Why did we get Diana Allers?

Why not Emily Wong or Khalisah Al-Jiani? Getting on Khalisah's good side or butting heads with her on the Normandy could have been sweet. Emily Wong would have been awesome too, since we actually know her.

Instead we get an sub-average looking newcomer with a fairly dry personality. I mean, I didn't hate her or think she detracted from the game. I appreciated any time I talked to her actually since it felt like a legitimate link to everyone looking up to Shepard.

As a person, though, I didn't connect with her nearly as much as the other two reporters.

My theories are all sinister, and knowing IGN for the sensationalist **** media outlet it is, probably right. In case you don't know, Diana Allers is based on and voiced by one Jessica Chobot, a "correspondent" for IGN.com. I saw her enough on my Xbox Dashboard involuntarily to know who she is. Her claim to fame involves licking a PSP suggestively.

Any speculation that I might posit would only get me into trouble.

I can't think of any positive reason for choosing to add a writer, a hot writer at that, from a game review site into the game while simultaneously announcing the death of a long-running character in the series via Twitter. I definitely can't understand keeping the fact she was collaborating on a game she was going to be in, WHILE DOING PREVIEWS OF THAT GAME, under wraps for over half a year.

I want to give the benefit of the doubt here, but I honestly and truly can't figure out what including her, AND HER REAL LIFE FACE, is intended to do.

This is, in my humble opinion, a very dumb and very conflict of interest decision.

The answer is simple. To bribe IGN for a good review. They picked the likeness of one of their reporters, and gave her the job as Voice Actor as well.. so IGN could write their glowing review and would call the fans who'd be unhappy about the game dimwits that wouldn't know art if it would jump right into their faces.

To meet some terrible voice acting quota or something...

They killed off Wong in a twitter feed and Al-Jiana would not be trusted enough to be allowed on most people's Normandy.
I understand wanting someone new for the "war news blah blah" but she served no purpose and the few times I even gave her the chance she actually brought me out of the game because she's the only one I could hear the voice acting and not the character I was talking too.

In the end there is no excuse good enough and it just cemented IGN as the worst game site out there in many eyes.

They modeled her after Chobot as well as have her being the VA.

LOL it does look like a big circle jerk going on there.  Its almost like they have a sign in their treehouse that says "no credibilty allowed"

Moneyyyyyyyyyyyy, even though I didn't mind her, she definitely was a waste of space, IMO.

Yes, she just looks...wrong... in the game. She also dresses strangely and has terrible voice acting. Even with this information about IGN, I can't fathom why they'd put her in the game.

Promotional material.... promotional material that I hate, Why give us some Vita licker over some one that is already integrated in the lore that everyone loves.

They modeled her after Chobot as well as have her being the VA.

The results are mixed. Her face has this hideously uncanny effect where the top half of her face from the cheekbones up does not animate as smoothly, or as much, as her rubberized mouth does. It looks like she is wearing someone's face-skin, or like she's had way too much Botox so that she retains only the barest minimum of expressionary ability in her musculature.

Everything about her 'character' screams shoehorned. And while I doubt it was so that Bioware could bribe IGN into good reviews, I do believe it was so that IGN would get some promotion. In a way, it worked, because word of mouth gets around as to who this robotic witch is that wants onto my Normandy.

I imagine some deal was made to wedge her in the game.

It's unfortunate. Her VA was pretty bad and I would have much preferred a character I had known from the previous games like Wong, but BioWare decided to kill her via Twitter. <_<

She is needed for Shepard to unlock the codex entry "Desperate Measures" in the second cabin interview.

Now if only they would kill off twitter via twitter. Since earth is being attacked in all. Say reapers blew up the servers or something.

Well she's really really out of place and seemed forced! I can't find references about her with regard to the other Normandy crew except for that interview with a soldier in Zaeed's quarters but aside from that I can't recall Traynor or EDI talking about her.

Oh i doubt it was for Reviews as well, but its just so convinient that IGN seems to be at the forefront (yet again) to call everyone disagreeing with Bioware entitled dimwits who don't know art.

So yeah maybe not as much a bribe as it was a payment for their work with Dragon Age 2, in supporting the statment about how we fans are dimwits. I don't know, but honestly... right now i am not having a very high opinion of Bioware or their intentions and am inclined to assume the worst.

Edit: Though that theory i can't write or i'll probably banned. So i am going with bribe :)

DING! DING! We have a winner. You can also see how IGN acts about the ending controversy, basically calling people whiny entitled kids and defending Bioware as if it was their employer.

So there goes their journalist integrity out of the window, if there was any to begin with.

This is of course a conspiracy theory, but one I find very plausible.

Aside from the voice acting, I don't understand why they got Miranda right and Allers wrong. I didn't get the uncanny valley feeling with Miranda, although she does break the illusion somewhat.

They should just stop trying to mimick real life faces.

Traynor talks to her if nothing else. She was chatting up Allers twice when I visited. Not in person but over intercom.
