Hell, Skyrim got a 40/40 in THE quintissential japanese games publication, a distinction shared by only a dozen or so other games (this magazine has been running since the Famicon was the big cheese) and it still sold poorly in Japan.

Yep.
Keep in mind that for that matter, Other M was an attempt to make the Metroid franchise palatable to a Japanese audience when it had never sold well there (though selling very well in America). That's exactly how we got a whiny, meek and ultimately submissive Samus that didn't so much as think independently without written, express permission from Adam.

The outcry against the ending is not only limited to Europe and North America. I've read some forums in Taiwan, and gamers' responses have largely been negative regards to the ending. Obviously, the dissent isn't as bad as what we have in Europe and North America, but the message is indeed the same: the ending really sucked.
Yeah, I am from Taiwan, and the fans in Taiwan are not exactly happy with the ending, either.
In any case, there just aren't that many people who play Mass Effect in Taiwan.
One of the reasons for this is that the game was never properly localized (translated) in Taiwan, and as surprising as this may sound, not everyone in the world speaks and reads English.
On ther other hand, there are Chinese versions of both Final Fantasy XIII and Final Fantasy XIII-2.
This has been a much bemoaned woe from the Taiwanese ME fans, that this gem of a series fails to reach a wider audience due to language barriers.
It's hard to recommend a game to a friend if the said friend has to constantly look up words in that game's dialogues.
Imagine if Mass Effect only comes in German.

Yeah so I'm so not surprised at this numbers. Western console games sell poorly in Asia.

Nor are Japanese games in the West. The only games from Japan that actually have earned some popularity were specifically made for the Western crowd. You know, games like Resident Evil, Silent Hill etc.
So, no I wouldn´t read too much into it either.

As much as I would love to use this as an excuse to bash the ending I can't. Western games rarely, rarely sell well in Japan. It's been addressed by some Japanese developers/publishers as a problem too. Japanese gamers don't like change or something I guess.
It was either Square Enix or Capcom that said that the Japanese game industry was in danger because the Japanese gamers didn't want anything foreign or something. I can't remember.
I agree with all of this, and I remember the article you mention.

The Persona series, MGS series and Final Fantasy series would like a word with you....

Come to think of it they have a different taste in many different types of things.
This, while not a one size fits all answer, sums up a lot. You ever seen some of the games they play over there?
Hell I play some of the games they have over there. They come up with some whacky stuff. >_>

ME is just not Japan's cup of tea. I wouldn't read anything more then that into it.
Make Sheppard an angst-y teenager.
Give him huge crazy looking hair.
Make the female characters short, with preteen facial features, and where school girl outfits.
Stylize the graphics a bit.
Have the Normandy transform into a giant battle robot.
Have the combat revolve around robot Normandy.
Give shep a gun with a 3 meter bayonet.
And maybe, just maybe-it will sell.
Edit: Oh yeah, and you can't have the plot and narritive fall into lunacy during the last few minutes, it has to do this throughout the entire game.

I think Japan would have loved the ending.

It is a MUST READ
to quote:
A Gainax Ending is an ending that doesn't make any sense.
This is usually a deliberate form of Mind Screw or intended as a Sequel Hook to a sequel that was never made.
For whatever reason, after watching a Gainax Ending, you won't have any idea what happened.
After rewatching it, rewatching the entire series, discussing it with other fans, looking up the meaning of the symbolism, and subjecting the entire thing to a comprehensive literary analysis, you still might not have any idea what happened.
If you're lucky, then there will be some kind of emotional or symbolic resolution even if it doesn't actually explain what happened to the characters, and you'll be left with the sense that the series as a whole was more deeply thought out than it seemed before.
If you're unlucky, then you'll be left with more questions than when you started with, and the sense that the series as a whole has been voided of the meaning you once read in it.
A Gainax Ending frequently involves bizarre and nonsensical Genre Shifts, Fauxlosophic Narration, and/or Faux Symbolism, and may very well cause Ending Aversion. For an aborted Sequel Hook, you might encounter a Diabolus Ex Vacuus (where a new villain appears from nowhere, does something villainous, and then disappears again) or No Ending in the form of an ambiguous Cliff Hanger. Either way, it would have been addressed in the sequel... had there been one.

Kai Leng is of Chinese, not Japanese descent. It's like saying a French character would instantly find success among British players. Yeah...avatar0 wrote...
Japan is a very interesting market, one in which Kai Leng can possibly enjoy greater popularity than Shepard (not that it is necessarily true).
