In ME2, it's a nice little ball thingy.
In ME3, it's just a side-mission item. I don't even think it's in your cabin.

Prothean Spheres were used for data storage. In ME1, Shepard found one on Eletania (sp?) which showed him a cave man the Protheans were observing. Who knows how it wound up on Eletania? In ME2 during the mission to recover the M44 Firewalker, a second is found. When Shepard touched it, it bulk transmitted it's data. Shepard seemed to be unique in the ability to activate these things. The third was found on Gei Henna (sp?) thanks to a refugee. There is no info on any transmission from that one.

Would've been funny to me if it had turned out to be the Catalyst.

If it turns out to be the Catalyst would be hilarious and that would be a good one instead of a citadel

I was really disappointed that it wasn't back in my cabin and turned out to be totally useless.

yah, why bother putting it in the game and then don't even bother using ever when they asked us to collect it the whole entire 3 games for mysteries to be resolved. -"-

Does triggering the Prothean vision with Shai'ira's trinket do anything in ME3? I know that was something that transferred over in your save file.

I always thought we were going to get some big reveal if we had collected all of the spheres throughout the games. It wouldn't be imperative to defeating the Reapers, as the spheres were always little prizes for participating in side missions. The sphere in ME1 is especially easy to miss. But I thought that by collecting the spheres, all of the Prothean messages and visions would line-up into something really neat. Of course, with ME3 having an actual Prothean as a squadmate we get a first person perspective into Prothean life and culture. There's not much the spheres could have told us.

That's not true. Javik didn't know anything about the prothian empire before the Reaper war. The spheres could have told us about a time before that. As javik said he was born after the war had started.
