So Where Does Mass Effect Go From Here?

Okay. First of all, if this is one of those questions that's already been asked to death, please let me know. I don't want to retread on old ground here. I've just been waiting for a while now to see others talking about this and I haven't seen it.

Now the developers and EA have said that it's garuanteed that the Mass Effect univers will continue after this, there will be more games. Mike Gamble said on his Twitter page a while back, a few days after the sh*tstorm started over the ending, "Hardest. Day. Ever. Seriously, if you people knew all the stuff we are planning…you’d, we’ll – hold onto your copy forever." I'm sure most everybody remembers this.

So where does the universe of Mass Effect logically go from here? If we can put aside all the anger and frustration for a second, and believe me, I am not a fan or a supporter of the ending as it stands now, I'd like to know what anybody else thinks about the future of the overall storyline.

Shepard's story was always going to finish in the third game. So the biggest thing the developers wanted to do for future games was to destroy the mass relays. With the relays destroyed, interstellar travel becomes a dog and a half to perform. I'd like to know if anyone has any theories on what the developers had in mind for ME4, or if it would even be in the same genre (Action/RPG-hybrid).

So does anybody else have any thoughts on this?

C'mon, anybody? I'll give it one bump, and then leave it alone and go back to talking about how much everything sucks.

To gamestop for in store credit?

I would say 'rebuilding' of the universe?

To the bankruptcy office hopefully, taking EA/BW with them.

It'll take awhile, but thats fine. The Reapers took a few years to get here afterall.

In the same drawer I put Dragon Age 2, Bioshock 2, and Deus Ex: The Invisible War.

I get the feeling it's going to become more and more action oriented. I bet the next ME game will be a complete multiplayer thing.

Which makes me sad. I wish it was more exploration and RPG oriented.

They either swallow their pride and provide a new ending, or they plunge into gaming hell.

Yes, that is something they've been leaning towards already, with the gameplay constantly leaning more and more towards all-out action over RPG-diversity. It's unfortunate to say the least.

This was my thought any stories after those endings could be good but I thought I had heard that they didn't want to do a game after Mass Effect 3, so that leaves them with prequels which no matter how good the game/story is to that it would be forever tainted by the single fact that Mass Effect 3's ending would make it almost pointless, I'm saying pointless not in the context of the history or lore of the series but what would be the point to buy it? It would never work as a RPG. A shooter maybe but I still wouldn't see the point.

Functionally any Mass Effect 4 would have to occur in one of two ways; shortly (on a relative scale so probably a couple decades/centuries) after the end of ME3 or centuries later.

If we take the shortly after approach then we're likely looking at the rebuilding of the universe style game with perhaps a focus on either exploration as a theme or inter-species conflict resolution. It's also possible to go with a rebuilding theme though unlikely.

If we're talking centuries later deal then there's really only two approaches. Either everything is the same and they managed to repair/remake mass relays (thus invalidating the entire point of destroying them) or everything is completely different and really the only connection is the name of the series (or the implication that it's in the same universe).

Where has everyone been hearing about this 'only do a prequel' stuff?! If that's true, if anybody can provide some concrete evidence, I'll effing walk out the door on Bioware right now. I have no interest in going back in time, knowing how it all ends and that my Shepard was responsible for it.

I don't see how it can go anywhere. Destroying a Mass Relay destroys the system it was in. We just thrashed the Galaxy.
