On a more serious note, I wouldn't mind mermaids, but I think we have enough diversity as is with the dwarves, elves and Qunari. And if we end up going to Orlais, well that isn't really near a big body of water, is it? So seeing mermaids in that setting wouldn't really make sense. I'd have to double check the geography of Thedas to make sure though

I don't know what it says that all of my water-related RPG memories come from EverQuest. Probably nothing good about how I spent my late teenage years.

We need new monsters in DA3, but I don't think mermaids fit the bill.
Vampires, maybe?
Vampire mermaids? No? Too far? I'm okay with anything, so long as they don't sparkle.
Also, I'm pretty sure there was a vampire in DAO. His name was Tamlen.

I think it would be interesting to explore a maritime themed game without resorting to underwater breathing and magic undersea realms, and still not end up in "Pirates!". A kind of real world medieval ship based environment would be the sort of environment that would fit into the DA setting the best, I should think.
Well, I'll stay in my corner dreaming about that perfect imaginary game...

I think one of the devs has up and established hunger demon possessions as their version of a vampire.
Yes, vampires are a specific type of hunger demon abomination. Still, we haven't seen them, unless the definition of vampire can be stretched to include that hunger demon down in the Primeval Thaig.

The Longest Journey and Dreamfall come to mind, for adventure. Brilliant lore. And Quest for Glory V, which had its RPG elements, but you learned to breathe underwater from a book. I can't recall if you could fight underwater, though ...
Then sea based enemies in the old Ultimas. Combat was never that great in the Ultimas so it added variety.
And the Heroes of Might and Magic series. The latest iteration has a water based faction. Among other things, your heroes can run across water. I think the lore surrounding this faction is amazing, and the way it translates into dialogue, choice/consequence and thematic content.
What was that in the latest DA comic? Something about water monsters and drowned people? (I'll go look later.)
(Oh. And Conquest of Elysium 3. Playing it at the moment. One faction can go offshore, which changes strategy in chaotic ways. Love it.)

Aha. What does that mean, exactly, do you reckon? I don't get it.
Like, why did the girls drown? Are the unborn children real, like they're pregnant? What do "beast men" have to do with the girls?
I'd assumed they were water beasts, but maybe that's wrong.

Say some deepsea fisherman caught one and is trying to sell it and has a crowd gathered. Maybe a fight starts, maybe you have to somehow free the mermaid which they wave and go "THANKS here have a shiny trinket!" and of course your reaction is "HECK YES SHINNNNNIESSS *equips* I'ma baller *smug*" And you don't realize the mermaid has already swam off. TADA Mermaids are alluded to, acknowledged but you can't swim or have a water level.

Personally I've never seen mermaids as my little mermaid i always thought of them as probably scary creatures. Could be fun playing them/having to fight them/having a mermaid companion and or having an alliance with them.
I think it would be difficult for the bioware team but this is a challenge i think the bioware team could take up and make some interesting content. I like how Dragon age, while the cliché, still brought in its own uniqueness. Also mermaid content could bring in some good story telling elements and some very interesting new combat.
They may not do this in DA3 but i think it is something they should think about, maybe for DA4 or even the expansion pack for DA3 which they might be able to have more time to develop something this fun.

We want water, BioWare. We want it to rain. We want to see waves. We want to splash around in shallow streams.
Swimming is optional.
THIS is what I want to see. If there is a beach area or a stream I would at least like to be able to go into the water to the waist or something. I thought that the water in DA2 on the Wounded Coast looked wonderful, I simply wanted to have some interaction with it. Rain would also be a big bonus, as would other weather events.
There is a scene near the end of The Little Mermaid when Ursula transforms back into her octo-form and does this vicious crawling thing to snatch up Eric and then go into the water. Something like that I could see as an element to get away from having to swim, but still having the use of creatures like mermaids. I think Neverwinter Nights had a boat travel thing in expansion two, Hordes of the Underdark which was interesting/fun. Boats certainly should be a part of Dragon Age, since we have had our characters travel by boat and known people with their own ships (Isabela, Arishok).
Something like this should be in every game!Oddlyotter wrote...

I think they were just talking about creepy things that live in the swamps. I kind of took the unborn children of drowned girls thing as a reference to ghosts. But I'm not entirely sure, to be honest.

We could certainly do a Dragon Age version of a mermaid-- the same as we do a Dragon Age version of other "standard" fantasy creatures. The problem here would be combining that creature with the requisite aquatic setting. Water involves a number of brand new elements-- like swimming!
Which... cool, yes, but yikes! If there were a lot of other elements that went along with it, and used such features (like an adventure set primarily in the water) then that would be much more plausible.
As long as we don't need fish scales for water breathing.
And don't make them ugly like the DA2 elves.
You could always go with a Selkie, both as a member of the party and for specific underwater areas, much easier to model something that looks like a swimming seal than a mermaid.
Ika Musume (would not want to be the one to model the tentacles for combat) Or do the love scenes....
