This page says it all, if you do everything right and your Shepard has made it to the end, I feel happy ending should be an option.

Umm maybe not a roses and sunshine happy ending where everything is perfect... but ya know, maybe the Normandy crew not being stranded leading to some of your favourite crew members going to die of starvation. Or maybe not destroying the relays would be nice... destroying them does give most pockets of civilization you had just spent the game helping a very low chance of survival.

I'd like an ending where Shepard dies with their integrity intact, their LI lives, and they preserve some sort of recognisable galactic civilisation where it seems like your prior decisions matter.

In the context of ME3, that would count as a happy ending for me.
