So I just encountered Mordin for the first time in the game and I have to say I've highly dismayed. I'd seen his scenes in the demo of course and I could tell it wasn't Michael Beattie. I'd heard he wasn't returning and I wasn't happy about that. Recasting usuually bugs the crap out of me, but this time I actually wasn't feeling to bad because I thought whoever played him in the demo (sounded like Mark Meer) did a passable job and it didn't sound like it would bother me because it was similar enough to maintain the illusion. But when I first reached that part in the full game, I was putt off by whoever it was that replaced the replecment. He sounds nothing like the origional Mordin, and even seemed to have a weaker command of Mordin's mannersism. I can't really pretend it's him anymore. Even the same lines I heard from before from E-3 seem to have a blatantly inferior delivery in terms of capturing the character of Mordin.
What's the deal here? Why would Bioware do that? Does anyone else feel the same way?
Why would you do that to Mordin's voice?

To be honest, I didn't have a problem with Mordin's recast. I actually forgot he'd been recast after meeting him on Sur-Kesh.

The word on the street is that Beattie's agent simply wanted too much money.

I was bothered by his voice when talking to him on the Salarian homeworld. Fortunately he didn't talk much after that.
However, during the genophage mission I wasn't bothered as much. Definitely not a Beattie-quality performance.

I honestly couldn't even tell the difference. But I didn't even know there was a change in voice actor, so...

I didn't even know he was recast. *shrug*

He sounded a tad less extatic and hyper, but story-wise, that doesn't seem that much of a problem. Other than that, the recast was more than solid work.
As on why's and how's, here's an open letter from mr. Beattie regarding the matter:

The VA didn't sign a contract, he could have asked for millions for all we know. Don't blame bioware, Voice Acting is a business.
I personally think he did a fantastic job, the only fault was that he didn't have that "inhale tic" where he inhales at random points.

This.
To be honest, I didn't even know he'd been recast until reading this thread.

He's similar enough that it's okay IMO.

I fell in love with the character, not the voice actor. William Salyers does a good job to be perfectly honest, and the scenes with Mordin in the game were among my absolute favorites (also the most emotional ones).

The new VA was flat and emotionless. And the voice was off.

This again?
I was fine with the voice, though it sounds differently, but again it's fine.

If the new VA was weaker I don't think the ***** scene would have been as well received.

The new VA did a great job imo. I noticed it wasn't the original voice, but it was close enough that I didn't care after a while.

I guess if you really didn't interact with Mordin a whole lot or have him in your party for the majority of ME2 you probably couldn't tell the difference. But for me it was like night and day still his replacement did an admirable job.
