Satirical thread. Most taking it serious. Win.

I've seen people seriously ask this question though, for both ME and other games where you can choose character (such as fighting games, since they tend to have both male and female options) or choose gender of character.

For some games, such as fighting games, I really don't know why people question it at all. In games like that, the different characters have different abilities. I know some guys who only play girls in fighting games and NOT because she's "hot" or anything necessarily. Stereotypically, the female characters in fighting games tend to be speedy, their trade off being that they can't take a beating as well. Some people just have that preference in quick characters.

For RPGs where you get to make a character, gender doesn't generally matter for stats. It mostly affects appearance and maybe some minor dialog options. Then it comes down to a few different things: 1) looks, 2) the minor benefits of being a certain gender (dialog, romance, etc), or 3) roleplaying.

I'm female but I tend to fall in the #3 category. Some games I'll play a guy. Some games I play a girl. It just depends on what my mood is the day I make a character and what sort of character I want to attempt to roleplay.

Also, it doesn't affect "manliness" if a guy decides to roleplay a female character. I used to play D&D and I knew a guy in the US military who was a fairly manly sort of guy, but he DMed a lot and would play characters of any gender thanks to that. One time when I was DMing he decided to roll up a very pathetically weak, whiny female character that constantly needed to be taken care of. He roleplayed her well. He even faked tears a few times for hilarity's sake. It was probably the most fun D&D game my group ever played, and we still look back at his performance as quite good but funny at the same time. Great times.

I always choose female in games when I can. Who wants to stare at guy butt for 150 hours?

Why would you be staring at his butt?

Not that there's anything wrong with your eyes constantly gravitating towards male Shepard's butt instead of the beautiful locations, interesting aliens, and deadly enemies. It takes all types. ;)

My first and main Shepard was a male and is the only one I feel real and I have an emotional conection with.
Also, I have one lesbian femshep, but she's just there for the lulz and to see the f/f scenes, she's not MY character unlike my main Shepard.
So Shepard is a he for me, but I respect the people who refers to him as a she, it just doesn't bother me what others do in their games.

I do not understand female psyche very well, I do not think I would be a good candidate to play such a role. Also, I would not enjoy the story that much, because of impossibility to project my goals into goals of my character. I also like romancing in games a lot, cause I have no life, and I do not fancy the idea of not dating Tali. Quite simple really, I also used to be a GM in p&p RPG and I think my female NPCs were very poorly written. It is not like I do not want to understand, it is simply that I do not. I may try it later time, to explore the differences, but I am not sure how I will cope with romance interests there, since my understanding on that specific subject is really non-existant.

To sum it up, it is the same thread in brain that warns me from going into woman restroom.

Reading the story discussion on these forums has surprised me just how many guys refer to their Shepard as "he". In a game all about choices and exploring different possibilities, practically inviting you to try every option available, it just seems strange to me how many people apparently always play as the same sex, especially given all the romance plots, etc.

Would you argue that those who do so are missing some major plot elements or great scenes? Anyone else feel the same way?

In any game that gives me the choice, (i.e. Dragon Age series, Elder Scroll series, Mass Effect, etc.) I choose to play the ladies.

I do not believe that the character is a virtual incarnation of myself, and I do not want to spend countless hours staring at a dude. Also, when and if the opportunity arises, lesbian main characters ROCK.

I always play both, mainly because it's kind of like playing a different game when you have a completely different actor saying the lines.

Why not? is just as justified a question, moreso considering Shep, up until 3 as a male in advertising, setting up a default.

I choose FemShep just because it makes the story more interesting IMO.

its an RPG. a role playing game. in game, i am supposed to make the decision i would make. me being shepard. i am a man. shepard is a man. if i were a woman, shepard would be a woman. also, everybody saying "lol i want to stare at female shepards butt" are weird. shepard is not a real person. you should feel no sexual attraction to him/her.

Being scared to look at a guy's ass for a few hours is actually a sign you might have some undiscovered feelings there. But you even had this with Pokemon, boys playing the girls sprite because it looked better. I think the arguments about the voice acting and looking at the guy's ass aren't more interesting than that example.

In the Final Hours app it shows that like 80 percent play male. I think among fanboys there are more guys playing girls for some reason.

In DA-O and DA2 I had several playthoughs of female hawkes/wardens, however in ME I dont care for FemShep's VA at all, after listening to the same things said by bro and fem shep, femshep's rendition sucked imo. I've said it before once if FemHawke's VA was FemShep's VA then I'd be more then happy to play as them.

Also, you cant give FemShep a sweet beard.

Exactly what's being said. People like to identify with the lead role. I believe the growing numbers of female gamers is starting to show in the industry, as I find it's much more common to find games with strong female leads and supporting characters.

Also, (this might be a bit off topic, but I've seen the issue raised. And G4's Morgan Webb has really been p*ssing me off with all this talk) For those complaining that females in games are made "too attractive" and are targeted specifically at male gamers, you have to realize that people, (especially artists) prefer to look and come up with things that are attractive to the eye at first glance. In a video game that is modeled and created by artists, I think that it only makes sense that the majority of characters in a game (whether they be male or female leads or NPC's) look more attractive, as it's the artists JOB to make it look good. When they want an ugly character, they are usually MEANT to be ugly as a reference to what the character represents (a villain, a monster, etc) and are designed accordingly.

I highly doubt that the artist's are sitting in a room and coming up with ideas in an attempt to objectify women by making them look attractive. The same exact thing could be said about males in video games primarily having too muscular of a physique and too perfect of hair and are too witty with the ladies. For any guy who has a problem in those areas, does this not set an unrealistic standard to what we should look like? I'm by no means a James Vega looking dude, but does it bother me he's in the game? (Well ya, cause he's a F****** idiot who doesn't belong on my ship. But not because he has a better body.)

Would it have made any difference to the campaigns plot if the asari were, instead of being an attractive female race, all 500lbs and had beards?

Also, the whole "sexism" argument bugs me because I find it at times it to be a very one-sided argument coming from women (I think guys just don't care as much, but that's only my opinion). Males are under just as much scrutiny as females in this world. The average guy starts going bald by 30, has a beer gut (at the least) and has body hair. Does that describe MaleShep or Thane or Garrus or Jacob or James? No.

My goal is not to offend. Just to point out that it's a bit hypocritical.

Tend to almost always play female charachters in games, don't realy have a reason, it just happends without me thinking. However in ME one major reason is that Jennifer Hale is a lot better voice actor. Also, i tend to NOT play as myself (you know, roleplaying) in RPGS, and i guess picking a female charachter helps with the disconectbetween me and the avatar.

I play my Shep male mainly because Jennifer Hale is and always will be Bastila in the back of my head, so whenever I try to roll a femshep my immersion breaks almost instantly, but that's just me...

Truth. The default M Shepard is a Dutch Banana Republic model. Talk about unrealistic expectations.

That said, lots of people try to make the least attractive Shep possible. It's quite amusing.

I play as a male mostly because i am a male myself. I don't have the perspective of being female and i dont know how i would react differently (if i would at all). I still play a femshep every now and again but i cant immerse myself as well, but i do really enjoy Hale's voice acting :).

Same reasons as Reign and shinobi. I am a male, so I pick male character, put myself in his shoes and mostly choose the options I would choose IRL... so to speak.

However when I try to play something radically different, like all out renegade, I choose femshep. The different gender disconnects me from the character, making "bad choices" easier to do. Its crazy, but it works.

I play femshep in ME because I grew up with the Metroid series, nothing wrong with a heroine saving the galaxy from certain doom. and in terms of race, 50/50 between caucasian and latina, caucasian because Samus is caucasian, latina because im latina, so having a latina character feels a bit more at home
