With the recent “Epic Fail!” ending from BioWare’s much anticipated release of
Mass Effect 3 (for the record, I loved the game, just not the ending), I’ve been wondering; if I had the capabilities, what would be awesome and help me forget about the recent events that have shattered my life into a thousand pieces leaving me feeling empty and unfulfilled? I knew I wanted a better
Mass Effect fix than what 3 left me with, but I didn’t feel like rereading the books or comics, replaying over a hundred hours in 1 & 2, and I have the soundtrack to all three games on a quick playlist in my media player that seems to be constantly playing in the background. So I started to wonder, what medium has BioWare not conquered yet with
Mass Effect? Then, like a lightning bolt striking an ancient and dieing tree out in the middle of a forest, it hit me. You can probably guess where this is going, right? Yep, a movie. With all the information that the men and women of BioWare stuffed into the
Mass Effect franchise, I found myself wondering about the beginning of man’s rise to power within the universe. I know what you’re thinking, “Wait a minute, you said ‘movie.’ Why not make one about Shepard?” Because, my fun little heathens, if they were to make a movie about Commander Shepard, chances are that it will wind up sucking more than a vacuum cleaner on the carpet of a hoarder who hasn’t cleaned in over twenty years and who has an obsession with cats and birds. Besides, can you actually name a movie that was based on a video game that didn’t make you want to cry at how horrible a job they did? “Resident Evil!” Moving on. “Mortal Combat!” I said…Alright, I’ll accept that one with glee and joy as I bounce around. “Silent Hill! Hitman!” Dude, shut up! That’s enough. “BloodRayne!” NO! NO, NO, NO! We are NEVER to speak of that movie having EVER been put into production! Now, where was I? Right, right. All of us have our own ideas of how Shepard’s story should be, thus the video game and all our fun playthroughs. This idea with making a movie based in the
Mass Effect universe is to give us something new and exciting, also another reason for our eyeballs to bleed in pleasure. Something that will further engross us and, hopefully, others into our favorite plane of existence. I mean, wouldn’t you like to sit back and watch a movie about how we found the Prothean cache on Mars and were able to finally decipher it and start to make our own FTL drives and mass effect field spaceships, thus leading us into the First Contact Wars, or the Relay 314 Incident, whichever side you want to take part in.
Ah, the First Contact Wars, now that would be an epic movie. We would actually get to see what happened on Shanxi instead of just hearing about how it was a pentacle moment in the war. We could watch as Ashley Williams’ grandfather handed it over to the Turians. About how we were finally accepted into the fold by the Council. You know, to get a sense and a feel for how it all started and where all the characters are truly coming from. I think it would be awesome! Besides,
Halo got a movie, why not
Mass Effect?
But how to make it? Live action, cgi, cartoon. Then what kind of style? Standard, documentary, ect. Who’s going to produce it? Who’s going to direct it? Who’s going to play what role? So many questions to answer. Personally, I would love to see it done in the standard format and cgi. I’m not talking
Beowulf cgi, heaven’s forbid, more like Pixar’s
Toy Story, just not so kid friendly. I would even be excited to watch it if it was done like
Avatar, a nice mix of live action and cgi. It could work; just as long as they don’t let M. Night Shyamalan, Tim Burton, or Uwe Boll anywhere near the production set. Now I’m not saying these are “bad” directors, *cough* except the latter *cough*, but it just wouldn’t be their style of storytelling. Speaking of people not to let on set, Please, Please, Please, for the love of the Maker, DO NOT let Fox have the rights to any
Mass Effect movies, EVER! By now, we’ve all seen what they did to X-Men, yes? I recommend getting Marvel Studios on board, but that’s just me. One of their employees has to be an active gamer and would want to do it justice.
Anyway, that was my epiphany for the day. Thanks for reading.
