Until I saw this, I didn't remember that that 'saving the universe' is what I jokingly referred to playing Mass Effect as to my wife (before I reached the end of Mass Effect 3.) That's what is so disappointing about the ending for me; not only can I not save Shepard, I can't save most of his squad, nor the billions (trillions?) of other people of other species stranded near Earth along with the many destroyed in the ridiculous multi-colored relay explosions. So, basically, the Mass Effect trilogy strung us all along thinking Shepard was the one who could save everyone in a marvelous fictional Mass Effect universe, overcoming all odds, but in the end, ... the END... , billions to trillions will die, the evil AI demons were right and we were wrong, Shepard dies, and everyone left living is basically f****d.... worse than any tragedy that has ever befallen real life Earth. Way to end a wonderful, uplifting story, Bioware.
