I believe having an objectively evil bad guy does serve one important purpose- to contrast with the morally ambiguous antagonists.

For example, Arl Rendon Howe, Logain's chief ally in his coup, was one of the most despicable people the player was likely to run into in Dragon Age Origins. He used torture, murder, and from the personnel experience of the Human Noble, betrayal, purely for the sake of achieving personal power.

This, I think, helped make Logain a more effective villain as it showed just how far he had fallen from the hero that he used to be when he was shown working with someone like Howe.
