Can I say the cynical thing?

It doesn't matter if the majority want a voice protagonist or if a voice protagonist makes their gaming experience better, what matters is that people expect a voiced protagonist and more people will continue to expect that in the future.

If BioWare came out with a game without a voiced protagonist, people would consider it a step backwards. It's become a standard feature for them.

Skyrim is not voiced is it ? (serious question I've not played it)
Witcher2 ? (waiting for 360 version)

If they are going more towards JRPG format though I agree people will miss a voice badly having played something like FFXIII-2.

Skyrim is silent, the Witcher is voiced. I believe the upcoming Diablo III will be silent as well.

Darksiders II is moving from a puzzle game to more of an RPG one and will be voiced. Fable: Journey silent. The Final Fantasy games I assume will be voiced. Risen 2 will be voiced (?).

The Secret World and Guild Wars II are both silent, but TOR isn't.

Was the silent protagonist well received?

The feedback for DA:O was mostly positive but I do recall people comparing Shepard to the Warden and complaining about the silent Warden.

I wonder if the developers switched to voiced because they thought silent was poorly received or because they liked the voiced PC more.

I think Mass Effect was a revelation for Bioware.  It was new and exciting and very shiny.  And the shiny caught their eye and they forgot that not all that glitters is gold... err... the opposite of that I mean.  Yeah.

I had a hell of a lot of fun wtiih FFXIII-2.

But it's a different kind of game. You have no variability in the story telling that's going to be broken by the voice. You don't have double the cost voicing that results of having a protagonist that can be male or female. Imagine, if Shepard had simply been a male predefined character, the game probably could have had a large chunk of extra content in every iteration, at no extra cost in time or money.

Voicing the protagonist is not an issue of immersion, it's an issue of money. What do you lose and what do you gain.

Is that so? I wonder if that will become the norm in the next decade.

Considering how successful Skyrim was with a silent protagonist, and how well New Vegas did with a silent protagonist, I don't see why that would be the case.

I meant for MMOs.

The Old Republic and Guild Wars II are both online games. I expect that Blizzard's next MMO will set the tone for the industry though.

There was a lot in Mass Effect worth keeping.  The one big thing wrong with ME was the voice+paraphrase.  But I loved the combat system.  I loved the open exploration and the Mako.

Everything I liked in ME they threw away in ME2.

Can't speak for Skyrim but in New Vegas you barely notice. It's not a cinematic game. Pulling off a cinematic game with a silent protagonist, don't think that's going to happen.

I agree that ME was gold.  My point was that DA:O was another shiny, rare, expensive thing like rubies maybe  and Bioware decided to flood the market with gold.

I prefer ME2 but then I'm not a big fan of generic fluff in my games.

EXCEPT for the romances.  Uck.  ME2 wasn't much better, they just added more of them.  The third time was a charm, though.  Although I still would have liked to have the LI show more interest at important events, I enjoyed Kaidan thoroughly.

Bug face, lizard man, xenophobe, black stereotype, and bald psychopath. Sounds like a particularly twisted S&M porn.

Actually the xenophobe is pretty cool. Because xenophobia isn't exactly out of place, whereas having a romance with a bug face, or lizardman is disturbing. Honestly disturbing.

Oh yeah, and backwards knees tank girl. The obsession around that one is the most disturbing thing of all.

Just a quick remark regarding D3, no, it is fully voiced.

I've said it before, I'll say it again.  Romances are like Pokemon to me.  Gotta catch 'em all.

Does the PC have actual conversations, or are we talking sound bytes like "I will clear the monastery" and "Death to demons!"?

I come pretty darn close. All except for the "has sex with aliens" part.

I was watching a 'Let's Play' of the demo and it looked like the NPCs had most of the spoken dialogue but the character had sound bytes.  Not sure if that will change or if it differs in later parts of the game.
