People need to stop wasting their time with indoctrination "proof" video links on blogs and such. Link this instead. It destroys the foundation of Indocrination's relevance.
My only complaint is it doesn't twist the knife as deeply as it could. The loss of narrative cohesion does damage to the ending, but the reason so many people outright reject it or try to theorize alternatives is it breaks the suspension of disbelief. All failed storytelling comes to the shattering of the suspension of disbelief: failed characters, failed writing, loss of narrative cohesion, poor plotting, unconvincing delivery. The fact that Bioware lost narrative cohesion means Bioware tore the audience out of the story and into their own minds, destroying the fictive universe of Mass Effect.

I still can't believe Mac and Casey thought this ending was great. I mean, on some level I can see where they were coming from, in terms of making it philosophical. But the set up is just so poorly done.
Ego or groupthink. Take your pick.
Bonus third option: they had no option, due to marketing, to say anything other than it was amazing. This... actually seems the most probable. It also means I will never preorder another EA game again, and makes me feel quite a bit better about accepting Amazon's offer for a refund for ME3.

Entertainment is a weird thing. You give people a bunch of sensory input, and for some reason some of it sticks and fans develop an unhealthy preoccupation with it, just like I did with Mass Effect. Why? Who the **** knows. I'm not a shrink.
But if someone at Bioware is watching, that was honestly my goal. For some ****ed-up reason that no one can properly understand or articulate, this is really, really important, and I hope that they do the right thing here.
I hope they appreciate how quickly all their various foibles and missteps will be forgiven if they just do right by their fans.
Yeah, I agree. I can honestly live with the endings, and can (and have) speculate(d) with the best of them, but I won't defend them as good or clear writing. But stories are a deep passion of mine and I don't think the ME dev team would have gotten as far as it did if no one on the staff had learned to take constructive criticism.
Thus far, it seems like they've kind of been stuck between the appearance of going, "BLAAAARGGG!! WE HATES AND YOU ARE WRONG AND WE'VE CREATED A NEW ENDING ON OUR OWWWWN!!!"** and the critics going, "Eh, maybe the ending wasn't perfect, but this was still a damn fine game." My thoughts after finishing the game were far closer to the latter and I've spent the better part of my time since trying to understand the hows and whys of over 80% of the fan community being passionately pissed off over the matter. This video manages to provide a sort of bridge between the worlds using philosophy, storytelling, and humor. It deserves to be seen.
**I'm not saying people who don't like the endings are all, or even mostly, responding in this fashion. But the fact remains that this is the stuff that's floating to the top and getting skimmed off. There are so many leaves on the hate-tree growing out of ME3's ending that it's hard to see its roots.

I guess they're going to make some kind of statement sometime in April.... fingers crossed that'll it'll be something that makes sense.
I hope you're right. but all of this talk of "closure" from Bioware is disturbing. We want a NEW ending, not an apologetic half cobled together explination that is shoved down our throats so we'll shut up.

All I can say is, if that's how it goes down (giving an excuse so we shut up), I'm done with Bioware and EA. Maybe I'll actually get things done then...

The thing I want them to appreciate is how (relatively) easy it would be to fix this. Whatever personal or professional investment they have in the current ending could just be discarded without a second thought if they so chose. Let it go! Pretend it never existed!
Also, over the course of the last three hours I've drank like 2/3 of a bottle of Vodka.
My point is, this outcry could all disappear in a second. Do the right thing!

So I went and did a silly thing. I wasted a bunch of what would have
otherwise been productive time making a Redlettermedia-style review of
the ending. Here it be (spoilers for all three games):

Thanks.
I enjoyed it very much.

But in all honesty, next time I have to defend my position, I'm simply going to link this video.

I posted it to their FB page. They thanked me (in traditional fashion)... and about 30 minutes later said they'd almost finished watching it and were forwarding it to the devs. So, for those of you who still have faith that Bioware listens to their fans, there's some hope there. What they decide to do about it, obviously, is their choice.
This is great news for me.

I think the reason this feels really, really important is because stories are really, really important to the human condition. And I don't mean just as entertainment, to distract us from the day to day grind. I mean in the way stories help us put things in perspective, consider new points of view, and remain hopeful for humanity's real future. If stories or characters make us feel happy or sad, they let us know that we're functioning correctly on an emotional level. They're like an empathy/morality check, and when we pass it it makes us feel fulfilled. Sometimes stories can help us cope with unpleasant things in our real lives, like the loss of loved ones, or serious depression, etc.
The better the story, the more we care, because it *is* important.
Mass Effect made me feel more than any other form of entertainment has ever done, and I've gotten really into some TV shows and movies, let me tell you. But Mass Effect was the top of the heap, which made its fall from grace that much more painful for me. If it had never been that good to begin with, I wouldn't care nearly as much that the ending was bad. None of us would.
