Yeah, OK, but how does this solves the ending's problems, exactly?

Because since the entire series is simply a tale by some dude, it's okay if there are plotholes and the endings are vague and samey, etc.

The only problem is that if Zaeed were telling the story, he would be the only one who survived at the end.

that's exactly what happened tho

Also the kid grew and by the third chapter he learned the meaning of non-asari homersexuality

It's basically a solution to all inconsistencies, plot holes and narrative problems. Unless the child points them out of course... in that case : New DLC for everyone!

That makes all the sense in the world. Give a ****ty end story and make it a tale so that people don't have the right to demand better.

Yea this doesn't really make the ending any less awful. It's up there with "and it was all a dream."

Yeah it's right up there with it was all a dream. The explanation that guy gave is also a load of crap. It's just a cop out and it's been stated that this is just a copy and paste of Deus Ex Machina with a fresh coat of paint. It doesn't explain nothing.

But is it possible/probable that this was how Bioware intended to end Mass Effect?

If you haven't, read the post "linked" on the Escapist. It is a good read. I hate the thought of the game ending this way, but unfortunately I do think it's the most likely scenario. Which means ME is dead to me, and Bioware will have a hard time getting my money for their next title :(

It appears that Bioware wanted to create an actual Arthur legend IRL.

The reason that actual legends are neat is that they evolve over the course of hundreds of ACTUAL years. The bits and pieces added to or lost over time help enhance the mystery (Arthur may never have existed but you get what I mean), and that is what makes those stories fascinating.

Having a player actively partake in the narrative of an epic story like ME and have said player agonize over decisions and read all the codex entries and be fully invested in the world, only to be told at the very end that we were not the narrator, but some saggy old man telling his grandson a bedtime story, and that all of those details are irrelevant, may be poignant to some.

But not to me. That was ME telling Shepard's tale, not Buzz Aldrin.

This is honestly exactly how I percieved the stargazer ending, which infuriated me.

The concept of the monomyth basically destroyed the sensation that my actions and sacrifice had managed to move forward or evolve the condition of the galaxy and its occupants in any meaningful way. The net feedback from the stargazer ending was.....::: GREAT! So after ALL THAT, I've basically bombed the galaxy back to the stonge age so that its current state of civilization can merely ponder of the POSSIBILITY, and not the REALITY of interstellar travel and civilizations. Awesome... Thanks for wasting hundreds of hours of my devout investment in your fiction.

It also difinitively set the stage, imo... for any future experiences in the Mass Effect universe to be prequels and tales of the past, which again diminishes if not destroys the sensation that you are experiencing bold new frontiers unfold at the hands of your invested actions...

It was the stargazer component more than anything that made me take the ME3 disc out of my Xbox and shelve it. I have NEVER done that before with previous ME games. They usually stay in my Xbox for months, NG+, Insanity, etc... But nope... I'm done with ME. I have absolutely no motivation to go back and waste my time because now Bioware has peeled back the 3rd wall and I know that I'm not building anything.... I'm not forging new destinies and braving new experiences... I am instead really just trapped in some syndicated, re-run of galactic events that played out eons ago. LAAAAAME.

I bought in to Mass Effect because IT WAS THE ANTI-STARWARS
It was fresh and progressive... it felt like it was a vessel of science-fiction storytelling that was moving forward from game to game, with the fans helping to chart the creation of a bold new universe... Now I know better.

Not a notion I can agree with, unfortunately. I had this problem with Dragon Age 2, and that was actually deliberately framed from the start as a tale told to others after the event in question had already happened. With Mass Effect - a series that has at no point prior to the very ending even hinted at such - I oppose it all the more.

Specifically, I have a problem with narratives that are framed as such as a justification for covering up plotholes and Things That Make No Sense, because 'well maybe the story teller made that detail up, exaggerated, didn't know, etc'. It's not an excuse to avoid the effort of basic coherency.

The ending happens in the game. You shouldnt have to look on the internet for the actual explanation from someone claiming to know it all

They could have tied up every loose plot hole and we would still be talking about the universe. Making up our own stories

It should've ended with a story book page being flipped to "The End," and then the book being closed.

And then you catch a glimpse of the title of the book, which would read, "Fantasy Space Tales for Babies."

Well, it's just some guy's interpretation now but it does fit what we see in game.

I agree that it sucks.

I was making a joke about how Bioware could've made the ending even more insulting than our entire gameplay having been a tale told by a grandpa.

no point buying dlc then, as if its a story and its now ended then im not gonna buy worthless dlc inbetween the story. we should all be replaying the mass effect trilogy now.

I like this--Mass Effect trilogy is the superposition of all our individual games.

I thought about it along similar lines at one point. The stargazer ending implies the monomyth nature of the trilogy, there is no other way around it.

Edit:

That's so meta. But no ****. By just playing the game...the game is already a superposition.

So, wait...

Everytime stargazer was talking about Miranda he focused intently on certain assets which her catsuit did an obvious job of highlighting?

"What did the Shepard do then?"

"He paused for a moment and did nothing."

"Why?"

"... Dat ass."

I'm sure I missed alot, so I recommend reading his post. I honestly think this is what BioWare intended.

Was it a good idea?

In my mind, no. It certainly doesn't give any more inspiration to play the games. It makes me more disappointed.

If this is the case, Bioware just upped the ante of 'tacked on' endings by 1000%
