I just saw the scene where Kai Leng attempts to kill the Salarian ambassador.

To reach the ambassador, Shepherd breaks the glass with one shot from their pistol.

Then I started to wonder, why the heck didn't they do that to rescue Ensign Rodriguez?

Instead of putting one bullet through the glass, they smash it with the end of an assault rifle.
An assault rifle with Infinite Ammo I might add, it was the Prothean one!
And failing there, I had at least three other weapons.
The Geth Plasma Shotgun would have been particularly useful to break the glass (charged shot).

So why did Ensign Prangley need to use his biotic powers to break the glass and ultimately, get dead?

And just because I can't resist the pun:

Windows are structural weaknesses.

Do you mean Grissom academy? I don´t remember anyone dying rescuing Rodriguez. Did you tell them to hold or to attack?

Sounds like if you don't have Jack thats how it plays out.

To me it made sense that Jack was being awesome and smashing everything, but I guess it doesn't quite work the same with a different character. Something tells me the butt of an M8 is somehow tougher than bullets since you use it to melee enemies normally. Maybe shepard didn't want to fire indoors (in the room they were in)?

Yes, I didn't have Subject Zero, so Prangley had to step up and take her job.

Don't ask what happened to Miss Zero, I pushed her in front of a bullet......

I got no options whatsoever as far as I can tell, he just charges out there and gets killed.

Not the way I would have handled it though, given my choice.
I also had EDI and Liara along for the ride.
I'm assuming EDI is strong enough to put her fists through the glass and Liara, well, Asari biotic and all.
So, my order would have been to have one (or both!) break the glass for me.
And then we could charge at the Cerberus troopers trying to capture Rodriguez.

Hmm, another silly question, there's three of us, why didn't we just shoot the bad guys after the glass was broken?
Would have saved us a whole lot of trouble!

It wouldn't be so dramatic. You must know that dramatic exits give you style.

Because the window you attempt to break at Grissom Academy is a barrier between the habitation area and the shuttlebay, and would therefore be made of much tougher material than the simple standard window in the Executor's office.

In theory, when Shep and co. left Grissom, their opening the outer shuttle bay doors would decompress most of the station, as there would no longer be a seal between Orion Hall and open vacuum.

tl;dr: Cutscene Pistol of Doom
