Fixed in the 1.01 patch.
Imported characters are messed up.

It can work.
You just have to select your character, then on the screen where you chose your race, origin etc, take a step back and return to the character selection screen, select the same character again and it should work fine.
It was an odd glitch mind. It made my dudes eyes hyowge and his nose go micheal jackson.
But again, it does work, my only gripe is that if you alter your 'character creator' made character in DA:Origins (the main game) is that it returns to a preset. Ahh well. Game's fantastic though.
