My fiance never plays with femShep. I play with both. I just asked him would he play with her and he was all like "...umm, naw." I asked him why and he said "I ain't no girl. I'm a dude and Shepard is suppose to me."

I always find this "character supposed to be me" thing really, really odd. Because I actually agree with the general premise but not the gender-based conclusion.

For example: I can never play the "evil" side in games because it makes me uncomfortable. Renegade Shepard in ME, Sith in KotoR, it never feels right because thats not "me"; its not how I'm like and I like to project myself onto my characters. However that never precludes me from playing a female character as a male. I can fully empathise and identify with my Shepard even though she's a different gender to me.

I dunno, I guess I'm just not a "manly man". I can get emotionally invested just as easily for either.

I think what he means is "I like to impersonate myself into my character, and impersonating myself into a girl is totally gay".

At least that is how a couple of friends of mine sees it (And reason why many do not even touch Tomb Raider).

I played me1 1st playthrough with male shep ,second with fem shep and I liked it more, much better acting (GJ Hale) and I like more looking my hot chick rather than playing the stereotype male Rambo plus I get the girl to girl action. Many people see this as something is wrong in psychological terms with the player that picks oposiye sex hero which is narrow minded logic, they are just polygons.on top of that I am playing MMORPG since 2001 majority of the female in-game character were controlled by a real life males is this weird?playing tomb raider where u control Lara Croft makes youfeel that its something wrong with you? I think it all comes down to the fun factor and not psychology, afterall you are not shepherd in ME you just control his/her actions.Definately I would go withmae shep on guy to guy action thing though.

1. Jennifer Hale's voice acting is FAR better.

This is the reason why my husband plays Femshep. He started out with Maleshep in ME1 but when he saw me playing as Femshep he said, "Wow, Hale's voice acting is far, far superior" and he re-rolled Femshep.

I know some people like Meer better but in our house Shepard is a woman simply because we both think Hale is amazing.

Everyone is different. Being a man, I just can't project myself onto female Shepard. Whether people admit or not, gender of Shepard is a huge distinction in appearance. I just can't relate to female Shepard. I envision myself running around the Citadel, talking to characters, etc. Just can't do it when I see a woman doing those things.

I guess I can understand that. Seems a bit weird though I mean...I know its a cliche but everyone has a "feminine" side to them (though thats a very poor term to use). I can't see why people find it such a big issue, other than "social pressure" of course.

Personally I'm perfectly happy to invest aspects of my own personality and get emotionally attached to a female character without being scared of somehow "turning gay" as a result. Its not like a mind-control beam zaps you into being gay for playing a female character.

Sorry if anyone takes offence. I just find it genuinely a bit odd that this makes people uncomfortable.

Because I masturbate to my girl Shepard.

And so does everyone in this thread, whether they admit it or not.

On a side note I sometimes prefer to play as a female character when given the chance. The reason being I rather being at a female's assets for 40 hours than a male's.

In no order:

1) Male heroes are a dime a dozen. It's refreshing to have a woman as the hero.

2) Completism. Seeing all the options availiable to the character.

3) Jennifer Hale is not Mark Meer. She can actually voice act.

4) Mark Meer sounds like he's bored to tears and talking in his sleep. I actually find playing as maleshep somewhat torturous because of that alone.

5) Given a choice I'd rather look at a woman for 30 hours a pop. I just would.

How many of these exact same threads are there going to be before you guys process that?

PS-- Not to mention the priceless value of the shock and shame that's no doubt in a Cerberus troopers eyes when he gets a glimpse of the armor and realizes that a female Vanguard has charged him fearlessly and is about to pull the trigger of her shotty into his brain case.

"Hey, " he thinks in his last breath before the click of the trigger, "at least she's got a good bod."

So I play as female as a small mercy to him.

I myself just wanted to try playing through the game from another perspective. There's really not much more to it then that. I'd seen clips of Jennifer Hales voice acting and I was impressed enough to want to experience a full run through using her voice. Plus it is kind of nice to play something other then a typical white male.

As a male-shep player, I gotta say that when I watch femshep videos on Youtube, I find her voice acting boring and half arsed. I guess it's about what you're used to or even personal preference, but it's a bit surprising seeing some people that say they prefer the female voice acting. And I actually like Mark Meer's VA, it doesn't make me feel like he is the less bad option.

The other main reasons people are saying seem more believable (finding more appeal on the values of a leading female, prefering to play a sexually attractive avatar, lesbianizing Liara/Traynor etc).

I think this is a discrepancy that a lot of people misunderstand.

Okay, let's say you're writing a story. If you're a guy, do you only write about guy characters? No. That would be stupid. The storywriting process involves creating, exploring, and empathising with characters: I know I'm not a woman, but I'm just as much not a badass space hero or a noble marine. I'm an English major in Newfoundland who likes pizza pops. I have almost nothing in common with broShep OR femShep. Getting some degree of personal satisfaction by pretending that Shep is me is just cheap entertainment, and only being able to empathise with a character who is like me is just too easy.

The way I see it, I get to take part in telling femShep's story. I do have some sense of "ownership" over the story, but only insofar as I get to take a little bit of responsibility in the authoring process (by way of character choice): it isn't "my" story insofar as "I'm Shepard!" it's "my" story insofar as I chose X and Y and Z for Shep.

If you do another play through of a game that lets you change your character, why not go as a female to see how things change? For example in Fallout New Vegas there are parts you can get through in a totally unique way than using a male character. If you want to experience everything these games have to offer, you can't just keep playing the same character.

I have to agree here. I really can't grasp the fascination with her voice. It seems very monotone much of the time, and almost always sounds like she is angry and being forced to read the lines. I don't know, just not to my tastes.

Mark Meer is good but Jennifer Hale is amazing. I have both but i primary play femshep due to this. Also refreshing having a non-stereotypical protagonist .

Hale's VA work. Meer - more so in ME1 and 2 - is often flat. Probably deliberately, but still.

Because males IRL are not females. That's about it really.

And I don't get all the hate on Meer's performance in ME3. Yeah, Hale was a lot better than Meer in ME1 and ME2, but after playing both Male and Female in ME3, Hale's performance was not very good in my opinion. And Meer's performance was outstanding. Many of Hale's lines were delivered oddly, as if she was trying too hard. Some of her lines also just did not sound right, whereas the mirror lines for Meer were well spoken.

I was disappointed in Hale's performance in ME3 but she is still a fantastic voice actress.

I'v had some friends say to me they prefer playing as a female in games because: "if I gotta look at some characters ass for 30 hours it might as well be a chick".

I prefer playing a male but... *sigh*

Sheploo:

Femshep:

Hale sounds like she's there. In the moment. As she often does. Meer sounds like he's chewing script.
