Why do so many IRL males play a female Shepard?

Oh wow, it's been almost 12 hours since I've read the last thread of this kind.

It's very easy to explain: Males who play females have some kind of sexual disorder, feel like being in the wrong body or are simply gay. A few might also be turned on by hot lesbian games. Since they're also cowards, they make up excuses like "rather watch a female ass" or "I like the voice actor", but of course they're all sick and need a therapy or surgery.

All that aside, it's much easier for me to play and immerse myself with a female Shephard than with dumb generic soldier guy #1456. Male game protagonists are nothing like me, I usually hate them. I like women though... I know, a weird thing. Should call my therapist.

This question has been asked for three decades. I'm sure someone's answered it better in one of those threads than anyone here will. However, I don't try to pretend to be the character(God knows you can't in BW RPGs), it's more like I'm an author trying to write a character. I get immersed in the game in the same manner that I would in a book, just much more powerfully.

This, pretty much.

I have a Male and FemShep.

When i'm playing Mass Effect I don't think of the character as "me", so just as I can watch a film or read a book with a female lead, I can also play a game with a female lead.

I'll usually do 1 play though as one gender, either paragon on renegade, and then as the second gender reversing paragon/renegade choices to see how things turn out.

Oddly it tends to work out male-paragon then female-renegade, a therapist would have a field day with that I expect.....

I am a woman, I prefer to play as male Shepard because I think he's a badass hero and I totally love Mark Meer's voice.

I think Jennifer Hale is an awesome voice actress though. It's all about preference.

I also think they catered to the male audience with all these steamy lesbian romances. If there were more "straight" romances for femshep, I'd be playing more as a femshep.

Question A:

Did I say:

1. Bring over your hairy aunt

2. Bring over your hairy *unt

I would love an exam like that! :D

America.

I know they're hard to find here at an affordable price. America isn't into top-notch healthcare.

Unless you're a one-percenter.

What part of the world do YOU live in?! Of course you can have hearing examinations.. if you feel you were going deaf what would you do lol?

@cerberus1701: Ah yes, insults. I'm not gonna make out that femshep fans are the worst but I only ever get insulted on here for praising Meers work. Never Hales..

No he doesn't need one. I agree with him.

Hale's lines there were appropriate for a female; a little more playful for the situation for messing with Ash. Meer's lines were delivered more appropriately for a male; your not going to hear a guy who looks/sounds like that talking in a playful way. We just don't do that.

Hale doesn't sound any more "in the moment" than Meer there. Both of their jobs on that scene were spot on. Of course, there will always be other scenes in the game where Hale doesn't do a great job, or Meer doesn't do a great job, and so on.

I don't see how you can make the direct analogy to reading a book. In games there's a much more ACTIVE participation as you are physically controlling the character and what they say rather than just passively consuming it from a distance. Hell even the physical proximity to sitting closer to your monitor (on PC) feels more "wired in" than a book or movie ever could.

And the "i'd rather stare at a woman's ass for xx hours" line gets funnier with every 10 hours added to it /facepalm

However that never precludes me from playing a female character as a male. I can fully empathise and identify with my Shepard even though she's a different gender to me..

Everyone is different. Being a man, I just can't project myself onto female Shepard. Whether people admit or not, gender of Shepard is a huge distinction in appearance. I just can't relate to female Shepard. I envision myself running around the Citadel, talking to characters, etc. Just can't do it when I see a woman doing those things.

This is EXACTLY how I feel B)

To me it's all about the differing of stories. With the alignment system in Mass Effect, I wouldn't really call the game role playing. It's an action game, with a better than average story for that genre.

Playing femshep or even a gay Shepard doesn't bother me in any way because I know it's a video game and it's a story.

Do people who are bothered by this, watch TV shows or movies with female leads? Because it's honestly the same thing.

Especially when you find yourself playing through the game a half dozen or more times. If every single time I played the game I was a paragon straight human who romanced Ashley and then Miranda, by the second time the game would be boring.

Switching up the main character gives a breath of fresh air into the game, taking a completely different path with a different romance arc keeps me coming back to BioWare games again and again.

Also, one other possible reason.

My friend, recently finnished a play through of me3 as a Renegade and felt that the male renegade options all came accross as very "bro", he said it felt you were just a second Vega running around.

Renegade femshep, i suspect would be less bro.

I suppose this comes down to whether you play the game role playing what you would do, or are imagining a character and RP'ing what they would do.

I tend to do the latter, and for that reason i usually play with the default shep skin, rather than create my own. (I sometimes give "evil" character a goatee though, obviously.....)

I generally always play a female avatar when given the choice and I'm a guy. I just like badass female characters and find them more interesting than a typical badass male character. Specifically in regards to ME I just find Hale's VA way better than Meer's. I played a male Shep once the first time I played then I played a female. After that I never looked back. I find Hale has more nuance in her delivery.

Although after "STEEEEEEEEEEVVEEEE!", I might have to check out Hale's voice acting.

Eh, different people like different things. Of course there are theories about how guys who enjoy playing girl characters are either gay or want to be girls themselves. To that I say, if you are confused or insecure enough that playing a female character in a video game is suddenly going to make you crave some man lovin, then absolutely you should stick to exclusively playing male characters. Otherwise, have fun. Play whatever the hell you want.

While I don't know how accurate your first sentence is, I agree with the rest of what you said.

I've never played as a female but I might one of these days for the different dialogue.
