No mermaids in DA doesn't belong in that universe. Now if BioWare decides to make a pirate game sure bring on the mermaids but no in DA.
I wasn't all for the idea at first...but then I mulled it over and it's suddenly appealing...
Why no mermaids? There are pirates in DA

I hope bioware puts mermaids in the game and as an Easter egg, name the first one we ever meet Claire
I wish I had not read your post because now I really want to play that in game form! This is another great example of introducing mermaids as both characters and lore without exhausting resources on swimming gameplay. I could see her being workedin as a tragic romance for someone who wanted to pursue that. I agree with you about the classes, too, a mermaid being suited for any of them depending how she's written. She would definitely make for a fantastic mage though!SirGladiator wrote...
I really like the idea of
a Mermaid. Maybe as a teammate, you could find her anywhere there's
water nearby, say she's trapped in her human form and can't return to
her home, and so she comes along with you on your adventures. As you
progress, she gives you quests and you can help her return to being a
regular mermaid, and return to her home, or you can convince her to
continue living as a human, with a romance possibility. Maybe if you
help her return home she leaves but sends you a powerful artifact from
her home town, while if she stays she is a powerful and valuable member
of the team. It would be natural for her to be a mage, but she could be
anything really, after all mermaids could easily make excellent
warriors by being more powerful than mere mortals, or they could excel
at stealth and agility. Any of the three classes would work for a
Mermaid (my favorite would be the mage, of course). There are certainly
enough areas with water nearby that a Mermaid could work, there's no
need to get into swimming or actual underwater adventures per se. It
sounds pretty cool!
I would like to hear your thoughts about this if you don't mind. Is there something about mermaids you don't think would fit with the lore of Dragon Age?Eragondragonrider wrote...

Let the storyline determine the creature set, not the other way around.

Swimming/Water takes far too much resources and I would rather see those resources used accordingly.
We want water, BioWare. We want it to rain. We want to see waves. We want to splash around in shallow streams.
Swimming is optional.
This
Rain just makes things more epic.

Why? Why would taking stuff from Arabian mythology be more weird than Assyrian mythology?

Scary looking siren/sea monsters that attack you when you're on a boat travelling from one place to another would be quite a cool concept though... I quite fancy some form of sea battle in DA3 as you travel over seas.

Actually, we agree! I mean, yes, I realise my request is for a new race to be included in the game's universe without any knowledge of what DA has in store for the immediate future. However, I never meant to imply there should be "mermaids for the sake of mermaids." I would hate for them to just be placed there as an afterthought with no benefit to the setting, story, or franchise as a whole. I also am not advocating they be included in the next direct sequel (as I said earlier, I don't even think that is possible). Of course, I would love for them to be included in a DA3 but I am not asking for that so much as I am asking they consider them for the future of the franchise as a whole as they start to think up new races and new ideas.
Mermaids do open up storylines, yes, but so do Dalish Elves and Dwarves. In the hands of the right writers, that can be a good thing! Mermaids, in contrast to those races, deal more with the setting of the sea and would be a perfect way to introduce that history and lore. A part of the reason for my request is because I believe the DA writers will eventually look to sea mythology if the franchise continues on. And when that day comes, whether it be soon or far from now, I would love for them to think about including DA mermaids! And an even longer ways from now, I would love to see them as playable.

Considering DA3 is supposed to cover a LOT of different places, I think it's entirely possible for a sea battle to happen as part of traveling. And new locations will need new creatures. Bioware gets bonus points if Isabela is the one giving the DA3 party a lift.LolaLei wrote...

Also, just because Greek/Roman sirens were bird women doesn't mean they can't be adapted into mermaid-like creatures for the Dragon Age universe. In fact, I'm pretty sure sirens exist in other games in that form...
