I understand the writer. Sometimes we see a controversy and are tempted to think we can have and voice an opinion on it even if we don't go into the specifics, because there seems to be some "principle" at stake. Most of these times, we're WRONG and end up looking like total douchebags to the people involved who actually know what they're talking about. At some point in life you should learn that absolutes in life are very very few and every situation is different and should be analyzed before being judged.

But, one would expect journalists, people who report for a living, to learn their lesson eventually, and not report on stuff they have not researched properly?

Oh, totally. It's clear she was just too snob about "gamers" to consider any research necessary, we're all just 13yo kids who drink soda while we play all day, after all, aren't we?

It's funny none of these people spewing the " Artistic Integrity" crap did not even consider games art, that is until the controversy over the ME3 endings started. I have always thought "some" video games as art, mainly RPG type games....The thing that the Artistic Integrity people seem to forget, with out player input in constructing the story, its an incomplete work. Especially in games where your choices effect the story ie. the Mass Effect series.

Why are you trying to speak for everyone?

He's not speaking for everyone. Only 95% of us.

People, people, let's not forget Heavy Rain. If video games are an art form, surely that is our pinnacle.

And would you dare ask them change it because you didn't like how a certain part played out?  I've thought about Heavy Rain a lot lately during this whole debate.  People accepted the game for the artistic achievement it was, even though many found it bleak and depressing.  There were no cupcake petitions to change the ending of that game.

Seems like it. I wonder how many such articles she can write before she is never allowed to publish anything for any newspaper again?

They don't have a funny and crazy enough fanbase yet. Yet. :)

I know I hate BSN sometimes, but this article is offensive to all gamers and BioWare. There are so many contradictions and backhanded (and unknowledgeable and intolerant) remarks toward gamers and the game industry in the article I don't even want to waste my time analyzing why it is an example of terrible and stupid journalism.

I know. It's everyone that enjoys games at all. It's laughably absurd, what she writes.

It's similar to me when I say "Not everyone that likes football is an idiot, but all idiots likes football".
Oh, wait, that's actually true isn't it?

Here is the article.

Thanks, New Yorker.  Now I know just what is wrong with the whole situation:

BioWare cut off my supply of Mountain Dew Game Fuel, and then I became so enraged that I did my best Annie Wilkes impression and forced Ray Muzyka to cave in to my demands to revise the ending.  But even though the ending was at worst lazy storytelling and at best ham-fisted by BioWare, and the author sympathizes with my disgruntled feelings and my rights to be disgruntled, if studios like BioWare keep handing me staggering victories like this, art will never have a chance.  After all, a mature audience for an art form would never seriously suggest changing the ending to a book, movie, or tv show, nor would BioWare ever respond to its audience's feedback and make changes to its games, allowing a poisonous strain of thought to run rampant in its games.

Read it, because that's really what it says.

ART ART ART ART ART ART ART ART ART ART ART ART ART ART ART ART ART ART ART ART ART ART ART ART ART ART ART ART ART ART ART ART ART ART ART ART ART ART ART ART ART ART ART ART ART ART ART ART ART ART ART ART ART ART ART ART ART ART ART ART ART ART ART ART

Getting a TAD tired of this silly defense. It being art (which is debatable) doesn't excuse a lot of broken promises and false marketing.

It's just as tedious as hearing people demand a new ending.  This whole situation is depressing and revealing about the gaming community and also how people view us.  And the fact that right now, the gaming community is GIVING them ammunition.  The whole thing is embarrassing.

A lot of people are angry about the ending and it's to be expected. However, I think it's what's there. It's disappointing, I see what they tried to do with it, but it comes across as hashed. The article is a bit insulting to gamers in general; it comes across as tabloid journalism. Maybe the article itself is a reference to ME3. Ghost written by Khalisah al-Jilani.
Either way, I'm not going to go off my rocker about it.

I sense an air of elitism, ignorance and stereotyping all rolled into one article. Its pretty obvious from his tone that he sees gamers as geeky basement dwelling bespectacled nerds who only fantasies about anime girls.

To put it mildly.
I'd rather put it like this: "Falsely claimed elitism, bethrothed with condescending ignorance, thy stench is most foul."

-> BioWare promised "vastly different endings reflecting all your choices throughout the trilogy".
-> BioWare delivered 3 almost identical endings that are not affected by your decisions, and even render them partly irrelevant
-> Gamers want what they were promised

I do not see how it paints us in a bad light, or how it is embarassing for anyone but BioWare.

Oh, for the love of...

"A mature audience for an art form would never do this"

Yes, no matter how much you hate something, never complain or give your honest opinion, because it's ART. You can't criticize art, because that's not grown-up. How dare you.

Yes. A dishonest "lol that was good" is infinitely better than a honest "what the f*ck".

It's just like you NEVER say "yes" if a girl asks you "do these trousers make me look fat?" even though everyone wh sees her knows the answer is "hell yes".

Indeed.  I work hard everyday to pay my rent for my modest house and at the end of a long, hard day I like to play games in my underwear before jacking off to hentai like anyone else.  I do not deserve to be stereotyped in this fashion.

I ALWAYS say the look fat, even when they don't. More fun that way.

Why not tell her that she looks like a big tasty muffin instead? Try not to be so negative.

No, no, no. That wouldn't guilt her into exercising enough. Then the relationship goes to hell in a handbasket because you cheated on her. Can't have that. Tsk, tsk.
