I see this number thrown about a lot, but I haven't been able to actually find a source that stated that there would be 16 different endings in ME3. Can someone provide me a source to that claim?

On a related note, how many endings do you consider ME2 to have?

I'd say Mass Effect 2 had three endings.

it does have 16 endings if you count very slight variances to them, cant really say more here as its non spoiler area

Best I could find was an IGN wiki/guide. Which... doesn't really constitute a "BioWare promise." So I'd like to know too.

Also yeah, 3 endings for ME2.

Shepard lives, keep base.
Shepard lives, destroy base.
Shepard dies. You can keep/destroy, sure, but since it isn't imported it seems more like an alternative game over than another two options.

I have never read any official article mentioning 16 endings, however after ME3 was announced some guy started a rumor saying there would be a distinct ending for every squad mate, i am assuming thats what people are going by.

I thought the number itself came from the official guide which was then posted to IGN's wiki. Does anyone have the guide?

We've got one ending with 3 variations and a number of tweaks to a the variations.

ME2 doesn't have much, it's pretty much Shep lives/dies, saves base/doesn't, and then who on the team lives/dies. Though that said, it still feels like more than ME3.

IGN used to have 16 different ending variations on there.  They only cut it down recently, probably due to everyone pointing it out.

Casey Hudson stated that there would be 16 different possible endings which has been quoted and re-quoted numerous times. There are if you count the slight variations in them. However most do not count slight variations and as a result only view it as having three endings. Most latched onto the "different" part as being the operative word so they feel they have been lied to. As far as the ending of ME2 there was only one thing that mattered, which was to destroy the Collectors so if you view it that way there was only one end to ME 2. Whether you and your team survived and whether or not you spared the collector base is periphery details as to the level of how successful you are which in the end was what people latched onto. When I went into ME 3 only one thing mattered to me and that was to destroy the Reapers. Since most people had to make a choice that made no sense to them to destroy the Reapers they feel cheated.

That's like saying Mass Effect 2 had a dozen diffrent endings for every squadmate that can potentially die.

That's rather hard to quantify, depending on what each individual does or does not constitute as a seperate ending.

Personally, I'd say two moderately different endings, depending on whether or not Shepard + varying numbers of the team survive, or everyone snuffs it along the way. Whether or not the collector base is destroyed or not I don't count because - as with ME3 - it just results in a different coloured explosion and inferred consequences.

I'm trying to find an actual interview with Casey where he explicitly says there are 16 different endings... and I'm coming up empty. I believe the number stems from the IGN guide, to be honest.

What Casey DID lie about was regarding how the endings were not the same and would not simply be a choice of A,B, and C.

A press release? Must be a record of it somewhere. You might have better luck in the ME3 forums. They're alot more responsive and alot of them tend to have most important info favorited.
