Why do so many IRL males play a female Shepard?

Plus the male voice acting is even more jarring for me since I play as black shep.

My canon femshep is actually based on my wife. She is a paragon, and I try to respond to situations in the way that she would In fact, she was watching me play the end, and when it came to it I asked her what choice to make.

Do you know why love scenes don't matter? Because YOU are not making love to someone. They are the characters of the game. So tell me really, what is the difference of maleShep/Ashley love scene and femShep/Kaiden love scene? In both cases you have a guy and a girl getting it on. The only difference is femShep/Liara because you get two girls. If you think YOU are Shepard, then it may be strange. But if you don't, then there is nothing weird about it.Kobrakai7 wrote...

Sigh, this tired argument is a pretty stupid one to make seeing you can have steamy love scenes with male characters. Its nothing to do with homophobia anyway, it just doesn't feel right is all.

Agree. In ME3 especially I think Meer's performance is slightly better than Hale's. She is really a bit overacting at times.Kobrakai7 wrote...
I find no problem with the quality of male Shepards voice acting anyway, pretty much all voice acting in the entire series is phenomenal.

First of all, Jennifer Hale is a terrific actress, easily edging out Mark Meer with her more subtle tone and larger range of emotional inflections.
Second, the renegade femshep is an excellent character in herself, easily outclassing male contemporaries in what is typically a male-dominated genre. She neither loses her femininity, nor does her womanhood impact on the way she is viewed or treated in any way. In many respects, a renegade femshep is far more badass than a maleshep.
Third - and arguably most importantly - Garrus needs love too, yo.

You are assuming direct control of an avatar though, it isn't like a movie where you are just watching scenes unfold from afar, thus the feeling of personal involvement is greater.
And i assume why no one asks the opposite question is that the number of male gamers still far dwarfs the female population...<3

2. No other way to do it with Garrus and Kaidan (is it true what they tell me? you can dude/dude Kaidan in ME3?), because they're the only glomp-worthy of the LI-able dudes, IMO. My mind is still out on Steve, but that's not FemShep-related at all =)
3. Variety for replays. I cannot stress this enough. I have six Sheps that have finished ME1 that I wouldn't mind importing into ME2 (8 actual completions), and five of them have finished ME2 (plus one ME2-started to see what the no-import story is like), and only one of those has survived ME3 thus far. You can't achieve that without fighting for variety =)

ive never played as a femshep. it is weird that all these dudes enjoy being a femshep lol IMO femshep is cheesy as hell
Also it seems like the nerdiest/most hardcore male players do this. What gives?

Uh, "assuming direct control of" and "identifying with" are different, imo.
I have honestly never taken an RPG to such a length as identifying as the character because so many of them are awful (though maybe that's just the RPGs I've played). I've taken control of them and guided them through a game, but I don't think "Yes, I am _____ and we are the one and the same now."
Some people might, I'm sure, but it isn't fair to generalize to everyone when you have your idea of what "role-playing" femshep means against what I think it means.

I just can't play as femshep, dunno why. But I used to just because I like playing as female characters from time to time, and Jennifer Hale of course.

Now we have a choice in a (ready for this) ROLE PLAYING GAME. Some choose to ROLE play as male, others ROLE play as female. I've played both in many games, because I don't think of the toon/avatar/character on screen as ME at all - I control it and make decisions, but to me it is NOT me.
Hell, I even used to play an older shooter as a female simply because I found out that the sexual-identity-challenged players hesitated before blasting my toon's pretty face. PWNED!
