From Mass Effect 1:

Klencory:
Location: Milky Way / Kepler Verge / Newton System / Second planet
Description:
Klencory is a rock and ice planet with an atmosphere composed of chlorine and argon. The frozen surface is mainly composed of potassium with deposits of iron.
Klencory is famously claimed by the eccentric volus billionaire Kumun Shol. He claims that a vision of a higher being told him to seek on Klencory the "lost crypts of beings of light." These entities were supposedly created at the dawn of time to protect organic life from synthetic "machine devils."
Shol has been excavating on Klencory's toxic surface for two decades, at great expense. No government has valued the world enough to evict his small army of mercenaries.

So, was the catalyst one of these "beings of light?" Was Shol indoctrinated? Who told him to go to Klencory? If not the reapers, then another ancient race we know nothing about who wanted to give a clue as to the reapers' origins?

Or is it just grasping at straws?

I always hoped we'd find out more about this. But I guess it's also nice having these enigmatic fragments littered around the universe to tease us.

So the beings of light could actually be the reapers (who 'protect' organics from the machine devils they'd eventually create) and the higher being is the catalyst.

Indeed. I like this. Why go out of your way to say the planet isn't important? Misdirection?

That was certainly where my mind went when I read that.

I was thinking about things that had been hinted at in planetary descriptions in the previous games that were never followed up on. I remembered one about crypts or beings of light, did a little searching, and found that about Klencory, and, well, it's all very interesting.

I'd love to go there.

Maybe the beings of light are the race that created the reapers initially, of which only the catalyst remained, being left as some kind of guardian, like Vigil or Vendetta were for the protheans. Or maybe they 'transcended' to become the reapers, the first reapers, and left behind one of them in their original form (a being of light) to oversee them.

It's interesting. Lots of room for interpretation.

If there is something in this (which I'm not saying there necessarily is), it seems to explain why the catalyst looked like it did, at least in terms of being 'a being of light.' (That it took a form familiar to Shepard could have been for any number of reasons--of which I probably favour it merely hooking onto something that was prominent in her consciousness at the time, but it's hard to say.)

An expansion or seriously meaty piece of DLC that takes us to Klencory would be excellent. And, well ... I think it would fall into the category of "bringing clarity." >_>

You're grasping at emergency induction ports.

Mo, we're not. What the hell would you people class as not grasping at induction ports? You want to believe that Bioware ****ed this up so badly. If something is in the game, then it's allowed to be connected until clarified.

Some of you need to stop with the pessimistic herd mentality.

Some very interesting ideas there. I think they'd go with something relatively simple, if it was anything to do with these beings of light - Occam's Razor. Which is why I still think it could be what I outlined above. But who knows?

And yes, grasping at emergency induction ports maybe. But it's fun to think about.

Any conclusions or do we have to actually read it?

Very interesting! I had totally overlooked that planet. Little things like this are what make me think that the ending wasn't completely whack, just rather rushed/badly implemented.

I hope a dev or someone from BioWare would comment on this, way too important to let it go unacknowledged.

Oh I doubt they'll do that. If it is something more important, then they'll want us to find out whenever they decide to tell us more in-game. If it isn't anything important, they don't want to ruin the fun of guessing and so on.

*pats bio on the head*

It's interesting to see what little snippets that were dropped into the game seemingly as red herrings or mere 'flavour' to the universe end up being more important later on.

I only heard parts about it second hand.

I asked because it would be interesting if you didn't, yet called Catalyst a guardian. Why? Because in part of the leaked script (especially older parts with general outlines), Catalyst IS being called The Guardian by Bioware. And most reffered to him like that in the spoiler group before the release.

Anyway, beings of lights may still be Prothean VIs, but something tells me this indeed may be connected to Catalyst. Klencory may very well be a DLC planet which will give more data on the Catalyst's race/Reaper origins. The wording does indeed sound like deliberate downplaying of its importance, yet stuff like "he's waiting for husks with his merc army" sounds like an already lined-out gameplay plan.
