I don't know if this is a bug or not but my Shale character is absolutely useless in combat. All he does is stand in one place and he never fights. Even after the battle is over unless my PC character talks to him he will remain standing in one place.  Has anyone else had this problem with him? I am playing the 360 version of the game. Thanks.

Actually mine does this every so often. Only started after I got the final combat skill in the fire tree? Killing blow or something, that uses your Stam to increase it's damage. Anyhow, if it spams that during a fight and leaves itself with no stam at the end sometimes it'll just stand still and I'll have to switch to control the char or it'll go back to normal if I move the party to a different area so it auto follows. If it gets targeted it'll also make it snap out of it but it's not been that big of an issue yet.

Shale has to be put into one of several modes. One mode is the "hit things" mode the other is the "stand and radiate good feelings" mode. I was trying to figure out for a long, long time why I couldn't use any Shale powers and you can't unless he is in the proper mode.

Shale also bugs out for me once in a while.

Can't say if it's related to any one mode but yeah sometimes he will just stand there in the middle of a fight and not do anything like he's trying to walk somewhere but is stuck. And yes free mode is on. I usually have to manually order him to go somewhere behind his current location and that frees him up, but it is highly annoying to have to do that.

She*

Shale is anything but useless, she's the best dragon killing tank in the game (considering she can't be one shot killed by that wonderful chomp attack) freeing up your offensive mage space for someone else to tag along. When she's not tanking dragons and just the common folk she has two AoE stuns and a huge attack she can use on elites.

She's also the best ranged person in the game, with a bolder toss that knocks everyone back and down, she can also paralaize people while in this form.

Oh, when she's offensive? Huge AoE ground attack around here, huge damage punch, and another huge damage punch.

And then she has the buff form, really nice to drop her right next to Alistar or yourself if you're a tank and just rape face of everything, just let Wynne sit in back and heal mmkay?

I've had shale get stuck in another part of a dungeon and I had to go back and try to interact. After that didn't work I shut the game off and turned it back on and everything was fine. There are bugs. Just saying.

Shale is the best melee character.. The problem you're describing happens not only with Shale saddly. Luckily it rarely happened to me.

My PC cunning rogue is suffering the same thing when I'm not in control. A mob he's attacking goes down and he fails to move on to the next... I'm going to experiment tonight and see if it's something related to how I built my tactics..

At the risk of stating the obvious, are you remembering to toggle "move freely" on? Defaults to "h" on the PC, dunno about consoles. If it's off, party members will not auto-follow, and they'll not move in combat. Even if you send one to attack, he'll stand still if the enemy moves out of range, and he won't seek out a new target when it dies.

The player party AI will sometimes get hung up on tactics like "clustered" especially for melee users. You might have Sten right next to you with "use 2h sweep on clustered enemies", and he'll choose the cluster of archers. That might make him just stand there.

I tend to micro manage most attacks for my party so I can coordinate when they land (mostly for shatters). I have had far fewer issues doing this then letting the game auto-pilot beyond basic attacking. Well, I do keep "attack nearest mage -> Crushing Prison" on any mage with that spell in my group. That works like a champ, and I have a hatred for enemy mages in general.

I've noticed this happening occasionally, so I drop in "Enemy: Nearest Visible -> Attack" in the last tactic slot. I've yet to see a character with that do the whole "standing around yawning in the middle of combat" thing after adding that. My guess is that there're some tactic combinations that cause the AI to simply stand around and do nothing unless certain conditions are met.

This can happen if you have a bad "Self: Any" requirement for an ability or item with a recharge. They'll sit completely still until the ability is finished recharging, use it again, sit still...repeat ad naseum.

I had "Self: Any" "Use Item: Deathroot Extract" on Zevran and your exact scenario would happen to him.

Make sure his tactics are ok. Make sure your party is not set on hold position.

Hmmm... I was a little hasty to reply and went a little off-topic, as I thought you had no mode active or something, so I wrote a post about shale's abilities... Anyway, since it's written already I'll submit it though it's a little off-topic. Hope it still helps a bit :P

Shale has 4 Modes available. Every mode is a sustained ability that allows Shale to use some abilities while also providing passive boni while at it. Activated abilities that work for a specific Mode, almost always provide a related passive bonus while the mode is active.

From top to bottom they are:

Melee DPS Mode(Pulverizing Blows):

Boni it provides(and gets with actives): Attack, Damage, Armor Penetration

Skills:

Slam: Direct Hit that does extra damage and can stun the opponent.

Quake: AoE attack centered on Shale that repeatedly damages opponents. I think it has a chance to drop them to the ground, not sure.

Killing Blow: Uses up all remaining fatigue to cause massive damage with a single-target blow

Tanking Mode(StoneHeart):

Boni it provides: Armour, Defence, Increased Chance for enemies to hit Shale, Increased Threat

Skills:

Bellow: AoE stun centered on shale. I think it causes extra threat too.

Stone Roar: Single Target Taunt

Regenerating Burst: AoE (spirit?) damage and stun if the enemies don't pass a check.

Ranged Support(Rock Mastery):

Boni it provides: Increased Ranged defence for party members around Shale, reduced armour, some others I'm not sure I remember correctly...

Skills:

Hurl Rock: Shoots a rock at a targeted location dealing damage and knocking enemies down. Small radius, ranged target.

Earth Grasp: AoE targeted stun. You select an area and it stuns people within it. Very useful.

Stone Barrage: AoE Damage over time targeted attack. Like blizzard/inferno/tempest, but it does physical damage.

Keep in mind that even in ranged support mode, shale still attacks melee, she just provides boni to party archers and against enemy archers and has access to ranged skills.

Support Mode(Stone Aura):

This mode is different than the others. When it's activated, shale stands still and unable to move or attack, and projects an aura around her. While in that aura the party gets a tremendous amount of boni, while the enemies suffer from debuffs. Don't remember the whole list, but it incudes: Defence, armour, attack, spellpower, stamina/mana regen and others. And enemies get slowed and have some defences reduced, not sure about the full list. The skills of this tree are all passive that add the aforementioned boni...
