That thing is ok but its not to live and die by for sales totals. Also if memory serves it does not account for Digital Distribution.

The previous ME games didn't do well in Japan either. Frankly, Western games in general don't do well there. They get cult followings at best, similar to what some Japanese games get among Western gamers (Earthbound, for example). We shouldn't try and use these statistics to support our views, because Japan wouldn't have taken a liking to this game anyway.

As for whether they would've liked the ending better, I doubt it. The original Evangelion ending was about as loathed among fans as ME3's ending is around here.

Yea, The Evangelion original ending was not well recieved in Japan...... The creator got so many death threats, he changed the ending with a movie. To be fair from what i saw of it, it was just that bad.

If you are a Final Fantasy Fan, XIII-2 is a great game. I have yet to finish it but that demonstrates a company that listens to their fanbase. They made the game more open ended with an element of time travel. It is a massive improvement over Final Fantasy XIII, which did have a decent story but was very linear. I'm hoping that Bioware does the same and takes their fan feedback into account.

Square Enix is taking the DLC route as well.  For the first time ever, they are making DLC part of a Final Fantasy game.  I hate to say it, but the DLC madness is something that is spreading across the whole of the game industry.  At least the corporate game industry.

This, while not a one size fits all answer, sums up a lot.  You ever seen some of the games they play over there?

Big fan of Nintendo, their games are great.  Square Enix's older games (Chrono Trigger, FF2, FF3, etc) were also great.  I'm sure I can think up plenty more great examples if I had time.

I don't believe the sweeping generalizations in this thread are very accurate.  Yeah, Japan and America do have different tastes, and I do believe that we like ME more than they do, but some of the stuff in this thread is really over the top.

Hell ya they do. This was the 7th best selling game 2 weeks ago in Japan -If I Were in a Sealed Room With a Girl, I'd Probably XXX (D3 Publisher) {2012.03.15} (¥6.090) - 18.291 / NEW

No lie

Here is how ME3 did for the same week -[b]Mass Effect 3 (Electronic Arts) {2012.03.15} (¥7.665) - 8.142 / NEW

Oh please, we all know that for BioWare the community encompasses only those out of the United States. When did BioWare ever care for Europeans? Exactly... not once.

I remember when Portal 2 was released in Japan, it was also a commercial bomb. But guess what game was the top selling in the week it was released? A PSP game that involves stripping girls to see if they're vampires or not. <_< That was the moment I completely lost all remaining respect for Japanese gamers.

Well obviously Xbox is less popular than PS3 in Japan and more popular than PS3 in America. Xbox is made by Microsoft(AMERICA) PS3 is made by Sony(JAPAN)

Eh?

I thought XIII-2 was utter crap and worse than the first. Sure, it fixed one problem raised: linear "corridor" gameplay but the character roster is smaller, the characters are even weaker (didn't think that was possible), and story is weaker, the gameplay is more or less the same.

What in the jesus?

Honestly, I don't think FF will ever get back its magic. I just replay IV to X these days.

I agree, Final Fantasy 13-2 is a blight on the RPG genre as a whole.

You know, I actually agree with these "over the top" comments though. Two reasons:

- You need to consider, guys: what we get in Europe or the US is only the most "universal" stuff that Japan makes. Some of their more "extreme" stuff doesn't make it out of the country.

- It actually seems they're getting worse when it comes to these stereotypical traits. For easy reference, look at FFVIII (not even one of my favourites) and then compare that to FFXIII in terms of the dialogue, style and visuals. XIII is so over-the-top, cheesy and anime-like compared. It honestly seems like a great deal of Japanese game developers have lost their touch in how to produce globally viable games (FromSoftware excluded!)

In fact, even with FFX which was quite recent, I felt that while Tidus was annoyingly voiced and some of the dialogue could be "Krgh" (Tidus and Yuna: "Ha ha ha ha ha" anyone?), generally it was quite mature and well done. The world was colourful but I don't recall any overtly Japanese stereotypical elements in it...in fact they created an entirely new religion and culture for the in-game world that, visually, was like a cross-over of Buddhism and Catholicism.

XII was also a weird contradiction in of itself: some of the dialogue was VERY mature and deep, either on philosophical and political levels: none of this anime-esque bullcrap but proper characters. But then...you had Penelo. And then...you had Vaan. And then...you had Fran's character design (playboy bunny? Seriously?)

In fact, XII tells the whole tale: originally Penelo and Vaan weren't meant to be in it but directors insisted more child-like characters were added to allow the title 'synergy' with a younger audience.

And it's been going downhill ever since....
