around 90% people who bother with creating characters in game does this for following reasons:
- males play male characters they would be and act like in real life
- females play females characters they would like to look like (to be pretty)
- males play female characters they would like to have as their sex partners.

You forgot one

-Males play female characters to put them into lesbian relationships

(Sorry for the people who disagree, but having oveheard quite a few guy gamers in Ventrilo discussing JUST that as a reason for making female characters in games with relationships... I could also add in the one who commented he likes making female chars so he could... "control them"... erg.. yeah that was a creepy one)

I play as both, but mostly femshep partially because I prefer Jennifer Hale's voice acting over Mark Meer's seems like she puts more emotion into what she says imo. Not saying that Mark Meer is  a bad voice actor this is just my preference.

Also femshep x Liara moments seem more romantic and I find that some of the moments between are actually cute to me anyways in ME3 specifically.

Also the majority of games and movies always have a male protagonist so it's nice to see a woman kick A** . I Always had a soft spot for female protagonists in action games/movies/tv etc. Even though mass effect is actually rpg/shooter, but I think you get what I am saying.

I made a male shepard because I'm a man. Games like this are practically begging for you to put yourself in it and I can't really see the character as being me if I'm a woman. Usually my second playthrough of games like this I make a female character but my main is always a man

I prefer to play Femshep because Male sheppard sounds like a brick when it comes to expressing emotions...

My original playthrough is a female. But I tried male because of different nuances in my 20 something playthroughs

Seems completely normal to me OP

Why do you have a female avatar?  Why do you feel?

I feel nothing and do none of the romances.  Stone cold, baby

Because I'm a guy and I'm inputting myself in the story. When I'm done I go female to see whats different. Also I get to look at that Femshep booty MMMMMM

Because I've no interest in playing a female Shepard. Well maybe to romance Traynor. But beyond that it's not something that interests me.

I always choose female in games when I can. Who wants to stare at guy butt for 150 hours?

Reading the story discussion on these forums has surprised me just how many guys refer to their Shepard as "he". In a game all about choices and exploring different possibilities, practically inviting you to try every option available, it just seems strange to me how many people apparently always play as the same sex, especially given all the romance plots, etc.

Would you argue that those who do so are missing some major plot elements or great scenes? Anyone else feel the same way?

People refer to shepard as either "he" or "she" because it reads better than always typing he/she. It has nothing to do with never playing the other gender. However there is actually not that much different content other than hearing a different voice actor.

You already did that many playthroughs?
I did one playthrough, tried to start a second one but couldn't find the motivation to do so, went back to multiplayer..

Being a male, I identify better with playing as a male character. There is a disconnect for me when playing as a woman, as I can't envision or put myself in her shoes.

I'm a woman, and I identify with Liara to quite an extent.

In a game like ME, you have to do both just to get the total experience. If you actively refuse to do at least one femshep round you clearly have some unresolved issues with your sexuality. Come on. We're all nerds here. You can tell us.

YouTube helps a lot with seeing things I might miss by not doing a female Shepard play through.

Because I view my Shepard as a projection of myself...

And I'm not a woman.

Same as the poster above, reflection of self. Nothing to do with sexism, I've played games with female protagonists and really liked them, I just find connecting with the lead character to be important in RPG's

I tried fem Shep and just feel more disconnected from the game.... For me Shep is a male soldier always tech and biotics are cool but don't seem to fit the character... Powers are for squadmates

90% of time I spend in game I'm looking at shepard's backside, so I'd rather be looking at male shepard's perky bottom than female shepard's.

...wait what?

I am a male, so I pick male character, put myself in his shoes and mostly choose the options I would choose IRL... so to speak.

However when I try to play something radically different, like all out renegade, I choose femshep. The different gender disconnects me from the character, making "bad choices" easier to do. Its crazy, but it works.

This! The only time I've been able to do Renegade choices is when I'm playing as a male shepard. On femshep I choose just like I would if I were in the situation myself. :)

I play both male and female characters in rpgs to see both sides of the sexes story so I don't have that issue.
