I think both character and VA are great, but then I loved Alistair too. I'm noticing a trend that Kaiden fans are often Alistair fans and sometimes Anders fans as well. I guess some of us just find whining attractive? :P

I think Raphael did a wonderful job, I love Kaidan as a character. People are entitled to their own opinions though of course, VA or any actors have their lover/haters.

I still dont get the "whiny" comment's, he says something about his headaches once. I think every character in ME2 complained or had some issue no? *gets confused*

Miranda: Oh why am I so perfect?
Garrus: Life as a vigilante wasnt as great and I lost my men and want revenge
Tali: Oh woe my race.
Jacob: Oh I have slight father issues
Thane: I ignored my family
Jack: I have a messed up childhood
Grunt: I was tank born, I'm pure but Krogan wont accept me
Samara: I gave birth to evil

Note I dont hate any of these characters. I love them all pretty much but they all have their own issues and moment's of being in a way whiny, Kaidan isnt alone in that fact.

Pretty much this. I actually found him to be one of the least whiny characters. When he opens up and talks about the crappy moments in his life, he isn't all, "woe is me! No one can understand my troubles!" He simply explains what has happened to him in a saddened way. I mean, if a loved one of yours died, even if you dealt with it and got over it, you wouldn't be all upbeat and peppy when explaining that moment in your life. He even states, "but that is my baggage, Commander," and, "I don't want to come off as a whiner."

Kaidan has always been my Shepard's bro. I find Sbarge's performance to be gripping and top-notch.

But that's only my opinion. ^_^

His voice is very unique and Kaidan is a soft spoken guy. He's passionate at times but he's never going to be loud and obnoxious like other characters. I found his goodbye scene to be the most emotional and real of all the characters.

The lengths people hate this guy just cause his voice though... I mean do you go around wanting to punch new people when you hear a voice that doesn't tickle your eardrums?

Considering Kaidan has always seemed like a more subdued and mellow character than some of the others, it makes sense that his voice fits the character. So I consider his voice to be well acted.

I can't see him as anything other than stupid, whiny Carth. I hated Carth. I hated him so much. Hated his stupid whining. Ughhglskhgsfgh. HATE.

Whenever Kaiden talks in squad (when I'm forced to take him) I just mumble "shut up, Carth, shut up, Carth, GOD SHUT UP CARTH I HATE YOU".

To which my wife laughs her butt off, because she shares the opinion that the only thing that could improve Carth is the oral application of a large piece of duct tape. :D

Edit:  To put in perspective how much I hate the sounds that come out of Kaiden's face, I'd rather listen to hours of ME1's "ENEMIES EVERYWHERE!  GOGOGO!  HOLD THE LINE!  I WILL DESTROY YOU!  ENEMIES EVERYWHERE!" than listen to one second of Kaiden talking.

I'm a Fenris fan but it's more like we don't see talking to someone about their problems and expressing feelings to be whining. I could maybe see how you could make the argument with Fenris, Anders, and Alistair, but I don't get it with Kaidan. Nothing he says strikes me as whiny. It's all perfectly reasonable.

But let's be honest, Kaidan never had a chance to be the most awesome romance.
That's clearly Carth Onasi. I'm not kidding, I love Carth. <3

Or Altair. A difficult match!

Something I've picked up on is that a lot of fans make decisions that they justify with logic that would be considered downright psychopathic if they did a similar act in reality.

"Kaidan is boring so he dies on Virmire."
"I saved Kaidan because Ashley is a dumb racist."
"I deliberately let [insert least favorite character here] die on the Suicide Mission in my 'canon' playthrough." This one I've seen a lot in reference to Jack.

I think he was in character. When you take into account his work in KOTOR and Republic Commando, I think it becomes evident that he is a versatile voice actor who can do multiple types of roles.

I was listening to Kaidens voice acting in ME3 and it got me to thinking. {mostly about when the new season of dexter starts] His voice is so dull and lifeless. I began to think that Raphael Sbarge was a terrible voice actor. But then I got to thinking. What if Raphael understands Kaidens character. Virmire, Horizon, and Mars. Kaidens watched his life be chosen over a woman with three sisters. He's watched as he failed to save the Colony he was trying to protect. He's watched Shepard die only to be brought back to life by Cerberus a terrorist organization, he's watched his hometown fall to the reapers, and then he got pummeled near to death by Eva Core. Maybe he's just tired of life. Maybe the lifelessness in his voice is like Garrus comment on Palavens moon "How long till the fight is kicked out of you" Maybe Kaiden's just permanently broken and thats why he sounds the way he does. In that case Raphael's an amazing V.A. So weigh in on the issue.

Topic title and content are FAIL, OP.

Don't f*ck with Carth, man.

I love Raphael S'Barges voice acting. It's very nuanced and depicts how I see Kaidan - calm, thoughtful, soft-spoken - but that's just my opinion.

btw: "He's whiny/boring" seems to be the stock response of a lot of boys to most if not all of the male npc's female pc's can romance. It's actually kind of pathetic.

So is, "She's just a B****, overtly sexual hoe, etc" responses from girl gamers towards the male pc's female romanceable npc's too.

I guess it's just some weird jealousy thing?

IMO he did a great job in ME3 actually. He sounded a bit dull in ME1, but this time I really liked Sbarge's VA.

Anyways I consider Kaidan the only possible romance for my femShep in ME3 so keeping him around is a must, if for that reason alone. (well sorry Garrus fans, while he's amazing bro and all, I just can't imagine making out with dinobird). And I think both Sbarge and Hale really shined in the romance scenes.

People who don't like Jack aren't people anyway so I just ignore them.

Unlike many others I missed Star Wars franchise mostly, so Carth or Scorch are just alphabet soup to me. Regardless, I like Kaidan and have no problems with Jacob, James or whoever there is. Although, to be honest, Ashley in ME3 left some strange "residue". However, I haven't seen her for entire playthrough (in all mines she left on Virmire), just few saves made by friend, right before "special dialogues". Tend to agree with Jeremy Jahns.
Returning to Kaidan - I think he is probably most normal guy on the crew. Of course he have some cockroach party in his head, but who doesn't? His character and VO is one of few things I really liked in ME3.

When you consider Kaidan's past (Jump Zero) and his adventures with Shepard, it's difficult to think Mr. Sbarge wouldn't voice him in a more subdued manner. In my mind, it fit perfectly.

I'm biased, though. His work with Carth Onasi in KotOR was some of the best voice acting I've ever heard. I completely believed this character had lost everything dear to him.

I always thought responses about Ashley similar to that were from the male populace.

It's his voice, not his voice-acting. The acting is great. He has a breathy, sappy love-song quality to his voice. Just after ME1 came out, there was a poll about this. Almost universally, men found his character annoying or whiny. Just as universally, women loved him.

Regardless, he's much better in ME3, and he has Reave.

I don't like Kaidan so I don't like his VA :)
Jk.

You've got me thinking but... No. I seriously think that that is just poor voice acting, not being in character. Could be both though.

Many guys are threatened by attractive male leads, simple. Let's not pretend it just happens to be a coincidence that virtually all human male leads in Bioware games are disliked/ridiculed, mostly by guys

I liked his VA at the beginning but found that it got progressively worse through out the game. He just sounded awkward and whiny when talking to Shepard in the Normandy or on the Citadel.

Yeah I do agree, it was more a tongue-in-cheek comment. Actually I think he complains remarkably little and do feel rather defensive when people call him whiny (though, they can have their opinion ofc). Other than his career, pretty much none of his life has gone right + constant headaches. I actually wouldn't blame him if he *did* whine.
