Why do so many IRL males play a male Shepard?

Reading the story discussion on these forums has surprised me just how many guys refer to their Shepard as "he". In a game all about choices and exploring different possibilities, practically inviting you to try every option available, it just seems strange to me how many people apparently always play as the same sex, especially given all the romance plots, etc.

Would you argue that those who do so are missing some major plot elements or great scenes? Anyone else feel the same way?

I always choose female in games when I can. Who wants to stare at guy butt for 150 hours?

"He" is the generic term.
Blame misandry.

Besides, maleshep sounds hotter. Quite frankly. :P
And sheploo is based off a model...
also Tali romance.

I love how this is the only argument people like you ever use.

I prefer to put myself into the situation of the main character in most games. So I usually pick male.

Being a male, I identify better with playing as a male character. There is a disconnect for me when playing as a woman, as I can't envision or put myself in her shoes.

No, this game ios not like F2 where a different gender has some different reactions.

I don't miss any thing.
Watching on INTERNET the different gender videos there is nothing I miss.

Female and Male Shepard have different dialogue at various parts of the game.

You even have a wonderful bonding moment with Eve if you're a FemShep.

As a girl, I always play as FemShep. I tried to use MaleShep once but I couldn't play more than 10 minutes, it was almost disgusting. Bad voice acting, tons of testosterone... I can't play +100 hours staring at a gym rat!

Same reasons as Reign and shinobi. I am a male, so I pick male character, put myself in his shoes and mostly choose the options I would choose IRL... so to speak.

However when I try to play something radically different, like all out renegade, I choose femshep. The different gender disconnects me from the character, making "bad choices" easier to do. Its crazy, but it works.

It's actually because they would like to be superheroes themselves.

nothing wrong in that really.

Someone has explained that well, I ddon't remember who it was, but their point was this:

around 90% people who bother with creating characters in game does this for following reasons:
- males play male characters they would be and act like in real life
- females play females characters they would like to look like (to be pretty)
- males play female characters they would like to have as their sex partners.

I fall in the last category. Also, Jenny Hale has much better voice in my opinion.

There are so many things wrong with this statement... I'll just say if that's what you think of female players then I would suggest that you're way off base there..

i just prefer male shep because it makes more sense. I simply don't find it believable a female could be shepard. Sorry if that's sexist but it's my opinion. And also.. i can't stand femshep's voice acting. She is like way over the top with it.. way over dramatic.. and it just makes it corny for me. Also, i actually recognize her voice from about a billion other video games which hurts suspension of disbelief for me. Not sure why they would use someone's voice that is so well known.

The only reason I even played male shep was to see how Miranda changes more as a LI. The male voice actor also has improved a lot, and I now enjoy him.

I wouldn't mind.
There are people who would despise looking at a female backside. I'm not one of them.
