Very inconsistent difficulty

Like the blood mages in Denerim at the abandoned house. Quite a few times I had to resort to cheap tactics and let Morrigan take a blood mage out from a corner.
The final boss at the abandoned house rips my group in shreds in matter of seconds, no amount of potion spamming can save me. Just have to put difficulty on easy again.
Other parts of the game are quite easy, no need to manage my group spells manually, my squad can tear down a whole group of enemies with just right clicking on them.
I've read that mages are overpowered in this game and I agree that Morrigan is a beast but the enemy mages are even more frightening.

And those Denerim blood mages are also pretty notorious. It's not just you - a lot of people have commented that the fight seems really, really hard, compared to other encounters.

OP probably means the Last Request quest. That is one of the trickiest quests in the game.

That's the one I mean. If I put my difficulty setting down to easy, the boss fight was quite easy but almost impossible on normal.

Personally, I do that quest later in the game (around level 20) when I have a wider array of abilities.

Having a stealth-capable rogue helps as you can scout ahead and disarm traps. Mana clash helps against mages.

Actually I have a problem with my rogue. I'm about at lvl 10 and I have 24 cunning and level 2 in lockpicking and so far I have been unable to detect a single trap in the game and when I do see a trap, I have no option to disarm it.
Do I need a level in trap making to disable them?

IIRC, you should be able to disarm a trap by right-clicking on it once you've detected it (on a PC, no idea on console). I do think DA:O's difficulty is kind of spiky though.

(There *are* a few traps in the game that I've never been able to disarm; I think they're buggy.)

Definitely no trap-making needed. I've played lots of rogues without that skill. If you've got the Deft Hands talent at a high enough level, you should be fine.

I've seen multiple times now when the trap gets rearmed automatically, so if one of my characters runs over it, the trap activates.
Yet I am unable to click on the trap to disarm it.

True though that difficulty levels vary oddly throughout the game. The Urn quest was full of that- cinch battles with the cultists, but then unexpectedly heavy battles with the drakes.

True, unlike the OP I'm not against this. I like the way Baldurs Gate encounters are all over the place, not scaling conveniently every time, so that you have to worry before every encounter since you're not certain just how difficult the battle will be... and then you end up being more cautious with each new step too, lest you trigger one of those overwhelming encounters. Then again I prefer challenge...tetrisblock4x1 wrote...
Yeah, inconsistent difficulty... that should be expected as a part of the open world experience.

There are TONS of abilities that just stop people dead in their tracks.
I didn't find this part of the game "easy" but because of the party I had, it was easier than it could have been. My player character was a Healer/Controller mage. So, I threw down a Glyph of Repulsion and then tossed a Glyph of Paralysis on top of it. If you didn't know, that causes mass paralysis.
As long as you find some way to turn a bad guy off for a while, your party can bash them or their support to death and make short work of the encounter.
When I fought Logain near the end of the game, I choose my Healer/Controller mage and henever landed a hit on me. I used Glyph of paralysis, then when that wore off I used Glyph of Repulsion and watched him bounce backwards every tme he tried to get close to me. When that wore off I used Misdirection Hex, so every hit became a critcal miss. Knowing the cool downs of each of my spells helps. I used the nes with the long cool down times first so they were ready to use again later. In between casting those spells, I just plinked away at him with my basic attack.
Dealing with the fianl boss in Last Request was pretty much the same. I just turned him off and beat his face in.
As I said, this game is really swingy. When the AI turns off my my healer/controller mage, or turns off alistair and the bad guys agro my mage to death, encounters end quickly.
NOTE: For those who don't get the Icy manipulator reference, it's from Magic the Gathering card game. magiccards.info/10e/en/326.html
