I did it on accident, it just puts you back on the path eventually.

You can but only so far, you will eventually be turned around in a short cutscene

Turn on subtitles and everything becomes much clearer.  I believe all whispers are from the dead.

Not voices of those dead before ME3, jsut those dead before the dream. I hear Mordin, Thane, Ashley, and Legion at some point in the dreams. I hear Ashley recite her lines from ME1 when she stays behind. I hear Legion calling me Shepard Commander and other things, etc...

But there are other whispers I've not been able to make out on my crappy speakers and I haven't tried playing with my not crappy headset.

Carefull about confirmation bias guys, the brain can make you hear things that arent there by the power of sugestion. Clear your mind of all bias before listening to this...

I have actually noticed in the final dream sequence, the wisps actually all move towards the child (after he's done running away from you a million times) and surround him.

I think I can hear it, but it's hard to make out among the other voices. It may not even say it, just something that sounds similar, but forms those words because I'm listening specifically for them.

There are the whispers of the dead squadies, but there are more whispers then that. I should have looked in to them more, I will definitely on my next play through.

Sorry im not hearing anything specific asside from the normal dead characters. IU did notice the annoying bzzzzzzzzz going in the backgroud wich is a sign of indocrination according to the codex

The sound quality on that one wasn't great. When I heard it I was standing in the middle of a group of them and it was loud.

I only have the final dream saved. I went back and checked it out. Basically alot of your squadmates call out to you including the dead ones. I heard legion, Anderson, liara and edi call out to me. If you dont move the scene continues anyway. You can try to turn around and run but it will always reset you back to the starting area. If you stand in one spot the dream lingers until all of the voices call out your name and then cuts to the scene with you and the boy embracing in fire

The very first dream doesnt have any of the oily shadows, does it?

Also, I doubt it actually means anything, but in the first dream, when you find the kid, he has the toy ship in his hands, but he doesnt have the toy ship in any of the later dreams.
