I'd like to have a more fun and challenging tactical gameplay experience the next time I play, and I'm looking for suggestions from others to that end. Keep in mind that we're after fun and challenge, not masochism (solo rogues I'm talking about you). Bonus points for themed parties. A few ideas to get started:
- 3 warriors/1 healer (mage uses only healing and defensive magic)
- 1 mage/1 golem (an all-powerful PC mage and Shale against all)
- 3 rogues
- 2 warriors/1 rogue/1 mage (mage uses only non-CC offensive spells)

do not include a tank build in your party and use nothing but cloth for your mage(s) = some tough fights up ahead.

You want a challenge? Do this party then
Yourself : Warrior
Alistar
Oghren
Sten
Thats the worst party you can get right there

I'm running something similar, in spirit, to that right now (it's my first playthrough). DW Warrior PC + Alistair Tank + Leliana + Wynne with healing spells, buffs, and forcefield (only used to get my characters out of NPC-casted crushing prisons. i hate those darned mages).
As far as 4-man parties go, I doubt it gets more annoying than 4 warriors. As Tonya777 said, Warrior PC + Alistair + Oghren + Sten.

I'll second the idea of 3 melee (not necessarily all warriors) and 1 mage parties. I've run a couple of those and it's been quite fun. The combinations I've tried have been PC (offensive sword and shield warrior), Alistair and Shale + Wynne; or a PC, Sten and Zevran + Morrigan combination. Both plenty of fun and a decent challenge in some fights.

Ultimate challenge party :
Nightmare mode
You : Rogue , but a very stupid one (Put ALL your points into Magic)
The dog (Put all his points into magic)
Lelianna (Put all her points into magic)
Zevran (Put all his points into magic)
Wear tier 1 armor and weapons for life , DON'T get melee archer and be sure to make all 3 rogues specialize in archery but never ever get melee archer or arrow of slaying
That right there I just outdid the stupid party I said earlier

Ah forums, hyperbole is quite entertaining. If you want a handicap an easy start is just without wynne. Kill her at the tower w/ morrigan in the party, oh so satisfying. Another would be a limit of spells that you take. There are plenty of ways to do it if you so choose. Personally my favorite is spirits + nightmare - wynne = good times.

Without gimping yourself with crap choices in skill and stats. An interesting party would be:
PC: CC mage, no healing, its a solid character, but more of a support role that will require alot of micro
Dog: Because he cant draw aggro so he is difficult to use in a party towards the end game
Both Rouges speced into archery.
You have no true tank, and the dog can not draw aggro. With no healing, but plenty of CC, this should provide a good challenge to your micro skills in the game without gimping a character just to make them worthless.
enjoy!

Why not solo on nightmare? Anything but an arcane warrior. I am currently playing a cloth mage on nightmare, which is doable so far (haven't done any of the big bosses yet, but a few smaller ones). You basically have to control everything on the map and keep it off you because a few hits can kill you. Oh, and spiders are bad... very bad.

I couldn't solo, I would miss my party members too much!!! Haha. I like the post about the dog not pulling aggro with maybe an archer & two warriors. If 1 wasn't a templar it could be a challenge until the archer got arrow of slaying. I'm using Me (dual wielding warrior), Alistair S&S, Leliana pure Archer, & Wynne AoE & Healer. That on nightmare is a little too easy but difficulty doesn't matter too much to me b/c this game is just so amazing I enjoy easy or difficult.

Then try it with a mage and Lilianna. That is actually a very fun combo because Lilianna can open chests, disarm traps, sneak around to scout, and has some good crowd control with bard and archer. You can also switch between the two when kiting melee mobs while the other attacks. This is actually a very powerful pairing, but would still be more challenging than a full party.
Of course, the ultimate combo would be mage, Lilianna, and the Golem. Probably way overpowered, though.

Three great ways to add some difficulty are use Dog, limit your mages, and/or limit your archers.
I know mages are the most flat-out overpowered characters, but because of AI pulling and AoS, archers are just as cheesy, though not nearly as efficient.

How about a dwarf-flavored group who don't trust mages? PC dwarf, Oghren, Shale. Either origin and class works, though Oghren may be too crude to really be buddies with a noble.

I'm having fun on my no mage nightmare playthrough. PC archer rogue, Lelianna, Shale, and dog.
I usually use Shale in ranged mode to control the battlefield and do aoe, but I will resort to tank mode on dragon fights. This party is fun because I have good aoe stuns on every character and with precise playing take very little damage. I have to pay very close attention to battle, but no situation is impossible and the playstyle is very rewarding.

I played a warrior with dual wield on my first playthrough and used most of the times Alister, Sten and one of the two mages. Against dragons I took Wynne and on most other occasions Morrigan. Ailster was the tank, Sten for "crowd control" and the main character dealing most damage. Wynne was mainly for healing, Morrigan for crowd control. It wasn't a overpowered group, but still it had quite a punch once I learned to use their abilities. Still I made a few mistakes during the game, so the builds weren't as powerful as they could be until the endgame.
Basically the tactic was to use the "stunning" abilites right at the start, followed by the most powerful attacks to kill does stunned, so that the higher enemy numbers would be reduced before the enemy could really strike. Also narrow spaces and terrain usage were very important to be successful. I really enjoyed the fighting.

You could also try an all rogue party (just three) or add in Alistair or another warrior. Or all all archery.
