hope so.

-Nice touch Chris... its not often I give them. Infact I cant remember having done it before, but plus 1 internets for connecting with the fanbase.

This. Is. Important.

BioWare, take heed. Something that a lot af the fanbase has FELT has not been the case, is precisely connecting with them, leveling with them.

I liked the previous blunt reply from you too, PR be damned.

Remember - the polished PR statements, if used too often, and if being too polished, may actually work AGAINST the company. Just sayin'.

Maybe honesty sometimes is the way to go, being on the safe side all the time doesn't come off as human. That means the company MAY be regarded by some customers as being too distant from human responses, just based on the company being on the safe side all the time.

Sometimes the blue collar response works better than the white collar response.

I agree that most members of the movement didn't feel hatred. I would say that many of the more vocal fans did go on at length about how Bioware sold out. How they would never buy anything again. There were personal attacks, and bombed review scores. Every statement has been read between the lines and often twisted.

The cupcake move does not fall into that category, it was a very cool way to deal with it, the same as MOST fans being relatively calm but critical in their responses.

Well, to be fair, if we told BioWare we hated the ending and wanted them to change it, but that we'd still keep buying all of their products regardless, they'd have no reason to listen to us.

Our dollars speak louder than our voices ever will.

In all honesty it is because we are a business. What we say and do when we interact with the public matters and will be remembered. As such we make sure that our replies for things are worded carefully and correctly. That is why many times you will see a "PR" style message out of me or other staff.

Still.... every once in a while... I go rogue. PR hates me.

Well, then PR doesn't understand that these days people are pretty much over saturated with "PR talk". From corporations, to politicians.....all we ever get is a song and dance. A whole lotta words, while not saying anything at all.

It's soulless.

But, for me, it wasn't about if you ate the cupckaes, or not. It was about that second paragraph in your PR style message.

It gave me the impression that the subtle, but important factor in deciding what feedback to pass on to the team was if it was all positive.

You could have left that part out. Nobody expected you to eat the cupcakes. Well, I didn't. Like I said before, that was a lot of cupcakes. But it was the reason you cited for giving them away that threw me off.

Ah, but such are the pitfalls of the vagueries of PR speak.

Personally, I actually did expect Bioware to eat the cupcakes. But that was mainly because I sent them chocolates to thank them for NWN patch 1.69 and they were happy to eat those. To be fair, a single box of chocolates wouldn't make much of a presentation to a children's shelter and I am happy with the outcome of this cupcake drive!

I still kind of thought it was supposed to be a reward for their hard work, but like in a semi-ironic "good but come on the ending sucked" kind of way.

On the other hand, some kids just had the absolute best day ever, so that's fine.

We could of course supply cupcakes for both via a second fundraiser. I didn't get to donate the first time...

or hell, just insist they don't donate the Marauder Shields cake anywhere and give them that.

People are spinning this incorrectly to say we are not listening to "negative feedback" and how bad we are and etcetera.

Wrong.

We did listen. At no time did we try to stop Fuss for making the cupcakes or delivering them (this would be unfair to Fuss and to the fans who sent the cupcakes and a generally dickish thing to do). When the cupcakes reached us, we did not refuse to take them (again, unfair to the people who sent them). I, along with Fernando, Mark and Alistair went down, met with Shadow Wrought, gave him some swag for being brave enough to show up and keep us honest and took them upstairs. We took all of the included messages out of the bags and boxes so we would not lose them (again, cuz we're listening). We did not throw them away, ignore them till they got stale or not use them as what they are, food. We chose not to eat them and gave them to a needy charity.

The message REACHED us. Whether we ate the cupcakes, threw them in teh garbage or donated them to charity is secondary to us getting the message, right? If we had (somehow) frozen time, put them in a display case for all time as a reminder of the message sent by fans, this would have been the same thing.

Us actually eating the cupcakes or not should not have been the issue. The issue was fans creatively sent us a message expressing their love for Mass Effect as a franchise, but dislike over the endings. This message was delivered to us and we got it loud and clear.

Thanks, Mr. Priestly. I rescind my criticism in that other thread.

Love you guys. Love 99.999% of your ME games. :)

That makes me happy. The first post was less thrilling because it sounded like the fact that we were trying to express love for the game(s) as well as disappointment over the ending was being overlooked or misinterpreted. I'm glad to see that this was not the case.

I'm glad the notes are being perused and that a number of needy kids' sweet tooths are being catered too, but I'm also sad for those Bioware employees who were looking forward to the yummy cupcakes. At least Fuss is nearby so they can always go grab some ;)

Finally, I must requote this because it is so well done:

Eain wrote...

Hey Bioware, you know what I find funny?

You're
being offered three colours to choose from, and using your own critical
thinking you've made your own decision and said "We choose option #4".

Giving Shepard that same choice would go a long way to showing you understand where this went wrong.

Holding the line in one hand while using the other to eat a cupcake :P

P.S. - Thanks for the pictures and detailed account of the "event" @ everyone who put up pictures and detailed accounts ... Sorry, it's 1am and I can't keep my eyes open long enough to hunt down the pic posts for names, I figure ya'll know who you are...

Edited for the fact that I had written "some kids" meaning an unknown quantity of kids in my own tired head, which on re-read sounded like I was being dismissive of the kids, which I wasn't... Ugh, I need to go sleep LOL

There! That's so much better already, it reduces the "Meh" feeling to a minimum. Seriously, PR-Talk is never positive. It might sometimes be required for whatever reasons your lawyers make up, but it's never what fans want to hear, is usually considered just soulless blabla and nobody buys it anyway. Hope the donaters are cheered up now too. :wizard:

Point taken.

I guess I just come at it from a different perspective. If you loved everything up to that point, and really enjoyed the work that was put into the rest of it, I don't quite undestand the desire to financially hurt hte people who made it. I get the dissatisfaction, and the desire to see it rectified. I am not sure if it was necessary to review bomb and threaten to make that point.

The message has gotten through, in fact I'm sure its repeatedly gotten through throughout this campaign.

The fact that Bioware have commented on the cupcakes since they were delivered, taken photos, and are now able to give them away to a nearby shelter, simply reinforces how this is something not being ignored.

The message behind this wasn't to show how yummy cupcakes taste, it was about raising fan awareness, and its absolutely worked. Kudos to all involved.

Thanks for that, Chris.  As I mentioned before, I really feel that this event has made the Bioware/fan relationship more intimate :wizard:.  And this kind of reaffirms that feeling.

Holding the line because we care.
