Having played through Mass Effect 3, l have come to my own conclusion of the meaning behind the ending, and therefore this take on how Bioware can wrap the story of the Shephard assumes my take on the ending is indeed correct.

If you've been able to get the ending where Shephard takes a deep breath among a rubble of rocks, you also realize that Shephard in that moment may be in no condition to fight-and your squadmates at that moment may be as hurt as you or worst.  I see a great opening for Bioware to do something drastically different with future content that would allow players and fans of the series to really choose their ending for themselves and their squad.  Before the last mission you're able to say goodbye to your old squadmates-most of which if not all are fighting in London with you- this fact really opens way to some campaigns where you can play as some of these important characters and choose their fate by allowing you to take control of their actions.

Their actions of course in true Bioware fashion should be closely related to whether Shephard can get up from that rubble or not and go on to fight for them and fight for the fallen.  If multiplayer has shown me anything, it is that playing a Krogan or a Drell(rest in peace Thane) can be an awesome addition to the game.  I see no better way for Shephard's crew and allies to show their commander that they're willing to follow him into places where Man,Asari,Drell,Turian,Krogan,Quarian,Salarian,Synthetic dare not go were it not for his/her leadership.  I believe something like this will let players finally seal that bond between Commander Shephard and his/her crew/allies/friends/love.  After all Shephard has put himself/herself in danger for others without thinking twice, perhaps it's time others are allowed to do the same.

This is just one way to follow up the ending of ME3 and to me it would truly give me closure to not just see the choices of Shephard's squad but to experience them and perhaps see the ME universe through someone else's eyes.
