As player, I'm not fell myself as Shepard, I'm the architect of a hero.
And I always prefer heroines.

That is in my opniom the key.

Because that's what I choose. It's not such a surprising thing, really...

Mass Effect is all about my choices, with my Shepard saving the galaxy.

I cannot identify with a female avatar in such a player-choice-driven environment. I have nothing against females, but I cannot identify as one.

I bet all of these "IRL males" are just women pretending to be men. Everyone knows there are no men on the internet. Let's see some visual evidence, "boys"! Men shouldn't be talking on the internet anyway, they should be back in the coal mines where they belong.

is this a real question? I think its preety much self explainitory. In our culture we our molded to fit specific gender roles we are taught to be  a man or a woman and to not stray from that(im not slamming on bi's this is just what is taught as a society) Even in a game this is a hard thing to overcome most men arnt comfortable playing as girl and id think it was the same for them. However since it is just a game some men do play as girl. I have a single fem shep, but most of plays are males
hope this helps

You stare at your toon's butt for 150 hours?

I'm a guy and as a guy, I have no interest in playing as a "she". I have no interest in ever being a female and can't ever put myself in that state of mind. As far as staring at sheploo's butt, I don't get my jollies from a videogame and find it strange that anyone would. To be honest, the whole videogame romance thing is ridiculous to me.

in this case aren't the gender roles exactly the same though? I agree with you there is something that feels odd to me as a male playing a female, but femshep and maleshep are interchangeable aside from one's lack of a penis/vagina.

Because naming a female Jason would be weird.

I prefer to put myself into the situation of the main character in most games. So I usually pick male.

I am not the character, the character is not me. I am merely guiding them, helping them, nurturing their relationships with other characters, sharing in their emotional journey to a degree but most importantly making sure they survive to fight another day. And, for whatever reason, as a male I find that easier to do with a female character. Always have done, even when I was playing Ultima Online and it was in those days very much frowned upon if you were playing a character of the opposite gender.

Maybe I just care about them a little bit more.

Plus I could listen to Jennifer Hale forever.

And there is just something very sweet, honest and real about FemShep's relationship with Liara. (Yeah Ok, they look hot together. )

Hales voice is growing on me, But I prefer male shepard overall. The voice acting is superior as well as male. Little scenes like when you tell the marines to open fire. Hale screams a battle cry that doesnt fit the setting *attaaack!*. Male shap firmly says *attack*! much better.

I usually play fem toons for games that are not as immersive. Male toons when I get to make choices that require me being the character

So for example in wow I dont care the toon is an avatar with no real persona. Me3 shep has to be male, I see myself as shep, even made him look similar to me * relatively speaking*

This is a thread where men have to actually defend their decision to play male characters.

I like to play characters I can identify with - since I'm a guy, I can easier achieve that goal by playing maleshep. Also (call me an ass If you like) femshep just feels...wrong. Maybe I'm ignorant, but I just can't imagine a woman doing the stuff Shepard does. Yes, I know, women are just as capable as men etc. etc., and I'm not doubting that, I just personally feel that it takes copious amounts of testosterone to blow up giant sentient starships.

Feel free to send me your hateful comments via PM.:innocent:

If the game is good i play as both, to get the most out of it. Even though the changes are small in most parts. I remember i played DA:O as female with my "canon" playthrough to get the "best ending". Tbh in DA:O also playing the city elf, the female char has a way better origin story. Or its more engaging. In the mass effect series i just cant/couldnt stand msheps voice acting. It was just flat, and didnt convey emotions even half as good as femshep. And after that i just stook to it. Could never imagine doing ME game as mshep simply because of this.

A male that plays a female in games is gender confused. Not saying you're gay but there is a bit of confusion going on there.

Im a male, i know i am a male there is no gender confusion. You however are a closed minded fool.

He's not a fool.
He didn't buy Dragon Age 2!

I didnt buy it ^^ this was free. Perks of working management for a digital game vendor.

So I'm closed minded for stating what most psychiatrist will tell you? Interesting logic ya got there sparky.
I didn't say that I never play female characters, I just refuse to play a FemShep.

I dunno, I designed my FemShep to be rather average looking because I thought it fit the character.

Because it makes my secret **** fantasy about Liara seem more plausible. As a Male, I can think away Shep and put me there more easily.

I like how the OP seems to think we wouldn't have figured out his meaning if he just put, "why do males play male Shepard" for his title.

I don't know about you guys, but I do because I think Mark Vanderloo's ass is amazing and I want him in places that are considered intolerably taboo in even Amsterdam.
