I liked him, his dialogue options with femshep were particularly funny I thought.

I don't hate him... I'm a big fan of beefcake cardboard standees.

I've (ducks) been going through the game again since I did pay $60 + 10 for it. Although femShep (Nadia this time -- paragon Adept saved Kaiden on Virmire) is Liara committed totally, I'm paying more attention to James. He's going through the N7 program. He's a good solid character. Not the sharpest knife in the drawer, but he's good. Kaiden got a bit more developed, too, and he joined the crew, although I did confide in Garrus that I would have taken the shot if it came down to it.

At first, I rolled my eyes and said whatever when he was announced, I was thinking at first that he was added only to appeal to the Gears/Call of Duty fans (mind you nothing wrong with them, I am just not a fan of those games). As I played through the game I ended up tolerating him and later I eventually liked his little side remarks. His conversations/jokes with Javik and Garrus was really funny. I still did not use him that much but he was not as bad as I thought he was. I thought that Freddie Prince Jr did a really good job with the VO and with giving him character.

Vega is utterly superfluous. He serves absolutely zero purpose on the ship, other than being the token ethnic guy. He's the designated Jacob of the companions; utterly without a reason to take him over any of the others. I'd rather take EDI on missions than Vega, and EDI is essentially worthless compared to the others you can have.

I even put up with Ashley's relentless whining so that I wouldn't have to take Vega on missions. He's just a character that has zero personality, zero characterization, who is replacing a plethora of other companions that could have been in the game instead of him. I'd rather have had Grunt, or Mordin (even if he does die halfway through), or Zaeed, or Kasumi, or Miranda. Zaeed, in particular, could have fit really well with the 'I hate Cerberus now' attitude that he has in the game. He wants to take his revenge on The Illusive Man and contacts you to facilitate this. Zaeed would have been better than Vega in every possible way, as many others would have been.

I like Vega.  He's a down to earth kind of guy.  Some of the scenes are kind of strange like the fighting while talking, but I didn't mind it too much.

It turns out that Kaiden/Ashley are the boring characters in this game, which is a disappointment.

Loved that line, lol.  Things like this are what make me like Vega.

It's just that we have the epic trilogy with all sorts of awesome and interesting characters that we've grown close to that they could've put in..... and they give us another damn human. Great, because Ashley and Kaiden were SO damn interesting in ME1.

Javik gets a pass because he's a damn Prothean, and has some of the best lines in the game. But Miranda, Jack, Grunt, Thane, Mordin, Samara, Jacob, and the other two DLC guys from ME2 barely get a cameo. Annoying.

I liked him. I didn't think I would, but I did. I like that he was bros with Joker and Garrus. I like that he called my Shep 'Lola' and his reasons for it (as opposed to the far less personal 'Loco'). He was like a little brother (or more aptly, the 'little brother's friend', otherwise the flirting is weird). In all of the surrogate family my Shep has had*, that's one role that was still vacant, so it worked out. ;)

*(Anderson - dad, Chakwas - mom, Tali - little sister, Grunt - adopted kid, TIM - creepy uncle)

I liked him, its a was a good way to intro new people and he kinda reminds me of Garrus with his whole "Shep role model" attitude.

Also judging by what the ladies were posting on the Motivational thread, part of the hate is just us guys being jealous.:P

I didn't want to talk to him because there was such a homosexual vibe coming from him. Which is fine, but I didn't know if at any moment being nice to him would result in a relationship. I mean, the whole "lets dance" and "loco" nickname.. and then you see him at the bar and he buys you drinks? I was certain at any moment he'd be like, "SHEPARD I LOVE YOU." and I would have locked in the relationship.

Now I regret not talking to him, he may have been interesting.

The answer to the OPs question seems to be "because he's new" and perhaps "because he wasn't needed". I don't think any of it is to do with how he turned out, as that ended up rather good. He is a good character and had he been in the squad from ME1 would probably be a fan favourite. But, a lot of people became attached to their ME2 crew and none of the new characters got to join the crew in ME3, not a single one. Javik is a novelty and so people make an exception (he's also an excellent character), but Vega gets a lot of the frustration of people that were disappointed with their favourite not being included, vented in his direction.

My own experience was that I disliked him to begin with and planned to simply ignore him, but he grew on me. He's also very effective, which helps.

Honestly, I never even thought to dislike him. When he was described in the articles leading up to the release date, I was actually kind of excited to meet him. Given what some of the ME2 Characters were doing during the game, I could understand why most of them couldnt' come back for one reason or another.

If I could choose only one character to be a squadmate from ME2, it would have been Mordin, easily one of my most favorite characters of the series. Would I have replaced him Vega? No, because Vega was more than good enough for my team. IMO, his being new was a strength, not a weakness. Was he "needed", I suppose that depends solely on preference. One thing I can confidently say about Bioware is that they make interesting characters and I love seeing new characters interact with old ones and Vega did not disappoint, and he was really the only new character that had any significant interaction with the majority of the old ones.

Javik is only a novelty because of his species. He doesn't add anything more than an extra power and assault rifle that Shep can use- and a few lines of interesting dialogue on Thessia and Rannoch. Otherwise, he doesn't really add anything either.

I liked him, because he's the only squadmate you ever get who looks and acts like an actual soldier.

"The Designated Jacob".

I like that. I want to use it to refer to any character in games where they are just there to fill space, and never really get used.  (IE, not just for Mass Effect)

Maybe shorten it to "The Jacob"

Its true.  Even in Multiplayer, I refuse to ever play as a human.  (I played with the Battlefield 3 race until I got my first pack, which contained a quarian infiltrator.)

I thought I'd love Vega when I first saw him, and didn't like him in game.

One, the terrible spanish accent at times and the DUDE DID I MENTION I SPEAK VERY VERY HUMAN LINGO LET ME REMIND YOU thing was overdone.

That and no matter what I had to encourage him into N7 when I sincerely, as a player, didn't feel like he did much worth pushing him towards N7.

The thing I loved about him was his friendship with Cortez. I thought that was the cutest part of his character- if I never. Ever. EVER. hear him call Cortez Esteban ever again.

I really liked Vega.  Plus did he end up banging Ashley when they got drunk?  I was sure he did but my Shep that was romancing Ashley was either ok with it or just didn't connect the dots....
