I suppose I can just relate better to maleshep. I can more easily put myself in his shoes/spaceboots.

Same reasons as Reign and shinobi. I am a male, so I pick male character, put myself in his shoes and mostly choose the options I would choose IRL... so to speak.

However when I try to play something radically different, like all out renegade, I choose femshep. The different gender disconnects me from the character, making "bad choices" easier to do. Its crazy, but it works.

I always play both genders (although my FemShep is always Renegade, heh), but I view Shepard as a male. Probably because I relate to him better. I can understand his reactions and emotions. I can't necessarily understand FemShep, because I've never been a female (and let's face it, we're different).

I play as male because it breaks my immersion if i play female. Also I can't get into a romance with another guy, even if it is virtual, makes me feel creepy.

I'm sorry, but I started playing Mass Effect when I was barely seventeen years old. What seventeen year old boy WOULDN'T want to pretend to be an intergalactic bad ass?

I played as a male, and made my Shepard look as much like a thirty year old version of me as I possibly could, 'cept with a bad ass scar on the right side of his face. And I don't regret it. Just bein' honest. You asked.

why were you staring at his butt? I'm typically looking at the head/shoulders or ahead.....

I just feel awkward playing a female character. The only time I've made one is in New Vegas. I named her Grunhilda, made her bald and fat, and put all of her points into unarmed.

I find it easier to identify with males. Games like Hydrophobia don't appeal to me much because I'm playing a female.

Not a sexist opinion, just the way I feel.

I'm totally straight in real life and have no isssues romancing kaiden, garrus, thane, etc as femshep, because I'm in character, I'm playing as her, I am not her. It's the same kind of thing as playing table top rpgs, getting into character, wrapping that character around your head and playing AS them, not being yourself through them. I've even considered playing a shepard who's single through ME 1 and 2 and dating kaiden or Steve, don't know if i ever will but thats just one possibility. Because I'm playing AS that character, that character isn't me in real life.

Plus I keep in mind that as awesome as the games are, they are still just games and the people are still just digital sprites that I'm talking to.

One word. Tali. (But for reals I couldn't play a female and have an LI, it crosses too many barriers of weird)

I guess I'm not lurking too often, cause I see just about every person refer to Shepard as a "she"/"her" in these forums.

My soldier male shep is definitely with Tali, my renegade male shep is with Ashley and my soldier fem shep is with Kaiden so far out of all the saves I've imported.

I'm a dude.

In a game where I play it as if I am the character, it is logical to play as a dude.

Hence I play Dude Shepard.

Yeah, that throws me off. Especially since 3/4 of Sheps were male in ME2. Of course, I guess about 1/4 of ME2's population were just action fans who rolled out the default character and started shooting.

I will applaud BioWare for advertising FemShep more with this game, although I still think the Mass Effect series is more in favor of a male Shepard.

Can't tell if serious

I play 3 male sheps and 3 female sheps for the record.  Though to be fair I haven't gotten around to playing the femsheps, I have no desire to replay this game at this time.

I almost always play a female character in most games. In games like ME where I can really role play though, I play a male character.

What people don't realize is that it's not shepard's sex, beliefs, or relations with other people that define him and her. yes these are important aspects for the story but the basic premise of Shepard is an idea. And an idea is the most powerful force in the universe. An idea that this one person can get others to follow them to certain death, to fight no matter what the cost, to never surrender, never lay down. That there is always hope even in the face of certain death. Nothing can stop an idea, not even the reapers. You shape the idea who you individually want it, that's why there is no official canon thats why Fem shep is every bit as important and equal to male shep. The story is about the unrelenting power of the human spirit, it doesn't matter if they are male, female, straight or gay. It's not about any of that, that stuff is just for the players personal tastes, what matters is being human and climbing the ladders of victory in the face of impossible odds.

im a guy and i use a femshep, i never liked mark meers voice throught the series, too monotone and bland, hale puts some emotion behind it. i usually play male in other rpg's, but i couldn't take meers voice acting, it didn't seem natural

I'm a dude, but I don't get to play a male IRL. I tend to enjoy playing men/males in these games since I can't elsewhere.

Which is why I like having LI's open to either sex/gender of player character, so I can have my thanix cannon and.. uh, fire it too?

My primary Shepard is a male, but I do have a fem shep that ive used since ME1 for renegade. I like playing as female in certain games. I played a female in Dark Souls, Saints Row 3rd, Skyrim, and Dragon Age 1 & 2. I know a lot of people say they cant relate to playing as someone opposite their gender, but for me it adds to the game coming from such a different perspective.

And like someone else said, they're a lot more fun to look at for 40+ hours.

Eh, I'm a guy and I picked femshep first and I generally pick females if possible because it's nice to see a women save the day/world/galaxy every once in a while.

I prefer to put myself into the situation of the main character in most games. So I usually pick male.

The goal of most rpg's is to connect the player with the player character. If you're playing a female, that's not me.

So you're veteran military officers with training from hell in real life? Good to know.

And this bashing was nescesary because? I only answerd a normal question honestly, and too my knowledge, normally. It's a 'ROLE playing game' and I'm a man. It's my role. I'm a man in real life too.
We don't play with female character in games? Sue me. Should I fear you and other feminist extremists now?

It's pretty simple really. I'm a guy, he's a guy, I make choices through him, and he generally romances girls.

I have 1 femshep playthrough. Just one. That was my "let's see how good Jennifer Hale does" playthrough.

I have no interest, as a guy, in romancing a character I've been bros with for close to twenty playthroughs at this point (Garrus for those wondering), no interest in romancing Kaiden or Thane or Jacob and pretty much everything else I can experience from the perspective of a character that is the same gender as me in addition to being able to romance Tali.

So basically, it just allows me to avoid conflicts of perspective. What do I care if I have to stare at MShep's body for 120 hours, it's not like I don't play as a male character in nearly every other video game in existence. It's also not like I care that much about seeing a virtual female body clad in armor constantly run around doing things.

I wanted to romance Tali, so...

The rest of the time, the following.

If I have to look to my character's ass for the entire game, it better be an ass worth looking :P

Also, many game desingners are perverts, so the female characters are usually more elaborated.
