On my first playthrough as a Rogue I bought a book that gives mages a free spell and tried to use it on Morrigan, but it wouldn't work. Later in that same game I accidentally used another book on Leliana and it actually worked and I had to reload and use it on myself.

In another game it let me use one of the books on Morrigan, but then I couldn't use any books on Leliana.

I'm confused as to what is going on here, does anyone know when you can and cannot use these books on your companions? To me right now I can't see any rhyme or reason as to why sometimes I can and sometimes I cannot.

Thanks.

Some of the books are restricted by class (warrior, mage, or rogue only). But I've had success using books on all of my characters.

Also this is completely offtopic but does anyone know what exactly "Improves Blood Magic" and "Improves Backstabs" actually means? What are the exact benefits of these?

Yes I know some are restricted by class but I mean I've used Mage books on Morrigan that just do nothing and aren't consumed and won't work, and same for physical ones on Leliana.

But then sometimes they do work and I can't figure it out.

yes they do work on party members, but you have to be out in the world/towns and not in camp.

That would make sense.  Only the active character can use items, and only the PC can be active in the camp.

there is a bug with the books, that if you have both a magebook and a warrior/roguebook in your inventory, both of them wont work. at least that is happening for me on the pc version.

Thank you very much for this information, this is definitely what was happening to me because I was not trying to use them in the camp as the other people here posted, but that is true that you can't use them in camp on companions.

Thanks again for the replies and the information.
