Why all the jacob hate? My shep was male, so i understood him finding a girl and settling down.

As a female playing femShep Jacob is just annoying as hell. That he cheats on the Sheps that romance him, is kind of the nail in the coffin

I cheated on liara with tali..then went back to liara...heavy risk..

I don't care for Vega because the cast was plenty big without him. Same for EDI's new robot body, which existed solely so that Joker could get some action. It would have been better to include more characters from the previous games, rather then create new characters for the sake of having new characters.

I did miss having a Krogan, but then again, I liked James. Of course, I'm a woman and I think the fact that James isn't romanceable is a huge waste of manly man (and I love me some manly men), but hey, whatever.

I brake for Tyrannosaurus Flex.

This.

I also want to chime in that when James was first announced, I was adamantly anti-Vega. But I found him surprisingly likable. I actually wish they had expanded on his character more - the writing sort of doomed him to a place of mediocrity.

I liked him alright. I think if I had more interactions with him, it would have been better. I didn't feel really connected to him, and so that whole N7 mentor thing seemed a little forced because of it (whether Shepard was the only N7 there or not).

To clarify my "Mass Effecsey Shore" comment: Vega gambles a lot, partys a lot, and lets be honest, he isn't the sharpest knife in the drawer. That said, I don't hate the guy. He amuses me.

You've just described your average grunt.

For what it's worth, I had three close(ish) friends (and the cousin I mentioned) join the Marines straight out of high school, and they love to party and drink A LOT, much more than they used to. I spent the weekend in Vegas with two of them three years ago when they were still in, and whoa... Let's just say I wasn't even close to keeping up with them.

I can see how you could turn that into a Jersey Shore thing, though, considering he does kind of look the part.

Jimmy Vega's not good. He's not bad. He's inert.

He's a marine that took it unto himself to tag along with Shepard and crew. He knows Shepard -somehow-, though we're never told why and left to assume. He likes to give inappropriate nicknames to his superiors, he's never in uniform, the last time he had a command he got everyone killed... and he's somehow being scouted by N7 for recruitment. Because this is totally the profile of an elite soldier..

He's a blank space that's taking up a spot that could be occupied by a more interesting character.

Blame BioWare for making his introduction a comic instead of explaining it in-game. Same thing they did with Liara and the Shadow Broker thing, until LotSB came out.

Vega is not a character. He is a caricature, and is a plot device. Invented for folks new to the franchise, he could be taken on missions and would ask questions any veteran would already know the answer to. He asked lore questions so we didn't have to. "Who were the Protheans?" "I thought the asari were just..." etc etc. With the combination of auto-dialogue, Vega becomes a default investigate option on every mission.

Since I'm a veteran, and know the lore, he became a throw away character. He added nothing knew, rehashed plot points I could recite by heart, and insisted on calling me "Loco". No thank you.

Well, since Jimmy's a fictional character any criticism of how he's presented is to be blamed on his creators. Bioware, in this case. Knowing where the blame rests and why doesn't make him any more interesting, however.

I don't really have a problem with Vega as such, I never did either unlike some people who rejected him as soon as the first picture showed up.
But with that said I would have prefered to see Vega gone in favor of ANY ME1 or ME2 squad member returning as a permanent one in ME3. Even a ghost Ashley. A ghost Ashley would have been better.

Meh, he was the same as Kaiden in ME1 and Jacob in ME2, boring, forgettable, and didn't make me care one bit. Does Bioware spend more time on female NPC's perhaps?, Though Garrus, Thane, Wrex and Grunt are all fine...hmm.

I think a lot of the trouble with Vega's appearance is that it crushes the very basic human hope that "tribal tattoos" would have fallen to the wayside before we joined the galactic community and embarrassed ourselves.

Personally, I liked Lt. Vega. Although his character isn't quite as fun with a Male Shepard as it is with a female Shepard.

Then again, I also liked Kaiden and Jacob- granted they were far from my favorite characters.

Also, Red Dust, nothing truly goes out of style. Sure it fades for a time, perhaps a decade or two, but eventually they make a comeback. Also, it could also be a personal choice of style for him. After all, how many non-Asari or Turian characters have tattoos or markings of any kind? The only ones I can think of are Zaeed and Vega.

after Wrex and Grunt, He is rather plain.

If they had given him a personality of a mixture between

Grunt and Moradin... He would have been a trip...

he is just so much less than the characters he had to follow

The tried too hard to make him cool and badass. He's an amalgamation of Soap McTavish, Dom Santiago, and Buck from Halo:ODST.

Overall he comes off as an okay dude but the way they went about designing his character model is just a bit on the lame side.

I thought Freddie Prince's Jr's performance rescued him from douchebaggery. Hats off to him. He turned what would have been a lame character into a likeable one even if he does have lame tattoos.

Vega haters don't ever use him so they don't know him.

He's just a jersey shore reject when you look from outside.

Becomes likeable when you actually hang out with him

I can agree with this.  I thought Freddie Prince was fantastic, and if you watch the voice actors interviews available through youtube, he seemed to be genuinely excited about the project and that's never a bad thing.

He was tolerable. I think having a burgeoning bromance with Garrus throughout the series, and Kaiden turning out to have far more depth of character in the final game, Vega didn't really stand much of a chance to win anyone over.

I liked him more than Jacob or Kaidan, that's for sure. I thought he was a good character in the end.

If you could take three people on missions instead of two I'd probably always take him, just so that he could be exposed to the crazy **** that Shepard and co. get up to on a daily basis. However, he's just not quite as interesting as a living Prothean, my love interest or Garrus, so unfortunately he had to stay on the ship most of the time.

My issue with Vega is that he doesn't have the history with the player that the other characters in Mass Effect 3 do. While I don't necessarily dislike Vega, there are FAR more interesting characters to bring on missions that I feel more strongly about after getting to know them over the course of two prior games.

Don't get me wrong, I talked to the guy all the time on the Normandy, but I never took him off the ship unless it was required for the mission (which wasn't many times).

I wasn't addressing whether you found him interesting or uninteresting.  My response was specifically targetted at:

Just explaining the lack of explanation as to how and why he knows Shepard.

He just didn't have the character development to make me care. I think that Bioware should have replaced him with an already well established character, e.g. have Anderson as part of your squad instead or something.

You know, after all shepard has done I think Loco is spot on.
