Why do so many IRL males play a male Shepard?

It's just too much to miss out on only playing one sex.

A male that plays a female in games is gender confused. Not saying you're gay but there is a bit of confusion going on there.
Wow thanks Dr. Freud, but I think you might be thinking narrow here
Unlike many, who identify the character as an extension of themselves, I see the character as seperate from me.
I've never played many RPG's so for me, its impossible to think of myself as the character. To me, its always the Character's story that I follow. With the choices, I just feel like the DIRECTOR and WRITER of a movie where I get to choose what the character is like and what will unfold next.
So I like playing director, you like playing actor. That's the only difference. Not gender confusion lol.

I agree OP, if you stick with just male or female Shep you're missing out big time. Good example is the final scene with Thane is much more meaningful and sad with a femshep, even without pursuing his LI and the FemShep/Garrus LI is very entertaining and really sad near the end.
It's just too much to miss out on only playing one sex.
Actually Femshep Good Bye to Garrus before the final fight, where the voice seems to choke up and stuff, was pretty amazing and really communicated the emotions. I don't think the Male shep chokes up lol.
Oh and the dreams and interaction with the kid seemed more natural with femshep... perhaps due to the maternal aspect of females....

You can't really have this hard a time understanding that it's hard for males to to connect to a female protagonist? Do you really find it that hard to believe? Especially in ME when people basically try to play themselves if they were in shep's shoes.
Honestly? I do have a hard time understanding it because I don't feel the same way so I have no first person perspective of how other people feel about it. I'm perfectly happy to be a straight male but to connect with a female protagonist even when living out my ideals and emotions through her. Maybe its just because I'm quite an emotional person and find it easy to empathise.
I guess my point is why should gender matter so much? People are just people at the end of the day.

I obviously can't speak for male gamers but as a female I'd say the the idea people are just people at the end of the day isn't really true. Your gender, your race and other characteristics definitely impact the way you interact with the world, or more importantly how the world interacts with you. I'm fine playing as a straight white male in video games, mostly because I'm used to it, but I'll always connect to female characters more. It's the same thing with nearly every other media, I think Resevoir Dogs is the best Tarantino movie but Kill Bill and Jackie Brown will always be my favorites, because I understand so much more about the main characters in those ones. I love Doctor Who, and I love Sherlock Holmes, but I can't relate to them as throughougly as I can to a female character because on it's most basic level the world interacts with them differently than how it interacts with me.

Actually, I just find the whole Shepard being female unrealistic as well. Blame the badass movies of the 80's if you must, but that's how it is.

Not sure what you really want to know, other than I enjoy Femshep/Liara more than Shep/Liara.

Ok evidently a poor choice of wording on my part.
The point I was trying to get to was: surely it matters more who people are and what they are like rather than what gender they are? Some games I identify with the female version more than the male for numerous subtle reasons, in others vice-versa. I choose appropriately.

Although once the ending is fixed/clarified/whatever, I do plan on starting from ME1 as a femshep just to see what I'm missing (in addition to a renegade maleshep based on Emile Heskey - but that can wait).

I prefer to put myself into the situation of the main character in most games. So I usually pick male.

When I'm playing as a male I always use the default look because I'm a graphics **** and I can't stand the lower quality textures for created faces, I'm forced to customize my femshep in ME3 though because the default one wears makeup and I think it looks ridiculous (I always go for the natural look on my femsheps - no makeup).
However, I've worked in the game industry for about 10 years through many roles up to and including producer. Part of the dev process is focus testing (I always feel a little creepy doing this, sitting with a group of other designers/producers on one side of a one-way mirror watching our focus-group testers) and I do have some insight into the subject.
For younger players (pre-puberty) we've found that little girls are far more comfortable playing a male character than little boys are playing a female character. However, once they get older (post-puberty) this switches and males are more likely to play as a female character than females are to play male a character (given the choice). Why this is exactly I'm not really sure, I'm not a psychologist, but there it is.
