So I've been curious as to how ME3 was received in Japan, not just the ending but the game itself.

I was able to find Launch sales numbers: http://www.vgchartz....ly/40986/Japan/

The site updates a week behind, but you can clearly see that ME3 was not a top seller. It placed 19th overall for the PS3, and Xbox vesion made 22nd.
All this really tells me is that Western games still, for the most part, aren't very popular over there. Nor are games made on the Xbox (which is the original platform for ME).

To me this means that Japan, and countries in Asia, are in the minority. "Waiting for the rest of the world to play and finish" ME was some nonsense if you ask me. North America and the European countries are the majority, so we should have the loudest voice. And I think it's safe to say that we are not satisfied with the ending, we are not happy, and we are the majority. (Of the people who played and dislike the ending events)

Japan has a different taste in games than the west.

Come to think of it they have a different taste in many different types of things.

Nah, shooters are NOT popular in Japan.

Nor are our RPGs. So basically, they have got all the reasons in the world not to buy it.

Don't read too much in numbers from Japan

Is anyone really surprised? They had a good week of internet rage from the west to warn them to stay away.

Lucky...

As much as I would love to use this as an excuse to bash the ending I can't. Western games rarely, rarely sell well in Japan. It's been addressed by some Japanese developers/publishers as a problem too. Japanese gamers don't like change or something I guess.

It was either Square Enix or Capcom that said that the Japanese game industry was in danger because the Japanese gamers didn't want anything foreign or something. I can't remember.

Besides what has already been mentioned about differing tastes, it is to be added that the japanese video game market is self-sufficient and quite diverse. They do not quite look intently to the release of western games, even those that are really big for us.

Like people have said, Xbox 360 is not popular in Japan, PS3 version of game was poorly optimized, Western RPG's tend not to sell well in Japan, and maybe they heard about the ending but that is a maybe.

Japan is a very interesting market, one in which Kai Leng can possibly enjoy greater popularity than Shepard (not that it is necessarily true).
Think Final Fantasy vs. Gears of War, and you will understand the dichotomy between Japanese and American markets.

This, while not a one size fits all answer, sums up a lot.  You ever seen some of the games they play over there?

Their food is great though.

On a half-serious level, in most Japanese games have several gameplay "systems" with cool, complex names like "Paradigm Shift" or "Just Counter" or "Cross Assault".

How many cool gameplay "systems" does Mass Effect 3 have? None.

Crucible doesn't count.

Did Japan even like ME1 or ME2? As others have said, shooters aren't as popular over there.

ME is just not Japan's cup of tea. I wouldn't read anything more then that into it.

Make Sheppard an angst-y teenager.
Give him huge crazy looking hair.
Make the female characters short, with preteen facial features, and where school girl outfits.
Stylize the graphics a bit.
Have the Normandy transform into a giant battle robot.
Have the combat revolve around robot Normandy.
Give shep a gun with a 3 meter bayonet.

And maybe, just maybe-it will sell.

Edit: Oh yeah, and you can't have the plot and narritive fall into lunacy during the last few minutes, it has to do this throughout the entire game.

Those games are fantastic.
Still, western audiences have arguably never quite understood the populariy Raiden enjoys amongst the Japanese fans.
