Why not? You have a problem with it?

Actually I do both. More male shepards though. Femsheps are just for mixing the experience a bit.

Why the hell does it matter? I'm a guy, my Shepard I identify with is Femshep. Who cares?

Never got into it. Shep is male in my mind and has the default face. So it shall be.

Reading the story discussion on these forums has surprised me just how many guys refer to their Shepard as "she". In a game all about immersing yourself as the main character it just seems awkward to me to play as the opposite sex, especially given all the romance plots, etc.

I have played the whole series through multiple times but have never made a single female Shepard... am I missing any major plot elements or great scenes? Anyone else feel the same way?

1. Jennifer Hale's voice acting is FAR better.
2. I'm going to be staring at an ass for 30+ hours, it might as well be a nice looking one.
3. I support any company that doesn't go generi-bald-man with their action heroes.

Some like checking out that fine booty. Some are hipsters who think male Shep is too mainstream. Some like Jennifer Hale. There are plenty of reasons to be honest.

I think your last point is the most valid one as far as mass effect is concerned at least.

I am a male, and only played through as ManShep. If the ending is sorted I am going to play through from ME1 again as FemShep, just to experience it differently.
I played through Fallout New Vegas twice with a different gender, and games like Portal, Tomb Raider and Metroid Prime only give you a female option.
I think for many it is not as issue.

I play both. (Male is Paragon, FemShep is a funny renegade)

In DA:O, I played a dwarf and an elf even though IRL, I'm human.

In other games I've played ninjas, mages, and robots.

Meh. FemShep vs Male Shep is one of the least exotic choices I've made in games.

Because I like Jennifer Hale's voice acting more. That is all.

You play Mass Effect to stare at Shepard's ass the whole time? Strange...

I tried playing as Femshep once but couldn't go through with it. Didn't feel like me. Being a guy, I try to emulate  and envision myself and put myself in Shepard's shoes. I just couldn't do it playing as a woman.

I generally play women for the shallow reason that I prefer to watch a woman bobbing around on the screen rather than a bloke and it's a bit easier on the eye than Marcus Fenix's butt. Yes I know its a shallow reason but most games gender has little to no impact.Though then having played through with a generic looking male Shepard. The FemShep choice was clearly the better one as Jennifer Hale's acting I felt was a lot better than Mark Meer's.

As as side note I was a little disappointed that the scar selection for FemShep in the first game was a series of tastefully arranged lines where as the male selection was "which half of your face do you want to fall off?". Am I the only one who wanted their FemShep in the first to have some terrible scaring, as it kind of felt appropriate after I chose the Torfan background. Especially after I spent a bit of time crafting her to look like an interpretation of a career soldier.

It's ok to explore your feminine side femShep players. Nobody here will judge you.

I am a woman but I prefer maleshep.
One of the reasons is that I do not like Jennifer Hale's voice acting.

Considering the FOV of this game, I think we can exclude that they want to look at butts... it's more like.. watching the shoulders of a woman is more interesting than watching the shoulders of a man.. I guess...

The whole "I don't wanna stare at a mans ass for 30 hours lul" point makes no sense. I'd go even as far as to say that it's a bit homophobic. A majority of my playthroughs have been the male shep and I don't constantly stare at his ass. The same goes for my femshep character.

Why? Because I'm not interested in Staring at my character's ass. I'm interested in everything else that's happening within the game.

I play Femshep when I want to play a renegade. As good as Jennifer Hale's voice acting is, she just comes off as a ruthless **** sometimes, even with Paragon options. Plus, it's kind of hard for me to play renegade on a male character, considering I played through so many times as a paragon male.

Hey, shoulders are my favorite part of the female anatomy, right next to collarbones and jaws. Those smooth lines...

I play them both equally, but Liara is the only one I romance on Femshep (I want my blue babies!). In games with a silent protagonist like DA:O I prefer female. Everyone's reasons are different, but it all boils down to "its a game, I can do what I want".

Agreed. After the first 10 minutes of any game I only focus on the surroundings, not my character. The only thing I care about on main characters is the face. If that looks bad the whole game is awkward

My fiance never plays with femShep. I play with both. I just asked him would he play with her and he was all like "...umm, naw." I asked him why and he said "I ain't no girl. I'm a dude and Shepard is suppose to me."

I always find this "character supposed to be me" thing really, really odd. Because I actually agree with the general premise but not the gender-based conclusion.

For example: I can never play the "evil" side in games because it makes me uncomfortable. Renegade Shepard in ME, Sith in KotoR, it never feels right because thats not "me"; its not how I'm like and I like to project myself onto my characters. However that never precludes me from playing a female character as a male. I can fully empathise and identify with my Shepard even though she's a different gender to me.

I dunno, I guess I'm just not a "manly man". I can get emotionally invested just as easily for either.
