Why do so many IRL males play a male Shepard?

Seriously though, i guess playing female character in RPGs allows you to tell the story of your "ideal". I'm like "wish there was a girl like that".

I'm a dude.
In a game where I play it as if I am the character, it is logical to play as a dude.
Hence I play Dude Shepard.
This pretty much. I can't play female characters in a game. Doesn't feel as immersive to me. Also, Tali.

I mean, really is it that hard to understand this?
People usually play as themselves in videogames when given the chance. RP'ing is the minority action. It's fun, don't get me wrong, but I'm guaranteeing most folks, male and female, who play games with created characters, make themselves first, then consider roleplaying someone different later.
It's why humans HAVE to be included in every fantasy videogame. Seriously. I mean, I would think a fanstasy wourld would be a lot cooler without any humans, just ive me the dwarves, elves, hobbits and [unique race to make people insist it isn't a LOTR clone] and skip the humans!
BUT people want to identify and . . . BAM human!

But seriously, if you could go gay for Garrus there would be no reason not to be BroShep.

I always choose female in games when I can. Who wants to stare at guy butt for 150 hours?
Pretty much this. Most of the games I played growing up only had Male protagonists. Playing as a strong/badass female lead is a nice change of pace.
EDIT: Also, so far as playing as FemShep goes, I could listen to Jennifer Hale recite the phonebook and be uttery content.

As a girl, I always play as FemShep. I tried to use MaleShep once but I couldn't play more than 10 minutes, it was almost disgusting. Bad voice acting, tons of testosterone... I can't play +100 hours staring at a gym rat!
Amen, sis.

I tried playing ME1 as femshep years ago. I couldn't do it. She sounded like a charicature of a tough chick. I know tons of people touch themselves to Jennifer Hale's voice in ME, but I thought she sounded awful. That is not to say she's not a great voice actor.
If you play a game and the whole "i dun wanna look at a dood's butt all day" comes into your mind, you have issues.

Then played FemShep again to romance Liara (closest I got to a S/S relationship); them ME2 came around and had to start again to start ME1 again with both F & M for Garrus and Tali respectively.
The only one I have played through ME3 so far was the liara-loyal FemShep infiltrator (guess my favorite class); Liara really did grow on me. Started playing through the MaleShep Tali-loyal, but then when I got to talking with Kaiden in the hospital, and he said "Are you flirting with me Commander? No, don't answer that, let me keep the illusion..." I quit that game, and restarted from ME1 with no romance for some sexy man on kaiden action... }:3
I try to cross the gamut of race/sexuality/attitudes across all the games I play. It has nothing to do with "lewkin at buttz" through my games, but really trying for diversity... I try and roleplay my characters, imagining where they were from, and how that would affect their outlook.
The only way I can be more diverse in my playthroughs is if I can mod femshep's dress onto m-sheps body (hahaha, male shep in a leather dress... me gusta...)

Would you argue that those who do so are missing some major plot elements or great scenes? Anyone else feel the same way?

How about we let people play the way they want to, without questioning why they do so.
And the answer to your question is no, I don't feel I'm missing out on anything. It's the exact same playthrough with a different on who you romance. And experiencing romances is not important to me.

...And then there are the people who say they like staring at pixelated Femshep butt better. I'm sorry, but Broshep is attractive and all, but staring at his butt is not enough reason for me to want to play as him. xD

I find "Fem Shep" to be wanting in these areas, and have difficulty viewing her as this strong and driven woman- especially when compared to say, Ashley or Samara.
