Seriously, Americans have this weird thing about nudity.

As an American, yes I don't understand it. Inconsistency with profanity is another one I don't understand. This is a discussion forum for a relatively violent game where the characters utter profane words with some regularity and even has sex scenes, yet you are not able to see me utter even the word that describes a female dog, ****.

Unless you were referring to an actual female dog and meant to be insulting towards that dog (why woudl you?), there was no reason to do it, and a lot of Americans are sick of seeing vulgarities uttered all over the place.

but in reality it is more because someone could sue BioWare for ruining their childhood if the world implied was visible, and since we're talking about the US, they would probably win.

Why does Bioware avoid nudity in the Mass Effect sequels. The games are clearly for adults and they have relationships at their core and a sex scene if you took the time to devellop the relationship. So why do they avoid the nudity or even partial nudity.

It's not like we are asking for porn but the sex scenes are really bland and boring. In an age where games like Heavy Rain, God of War III, Dante's Inferno, Duke Nukem Forever, Grand Theft Auto IV... contain nudity without stirring any controversy, I don't see why Bioware is afraid of assuming that nudity if part of their adult universe.

I agree the romance scenes were toned down to PG rating  kiddie level. I'm an adult i want to play games for adults not kiddies.

Videogames tend to get a lot of stick for nudity even when their rated 18+/Mature. So for some developers it's best to avoid nudity

In America the media tends to be very touchy (and hypocritical) about sex in videogames. Look at the hysteria Fox kicked up about the extremely tame scenes in ME1. Seriously you'll see more explicit stuff in a PG13 flick. For some it's not worth the hassle I imagine.

Plus it's not like you have to show full nudity to imply sex and an adult relationship. Plenty of the dialogue and romance scenes did that. Liara's scene in the third for example delivers that without needing to be explicit.

I don't care about nudity. I thought the romance scenes were fine, but it's just odd that Traynor likes to shower in her underwear. Couldn't we just get shots from the leg down and shoulder up?

"Look at that sideboob. Check out this side boob. How about that side boob? that turn you on? Well it shouldn't, because that's MY side boob"

Support side boob DLC.

eh. I WOULD like to see what Tali looks like out of that suit, hell, it would have been nice to show her actually taking parts of her suit off before fading to black <.< makes it seem more realistic rather than "suit is completely on when sex starts. fade to black. Suit is still on but its assumed she just finished putting it back on" lol but I dont really care about the lack of nudity.

Yeah I know...Its kinda creepy.  But Its allready an M rated game in the states, use that to your advantage and dont make things awkward.  I mean not to beat a dead horse but yeah showering in the underwear ...it just dont add up.

I agree with this, in america they water down everything to make it acceptable if children accidently gets a hold of it.   Look it up PG-13 is the best movie rating right now... nobody wants a hard R becasue it wont gross at the box office.  This game is for mature audiences ..that is why ME1 is still my favorite its a mature hard hitting sci-fi experence that treats you like an adult.

I'd actually be curious to see how much sales would of gone down if Mass Effect went from M to AO.

Sales would be at zero in the states with that rating. Every US retailer has a policy against selling AO rated games.

It's why Manhunt had to be delayed and have parts chopped out, and why R* had to rerelease GTA:SA after launch due to the sex mini-games cheat code in the original version. EBGames/Gamestop wouldn't even take original release GTA:SA titles as trade-ins for that very reason.

Japan, Germany, and Australia are among the worst in regard to censorship in games. America is getting better, but has a rabid media that can draw attention to just about any subject for the sake of morals and sanctity.

The real reason Bioware doesn't include nudity imo is that they are trying to reach a general audience, and by that I mean well under 18 yrs old ( the writing in the game reflects this). And no one in America under that age is legally allowed to see ****** in a vidya game, so they gotta cover up.

Not true. Talk to an Australian or a German Gamer. Here in germany we get titles rated "Adult only" which are nevertheless cut and purposefully made into a "low violence" version.

Left4Dead for example doesn't have any blood in the german version. Australians even have it worse. They don't even can have a syringe in their games.

Seriously, i am trading "not seeing any blood or gore" for "not seeing boobies" any time of the day. Nothing worse than shooting an enemy and having no Ragdoll Animation, No blood and them vanishing in thin air.. like in L4D 1.

And that game is rated "suitable for 18 and above". With 18 your considered a full adult here, but in video games your not allowed to see stuff  movies "suitable for 12 and above" show. Congo (the movie) for example is rated 12 and above and starts with an eye flying into someones hands.

James Bond Casino Royale (i think it was casino royale).. the infamous torture scene... a scene like that in a video game rated Adult Only? Impossible. The movie however is 16 and above.

Believe me.. "no boobies" might be sad and from my side rather funny... but being  legally and adult for well over a decade and having games censored so they don't show blood or a bullet time kill... (try imagining Fallout3 without any blood and splatter or boodyparts flying away in that ludacruis manner) .. and listening to your politicans calling those games "killer games" which apperently make our youth running amok in the streets... thats quite making you feel patronized.

the weirdest was traynor taking a shower in her bra. why not just pull a liara and show her from the shoulders on up?

Nah, she was using the shower but kept the door open to continue a conversation with her commanding officer. She was bathing more for the feeling of a nice shower than for actually bathing. And she wasn't sure if getting to use the shower was a romantic attempt or a genuinely kind offer from a woman who won't be weirded out by having her shower used by an underling.

Yeah, it may look silly, but it makes sense.

Vulgarities and context are just off in America. I don't know how it is in other places.

Take my job for example. It's a retail store. If a song comes on (we use XM radio, so it's random) that has a cuss word in it, we must immediately change it to a "safe" station, so as to not offend customers. Yet one of those "safe" stations is Top 40, a station that plays almost nothing but songs with heavy sexual innuendo and blunt lyrics with questionable morality. Having Gaga say "I wanna take a ride on your disco stick" is acceptable, but having Rob Thomas casually say "no one else could take this **** from me" is entirely unacceptable. Huh-wha...?

I mean, there's a song I've heard multiple times in there by Beck in which the lyrics talk about killing a girl. But he doesn't cuss and it has a fun beat, so who cares?

Our morals are way mixed up.

Staindgrey your point goes right along with the one I made a dozen pages ago. The Hunger Games is PG13 and it shows the violent deaths of a dozen kids. Yet if it had an F bomb or a ****** in it it would have been R.

So apparently 14 year olds can watch kids murder other kids but they can't handle seeing breasts.

Would you shower in the nude with your commanding officer watching? If so you are a weird kind of guy.

That's why no sane German buys their games in Germany. There is a reason we have Amazon Austria and the Internet.
