I play both genders. My first and 3 Sheps are male, the second one is vanguard female whom i really like. In multiplayer, I largely prefer playing asari characters, because there's no roleplay involved, and ass is important, damn it.
Seriously though, i guess playing female character in RPGs allows you to tell the story of your "ideal". I'm like "wish there was a girl like that".

I'm a dude.

In a game where I play it as if I am the character, it is logical to play as a dude.

Hence I play Dude Shepard.

This pretty much. I can't play female characters in a game. Doesn't feel as immersive to me. Also, Tali.

I had a bro crush on thane in ME2 so that's the only time I played a femshep. But generally I play as a male because I put myself in the role and make the choices that I think best fit what I'd do if it was really me.

I am Shepard. Shepard is me. I romanced Ashley and then Miranda. I faced Saren, stopped the collectors, and cured the genophage.

Im not looking at another guy on the screen. I'm looking at myself and damn I'm good looking.

Uhhhhh identification?

I mean, really is it that hard to understand this?

People usually play as themselves in videogames when given the chance. RP'ing is the minority action. It's fun, don't get me wrong, but I'm guaranteeing most folks, male and female, who play games with created characters, make themselves first, then consider roleplaying someone different later.

It's why humans HAVE to be included in every fantasy videogame. Seriously. I mean, I would think a fanstasy wourld would be a lot cooler without any humans, just ive me the dwarves, elves, hobbits and [unique race to make people insist it isn't a LOTR clone] and skip the humans!

BUT people want to identify and . . . BAM human!

Because I like to relate my protagonist to me, and I can't do that with a woman.

But seriously, if you could go gay for Garrus there would be no reason not to be BroShep.

I always choose female in games when I can. Who wants to stare at guy butt for 150 hours?

Pretty much this. Most of the games I played growing up only had Male protagonists. Playing as a strong/badass female lead is a nice change of pace.

EDIT: Also, so far as playing as FemShep goes, I could listen to Jennifer Hale recite the phonebook and be uttery content.

As a girl, I always play as FemShep. I tried to use MaleShep once but I couldn't play more than 10 minutes, it was almost disgusting. Bad voice acting, tons of testosterone... I can't play +100 hours staring at a gym rat!

If I want to pretend I'm like Shepard I'm going to make "him" a male.  Besides if I want to see what a female shepard does or says I'll just watch youtube.  This is a matter of personel preference so they really isn't a right or wrong answer.

Because I like to imagine myself in the role of the character in the game I'm playing? I don't imagine myself as a woman. Guys that do... well... that's their right. I don't have the same problem with them that Jesus does!

I tried playing ME1 as femshep years ago. I couldn't do it. She sounded like a charicature of a tough chick. I know tons of people touch themselves to Jennifer Hale's voice in ME, but I thought she sounded awful. That is not to say she's not a great voice actor.

If you play a game and the whole "i dun wanna look at a dood's butt all day" comes into your mind, you have issues.

I'm a guy, but whenever I can I play as a female; Gears 3, Dragon Age, Mass Effect, Reach. Probably cause I can think of worse things to do then look at girls all day. Also I'm a feminist, so I support badass women.

I play both, my Maleshep is my main character and a paragade, and my femshep is is either paragon or renegade depending on the time of the month.

I play the gamut of characters, usually starting with FemShep Infiltrator (because I <3 Jennifer Hale's voice so much!) and I like to think that despite my being a man, a strong female character is a fun character to play. And at the start it was the only way to romance Kaiden (om nom sexy man meats!); then played MaleShep Adept (doing my best to make Mohamad Shepard as middle-eastern looking as possible) and romanced Ash... but by the time I got to virmire, I couldn't leave Kaiden behind.

Then played FemShep again to romance Liara (closest I got to a S/S relationship); them ME2 came around and had to start again to start ME1 again with both F & M for Garrus and Tali respectively.

The only one I have played through ME3 so far was the liara-loyal FemShep infiltrator (guess my favorite class); Liara really did grow on me. Started playing through the MaleShep Tali-loyal, but then when I got to talking with Kaiden in the hospital, and he said "Are you flirting with me Commander? No, don't answer that, let me keep the illusion..." I quit that game, and restarted from ME1 with no romance for some sexy man on kaiden action... }:3

I try to cross the gamut of race/sexuality/attitudes across all the games I play. It has nothing to do with "lewkin at buttz" through my games, but really trying for diversity... I try and roleplay my characters, imagining where they were from, and how that would affect their outlook.

The only way I can be more diverse in my playthroughs is if I can mod femshep's dress onto m-sheps body (hahaha, male shep in a leather dress... me gusta...)

Why do so many IRL females play a female Shepard?

Would you argue that those who do so are missing some major plot elements or great scenes? Anyone else feel the same way?

..................................................

..................................................

How about we let people play the way they want to, without questioning why they do so.

And the answer to your question is no, I don't feel I'm missing out on anything. It's the exact same playthrough with a different on who you romance. And experiencing romances is not important to me.

Many men play male Shepard for the same reason I play Femshep, I identify better with my own gender and feel I can get more involved.

...And then there are the people who say they like staring at pixelated Femshep butt better. I'm sorry, but Broshep is attractive and all, but staring at his butt is not enough reason for me to want to play as him. xD

I simply cannot immerse myself in the setting as a female, as this is a roleplaying game and I seek to adopt the role of Shepard in a first-person nature. That said, I personally find male Shepard to be more believable from physique to the quality and intensity of voice acting.

I find "Fem Shep" to be wanting in these areas, and have difficulty viewing her as this strong and driven woman- especially when compared to say, Ashley or Samara.

Quite simply I play as 'mark vanderloo' Shepard as that is the default intended look for John Shepard.. As its an RPG it allows you to customise the character if you see fit however..  the default Shepard is how he looks.. Hence why the vids, adverts, game box covers and the toys look like him
