tl;dr this is just some thoughts on whether a game is art and who's integrity is on the line.

Any discussion of games as art always strikes sparks. Members of the old media and the critterati say that since games are interactive and thus not totally within control of the artist it is not art. New media members point to games like Bioshock, Shadow of the Colossus etc. Games that can make an artistic statement either within their world or about the nature of gaming as a medium (would you kindly). Art is, of course, in the eye of the beholder. The question is, what then is artistic integrity?
Is it being true to a plan or specific vision? Is it a commitment to not revist a work or to stop making it? Or is it more about the rights of the artist to his/her own work and how such decisions are sacrosanct? Perhaps it is driven by fear of mass marketing and focus groups, that art will fitter away as product.
Many on this forum have declared that a game is a product and as such should please the consumer. How is this different from a DVD having a movie that ends poorly? Is a game a toaster or a painting? Is there some continuum upon which such things can be placed?
Others have commented that since this form of art (games) are participatory, specifically games like Mass Effect, they are in fact co-authored or engender a sense of ownership for the player. At what point does the vision of the developer bend to the will of the player? At what point must the player surrender control of story or characters in order for there to be a story.
For example, should Shepard have the option to decline becoming a spectre or refuse to save the galaxy (que Rorschach saying "and I'll whisper no."). Granted it would be a short game but shouldn't that be an option?
Ultimately times like these just pull the curtain back and let you see that the great and powerful Oz is just a guy in a suit. Someone has to make the dream and someone has to stop it. It's not life and it can't go everywhere. So where should it go? Who is OZ here? I just hope someone finds the red shoes soon.
What is artistic integrity and can games have it?

If it's a self contained game built primarily with one artistic goal, and free, then yes, the artistic integrity of the game is undeniable and messing with it completely invalidates the sole point of its existence.
Once you start making consumable product with your primary goal being profit, and advertise additional product as your final parting message to the player, then AI is non existent.

Artistic integrity in this case are two words used to cover up the fact that they made a mistake on abandoning their normal ending after it got leaked and rushing into making a new one.
