Maker's breath, do I ever remember that quest n yep I had about the same thoughts LOLgangly369 wrote...
Oh dear. Whenever I hear about underwater adventures, I think back to all the time I lost while in Ocarina of Time's water temple. And then I go into a fetal position in the corner and cry. 'No, don't make me find another switch! I don't wanna change the level of the water again! Where am I?!! I'm lost! Waaaaahhhhh!'

Bioware can we have an underwater dystopian city in dragon age 3. thank you.
I think you're confusing Bioware with Bioshock.
Though I wouldn't mind a scene where you beat Anders to death with a staff while he shouts "A MAGE CHOOSES! A SLAVE OBEYS!"

It wasn't impossible to build Ferelden at the bottom of the sea. It was impossible to build it anywhere else.
Also mermaids.

"No," says the mother in the Chantry, "Magic must serve man!"
"No," says the templar in the Gallows, "Magic is dangerous!"
"No," says the First Enchanter, "We must bend knee to the Chantry!"
I rejected those answers. Instead, I chose something different... I chose the impossible... I chose...KIRKWALL.
A city where the apostate would not fear the templar, where the maleficar would not be bound by petty morality, where the great would not be constrained by the small! And with the sweat of your brow, Kirkwall can become your city as well.

I am the Warden Anders, and I'm here to ask you a question: "Is a mage not entitled to the sweat of his brow?"

Damn, that just made my day. Magi are the future!

I just had another flashback, this time to the Plane of Water.
I don't know what it says that all of my water-related RPG memories come from EverQuest. Probably nothing good about how I spent my late teenage years.
I would love to know what you think of mermaids in Dragon Age, John! Regardless of how you feel about it I am glad you took a moment to read my request. I gather you do not seem to have very good memories of water levels in video games but all the more reason to be a part of improving this type of thing for others I would say!

Couldn't you have say, a trapped
mermaid that's for sale. Maybe you can talk to it, do a quest or
something. That way it's just stuck in a cageIt could expand a
little on the lore but not give too much detail into it ever being an
encountered race. Kinda like "these things DO exist but your
warden/hawke/whatever DA3 MC is will never ever encounter them."
Introducing them into the lore gradually like you suggest is a great idea because it does not require any huge amount of time or money spent on development for the new swimming mechanics that would be necessary for a playable race. They could instead focus primarily on the lore of the merfolk and the greater story elements which would allow them to find out fan response to their inclusion. I am hopeful this would get a lot more people excited about them but I know from reading here that that may not be the case. Your idea sounds fantastic to me, though!

Mermaids sound like an interesting
addition, especially since it would add another race. I was thinking
that when they approached land, they would magically have legs and be
more intuned to magic than even the elves. I wouldn't mind mermaids in
the DA universe, would be very interesting.
I am happy you think so! Some legends hold that mermaids could change into a more "human" form on land, so that is not far off at all -- sometimes this would be temporary and they would have to return to water or die but other times it did not seem to be a problem at all staying long periods of time on land. There are so many different ideas for Bioware to draw from, change entirely, or build from scratch. The writers for Dragon Age I am sure could come up with something a lot more clever for it than I could anyhow!

Make them look very fish like. Like the ones in Harry potter and the Goblet of Fire.
I'm thinking, blue tinged skin, big black full eyes, white and greenish hair, maybe blue lips and nails...

What about a companion that was a mermaid, is now under some sort of spell to help the new 'hero' and one of 'her' quests would be to help her return to mermaid form and return to her home...just an idea...I think
I think that would be fantastic, but I suppose it's obvious I'd think that. She'd at least have the proper angst points to qualify as a companion character!

-The mermaid encounter could take place in a sunken ship or a flooded/underwater dungeon where an important object/ingredient(for a quest) or a powerful weapon could be found?
-If the player travels by ship, then maybe the ship could get attacked by mermaids and a whole bunch of other sea creatures?
