Your exact proposal is a little complex, IMO, but I love the idea. To be honest I was expecting to have to make some choices along these lines, given all the "Cold Calculus of War" speeches we got in ME3.

Or EAWare could've gone with the original idea for the endings that they scrapped.

Where did that flow chart come from? That kind of stuff would've been very cool, letting your actions have some actual effects on the endgame. Was kinda weird that I told the engineering dudes to go ahead with the upgrade, 'cause I wanted to take care of them and thought it'd matter like all the ship upgrades in ME2. But then...nothing. Lots of unrealized potential.

A lot of people complained when this was suggested after ME2.

"Its a shooter, not a strategy game"

As it stands ME3 missed an opportunity to really, REALLY merge some genres and create something amazing.

The problem with this idea is that it throws out everything that Bioware currently has in ME3. It would've been amazing, no doubt, but it's difficult to implement because there's nothing from the old ending that they have that they can use to support this. They'd essentially have to create new material, AS WELL AS go back into the old material and change everything. It's double the work.

What I'm trying to do is keep the old material in tact, but simply add to it. But, as Grimez pointed out...

Grimez7 wrote...
The crucible is the main grievance people have with the endings and would be awesome if you could think of a different way to approach it.

...I'm thinking of adding onto the ending something that'll satisfy those who are dissatisfied with the current ending. I'm thinking of going a route similar to Arkis' ending, something where, if you get 7 successful choices, you can refuse all 3 choices Starchild presents, and rely on your Total EMS to see if you achieve victory. This'll also address the problem RyuGuitarFreak pointed out, which is that currently, Total EMS using this mechanic is meaningless.

I'll let you know when it's updated, give the thread an extra bump, and change the Topic Title to reflect the new ending! Thanks again for the support, guys!

2 small things. For one, krogan can't be in the fleet section, because they don't have one. Second, you kept the endings. Other than that very nice.

REFUSAL ENDING:

Many thanks to Arkis' Alternate Ending; a lot of lines are inspired by Arkis' work. Link at the bottom of original post.

If the player has made 7 successful choices, after 30 seconds of waiting without walking down 1 of the 3 paths, Starchild says, "Your time is limited. Choose before the Crucible is destroyed." If the player chooses to refuse to walk down 1 of the 3 paths after another 30 seconds, the "Refusal Ending" is activated.

SHEPARD
I... can't make this choice...

CHILD
It is the choice you asked for. It is a means to stopping the Reapers.

SHEPARD
But no matter what, the Crucible damns us! We're nothing without the Mass Relays!

CHILD
The relays are of our construct: our desired path. The new galaxy can choose another path; just as you choose your path now.

SHEPARD
The relays connect us...bring all races together. They bring life together.

CHILD
Only to eventually have that life tear itself apart. War is inevitable. Organics eventually fight one another, creating synthetics as a means to success. These synthetics overrule their organic creators, and advance to a point of no return- galactic destruction. This is the chaos that we prevent. This is the chaos that cannot be stopped...unless you choose.

SHEPARD
.........No. The chaos can be stopped. We've done something that no past cycle past has done before- united. Humans and Turians. Salarians and Krogans. Quarians and Geth. Each achieved peace. Each put aside their differences. Each became brothers and sisters. They've earned the right to prove you wrong. The chaos can be stopped.

CHILD
Peace is ephemeral. Nothing guarantees its length. It is a risk we choose not to take. If you're wrong, the galaxy will die.

SHEPARD
And if you're wrong, then the galaxy is already dead.

CHILD
So you refuse?

SHEPARD
Yeah...I refuse.

Starchild stares for a terse moment.

CHILD
Then the cycle will continue. We will not leave the fate of the galaxy to chance.

Starchild disappears. A Reaper noise emanates. Shepard sees more Reapers flying overhead towards Earth. Shepard collapses.

SHEPARD
Admiral Hackett? Joker? ...Anyone...

We see the crews of multiple ships, the soldiers and charcaters fighting below all in the midst of hectic combat hearing Shepard's broadcast.

SHEPARD
I don't know if you can hear me. But the Crucible is not an option...it won't bring us victory...it can't save us. I know that without the Crucible, defeating the Reapers seems impossible. I know a lot of our friends have died for this chance. I know the end seems near. They've always won by dividing us, pitting us against each other- turning old allies into bitter enemies. But not anymore. This cycle, each soldier puts their life on the line not just for themselves, but for you. They fight not just for their families, but for your families. Their future is not just theirs--it's ours. And it is THAT ideal that will overcome everything the Reapers can throw at us. Together, we can achieve the impossible. Together, we can avenge the fallen. Together, we can put an end to a cycle that has ravaged the galaxy for millions of years, because TOGETHER, WE WILL WIN. So when you look around and see the destruction, tell yourself, TOGETHER, WE WILL WIN. When your fellow soldier falls in battle, tell yourself, TOGETHER, WE WILL WIN. When the fighting seems pointless, the threat seems too strong, and all hope seems lost, remember that we are no longer divided, and that TOGETHER. WE WILL WIN. TOGETHER. WE WILL WIN. TOGETHER. WE WILL WIN.

Slowly but surely we see our war assets looking to each other and pumping themselves up for battle.

The battle that follows is the epic conclusion, as Shepard watches, broken and bleeding, as everything he has put into this unified force throws itself at the Reapers.
The Destiny Ascension obliterating a Reaper with it's main gun before being swarmed over by Destroyers, the Geth armada pulling along side to save her.
The Salarian STG calling in a biotic artillery strike on cluster of Reaper troops.
Wrex and Garrus, on the front sharing a stern moment in cover, before nodding to each other and charging over the
barricade.
The Quarian flotilla scrambling, all guns blazing, trying desperately to form a battleline, as one of the admirals quietly turns to their crew, signalling his ship all ahead full. "For the homeworld. Keela..." their words cut off as the live-ship rams a Reaper, exploding spectacularly and damaging two others.
The Normandy frantically weaving through the wreckage, Joker and EDI yelling warnings to one another as the fleets explode around them.
Tali leading a charge of Geth Primes against a Cannibal gun line.
Miranda & Jack, back to back, fighting off waves of Banshees.
Rachni drones swarming over a Reaper Destroyer by the thousands, pulling it apart from the inside.
Grunt wrestling a brute to the ground and unloading his shotgun into its head.

SHEPARD
Fight for your future. Fight for our future. And above all, give them hell.

OUTCOMES:

Refusal & Loss- This ending occurs if your Total EMS is in the 0--4000 range.

Shepard watches as his soldiers fight to the end. Despite the destruction, every soldier keeps valiantly fighting. Shepard can tell that this cycle doesn't stand a chance.

Your LI stumbles into the room and finds the collapsed Shepard. He/she's badly injured herself, but manages
to lift Shepard up to a sitting position to watch the rest of the battle. Your LI shows Shepard Liara's Time Capsule, and how he/she's recording everything- every fighter's willingness to fight and die for their brothers and sisters in arms, regardless of race. He/she tells Shepard, "I got it off Liara's body (if LI IS Liara, this line is skipped). The next cycle will know how close we came. They'll know how to beat them. Our efforts won't be in vain."

He/she turns the Time Capsule cam on Shepard, who after looking for a long time at his fallen comrades, turns to the camera, and smiles. He says, "Together, you will win. Give them hell,", before dying. Your LI sends the signal protocol to have the capsule buried on multiple planets, smiling too. He/she dies and collapses right next to Shepard.

Refusal & Victory- This ending occurs if your Total EMS is in the 4000-7000 range.

Shepard watches as his soldiers fight valiantly to the end. Every soldier keeps valiantly fighting. Despite the heavy casualties, it slowly becomes apparent to Shepard that victory is in reach.

A cutscene flashes to Harbinger, wiping out a lot of the Hammer Fleet forces. Eventually, the Normandy flies in, with a huge fleet of every race ship behind, and begin to plummel Harbinger. After some resistance, Harbinger falls.

Back on the Citadel, Shepard watches as more and more Reaper ships explode. Some are even seen fleeing, only to be shot down by the Galactic Fleet. They've won.

Your LI stumbles onto the Citadel, looking desperately for Shepard. He/she's pretty badly injured as well. He/she finally finds Shepard and helps him up to a sitting position to watch the rest of the battle. Both of them are smiling, tears in their eyes.

Once the last Reaper is destroyed, thousands of troops cheer, throwing their hands in the air, hugging, and jumping for joy, with buildings still burning in the background. Back on the Citadel, Shepard nods slowly, then slowly shuts his eyes before slumping over. Your LI looks over and catches Shepard before he completely falls over. He/she calls to Shepard desperately, shaking him. Shepard's eyes open slowly.

"We won."

Your LI responds, "Yes. We won. Together."

Shepard then dies in the LI's arms. The LI pulls Shepard close, and cries.

A few months later, a funeral service that Diana Allers promised to throw is being held on Earth, with most of the rubble cleared and even some plantlife regrowing. The crowd is enormous, filled with all races on both sides of a long walkway as Shepard's body slowly progresses on the walkway into his eventual grave. Every squadmate visits the grave, has aterse moment of silence before touching the tombstone and walking away, sort of their way of saying goodbye. Your LI is the last to visit.

Refusal & Total Victory- This ending occurs if your Total EMS is higher than 7000.

Same as above up to the point where Shepard "dies", and your LI pulls Shepard close, and cries.

The Normandy and several other ships land down in front of the Citadel. Several soldiers get out, and start looking for presumably Shepard. They walk towards the beam, in seeming dejection, until (after the proper crescendo in Shepard's Theme hits ala ME1's ending)......

Your LI & Shepard stumble back through the beam, alive. Joker, Liara, and every other ME3 squaddie rush towards you to try and help you out & heal you. Everyone is smiling and cheers are abound. At the very last moment of the scene, Shepard looks ahead and grins.

lol, WHO KNOWS, ASON!

Whatever, Bioware's written themselves into a corner now. Let's find a way for them to back out of it gracefully.

Update w/ changelog coming soon! Thanks for all of the support, guys! Let me know if there's anything you'd change!

You know what the most awesome part of all this work is? That they more than likely won't go ahead with such an ending. And then Bioware will have had their storytelling butts handed to them...by their fans who did this in their spare time....

Which is more than mildly depressing *wipes a man-tear*
