I prefered Meer to Hale for one particular reason:

I can't say I dislike either, as I thought they were both excellent. But if I were to choose a favorite ...
Probably Hale.

Hale is more consistent I feel. Meer does an ok job, but can be a little uneven at times. I would love to hear Kevin Conroy do Shepard. That would be epic.
And have Mark Hamill voice all of the other characters.

Meer has a natural soldier-ish voice, and it worked well. He didn't need to force it.
I'm playing through my FemShep now, and while she's a good VA I find she's trying way too hard to sound 'badass', and adding a sort of raspyness to the end of literally almost every line. It drives me insane. Now that I've noticed it, I hear it in everything!
Just my opinion though.
You are wrong and you are a grotesquely ugly freak.

I do have to agree with the opinion that male Shep seems to fit the Paragon role a bit better than FemShep, who fits the renegade better. Even though either voice actor could do either role well, they just seemed to have different personalities in general. Case in point, on Mars, male Shepard hesitates when he states that "Delta Team" took out the Alliance reinforcements, where the female Shepard pulls it off flawlessly.

Both are excellent.
I'm another one of those heretics that actually likes both voices. The internet would lead you to believe you can't like both (just like you can't like both Star Trek and Star Wars apparently). I've found that neither of them is consistently better than the other. In other words, some parts of the script are better performed by Meer, and some parts are better performed by Hale.
The final talk with Anderson for example, I think comes across as a more emotional moment with Hale. But they both did some mighty fine work in the series.

Female Shepard is very masculine for a woman in general. Female Shepard has a masculine voice when compared to someone like Ashley, who retains a lot of her femininity. Bioware makes female Shepard very masculine so the story makes more sense.
Female Shepard, in my opinion, exists to give people the story from an alternative perspective and to also satisfy female players who want to role play as a female character.
The story just seems to be written with Male Shepard as the main protagonist.
When the series was first given to us, it was advertised as a this RPG where you could role play as a space badass who got to romance blue chicks and human chicks. James Bond crossed with Captain Kirk in Space. Liara and Ashley were the "Bond Girls."

Although I prefer FemShep, I still cringe everytime she uses her aggresive flirt-voice, especially with Jacob & Garrus in ME2 and romanced Thane is ME3...Like she overdosed on the horny-pills or something

In all seriousness though, I find Hale's performance better. Especially at the end when Shepard is talking with Anderson and struggling to reach the console.

Watch Stargate SG-1 and Star Trek:TNG.
Meer could deilver "Tea, Earl Grey, Hot" much better. Sci Fi is all about delivering badass one liners in a specific manner.

they are both good voice actors, but that "Cult of Hale" crowd that goes on and on about her is as annoying as hell
I find myself really starting to agree with this. I love Jennifer Hale, though, since I prefer to play as male Shepard, I don't play her that often, but the people who claim that she is perfect and flawless and that she is better than Mark Meer almost entirely on the basis of her BEING Jennifer Hale really start to bug me. Both have their good and bad deliveries and moments in the course of the game.
People have preferences that are not yours. Film at eleven.

Personally I think Maleshep is the better paragon, but that the Femsheps plays as the better renegade.
But that is just my opinion, no need to go spreading it around.
This.
Meer's vocie just doesn't work with renegade, imo. Doesn't feel as natural as Hale doing renegade
And while Hale does sound good when playing paragon, I feel Meer suits it better

Overall, ME3 was the best for both of them, especially Meer. A lot of it due to the better writing and more importantly voice directing. I don't know if they got someone different, but they were able to direct ALL of the actors much better.
However, the whole "Hale is superior" crowd is incredibly annoying.

I just dont find a woman saving the galaxy believable, so Meer is the better Shep.
