Are there any benefits to donating to the allies you recruit, or should I just go ahead and sell the gems and other stuff those guys request?

I have not seen any noticeable benefits.

Yea, I would like to know the answer to that too. I recently donated 2 runes to the Circle Magi and I kinda regretted it. I could use those runes now to fill up the slots for my new weapons.

You get xp for donating. I don't know about how it affects their stats at the end of game (if it does at all).

If its like Redcliffe, it should hopefully make the allies more powerful come the end battle. As well as giving you so much exp for each donation.

I read somewhere (can't remember where) that the amount and quality of your donations also determines the number of troops sent to your aid. If that's true, good. If it's not true, well, it should be.

In two playthroughs, I donated a lot but not sure how much. Neither of my characters donated everything she had. Just enough to make it look like she was interested. Novice runes, sure, have at'em.. Grandmaster, uh, no.

In both cases, she had the exact same number of allies at her side.

It definitely doesn't increase number of allies. Verified by multiple people and personally on multiple playthroughs. You always have the same number.

Are there any verified, noticeable differences?  Any truth to the post above about weapons being better?

I wondered this myself. I was expecting something like your keep in NWN2 where you can upgrade your troops armor and weapons. But after reading from others' experiences, it looks like all donations do is give you exp. Which is useful I guess if you are looking to get to level 25, but worthless otherwise.

Did anyone actually use the allies? I didn't donate and didn't bother calling on any of them anyway...

I did, on my first playthrough. Morrigan left of course so I replaced her with Wynne, whom I made some pretty bad spell choices with. No crowd control at all. I had to call the soldiers, dwarves, and elves when attacking the generals just because I had no way to control the tons of enemies they throw at you. I called the mages when fighting the archdemon, though I probably didn't need to.

Did not even net me 500 experience...

It takes a LOT to level but it's xp nonetheless. Other than that no there doesn't seem to be any "upgrade" soldier option.

On PC buying several stacks of herbs from the Dalish netted me a level or two. So I wouldnt call it a total waste

How do you donate? I have tried talking to the emmisaries in camp but do not get a "donate" option.

I don't know I had a hitload of gold in my 3rd playthrough my dwarf noble warrior and donated somthing like 90 gold to the soldiers of redcliffe and they were still in medium armour with kite shields and swords but were a ****load tougher and all their equipment was silverite, i lost only two fighting in the market district against all those ogres, they killed half of them, likewise i donated alot of gems to the dwarves they also lasted much longer than any of my other playthroughs, however i donated very few items to the elves and they were lacking helmets and were armed with like whitewood or elm bows they were ****, so i think donations do affect the soldiers you just have to be more observant

What is amazing is that you can give runes to the mages, but a mage has no use for runes (no slot in the staff). Also, you can not give any staff / robe for the mages.

If you talk to the Tranquil guy at Ostagar, he tells you why runes are important.  Basically, runes can not only enchant weapons, but can also be used to make magic staffs.  They basically enable the folding of lyrium.

Didn't donate in my first game, ended up only using the Dwarves - who were wearing standard Dwarven medium armour, like the one Oghren's wearing when he first enters your party.

Second time around I did donate, and there were several Legion of the Dead members among my dwarf army this time.

Could this be a result of my donations?

you gain xp for donating items, I'm not sure on the exact value to xp ratio. However donating elfroots to the Dalish seems to be the most efficient. You can even level up on elfroot alone as the merchant in the Dalish camp has an infinite supply of them.

As for if it has an effect on the final battle I really haven't noticed a difference when donating a little or a lot.
