I am a PC player, so my reaction to this revelations could be described in two words: "Yarr harr" <- if they REALLY try it, sorry. It's not playing fair anymore.

And all this nerd rage over the endings and people saying they'd be willing to fork over another 20 bucks for "More of an ending" is only fueling the likelihood that this crap will be commonplace in the decades to come.

When are gamers gonna say no to paywalls hiding locked disc content, and first day DLC? If there was 1/10th the outrage over that stuff than there were over the endings, we won't be shelling out $100 dollars for a game 10 years from now.

The current trends in gaming:
-Day 1 DLC
-Rushed packages
-Used games need to buy codes to get the full package
-anti-used game sentiment entirely
-anti sharing
-the notion of renting rather than owning

The gaming industry is NOT suffering. I don't buy any of the crap they say about used games destroying the market, mainly because used games have been around for years and we are still getting top-quality products from developers. All I see are people trying their damnedest to control a market and their consumers.

When an industry begins to employ draconian policies meant to enforce strict control, it is usually a sign that their business model has become flawed in the wake of new technologies.  The music industry is a prime example of this.  Most of the big publishers who failed to realize the potential of digital distribution in the late 90's/early 2000's and adapt their business models to it are now suffering immensely.

You don't win clients by punishing them for trying to save money.  It doesn't work and will never work.  You win clients by offering incentives for buying the full package.  In this case, videogame publishers have removed features which should already be included (multiplayer, endings) and offer them back to customers as incentive.  That is not incentive.

An example:

I walk into a restaurant I've frequented many times and prepare for my meal.  Much to my dismay I find that there are no chairs at my table.  I ask the waiter why there are no chairs.

Waiter: "Well sir, we find that clients tend to linger around much too long when they are sitting down and this lowers our hourly revenue.  We find that having no seats causes patrons to eat much quicker and clear room for new clients."

Me: "...but, I've always had a chair when eating here before."

Waiter: "Yes sir.  We value your patronage, and because of this we are excited to inform you that for a mere ten dollars, we will provide you the added value of a chair with your meal!"

Me: "....but the chair used to be free!  I don't think I like this."

Waiter: "Well I guess you just don't understand how the restaurant business works then sir."

DLC is a hit and miss issue. I don't think of From Ashes as a negative in any way. It was included with the Collector's Edition as an extra squadmate. CEs have extra content all the time. Prototype 2's new CE comes with the first DLC. Black Ops had 4 previous zombie maps. Gow3 with Adam Fenix.

Bioware's mistake comes in 2 forms. They should've either held the release of Javik off for a month or so, OR included him and then charged 69.99 per standard copy of ME3, 89.99 for N7 CE.

BUT they wanted people to have the option to have From Ashes day one. Stupid them for giving their gamers options.

------------------

Also, DLC issues depend on the situation. Asura's wrath is a bit much. I however don't mind the concept of extending games past their initial disc entry. I can't count the number of times I wished a game wasn't over when I finished it, and the thought that there could still be more to the story released timely (not years and years later) is pretty nice. I think people take that for granted as much as it's claimed the companies take fans for granted.

The online pass thing is annoying for retailers, but really only that. You want to purchase the game used? Cool, if it has an online pass it's going to be less than the usual used games of the same calibur. IE: ME3 and Uncharted 3 are both 59.99 games. ME3 without a pass goes for 47.99 and Uncharted goes for 54.99 used. Consider loyalty card and you're looking at 43.19 and 49.49. You might pay the ten dollars for a pass and end up at 53.19, but that's not the retailer's fault and if anything they're pretty generous because Uncharted 3 is supposed to have an online pass as well, but said retailer gives it to consumers for free with pre-owned purchase, just like Reckoking's online pass, Batman's Catwoman add-on, and others.

Not everyone wants to play online though, and that actually gives people more choices. All those people that swore off ME3's multiplayer can now purchase it for less than the normal pre-owned price.

Also you really need to reconsider something: A LOT of you have become spoiled by video games. Do you really think the entirety of ME1-3 is worth, at each's original value, $180? I spent only 40 on ME1 and ME2, and I'd have spent a lot more if I could have.  There is the case that not all games should be priced the same. Something like The Darkness 2 should've probably been forty at original price, considering its lack of replayability. But something like Fallout, Elder Scrolls, or Mass Effect should probably be priced more towards $80 than $60.

This just goes to show us that we are at a potential turning point in gaming business practices. We are being manipulated and abused by the developers at this point, and we have the option of laying down and taking it, or making our voices heard.

If you're a member of other game communities that are suffering this kind of abuse, let them know about Hold the Line, and get them to find their own rallying cry. For too long we have simply accepted sub-par products without holding the developers accountable because we continued to pre-order their products. This must end, and we must demonstrate that we are not the guaranteed asset that they apparently think that we are.

Remember that we, as consumers, hold the power in this relationship, and never think otherwise. The only power that the developers have over us is the power that we give them. They cannot take the Line unless we give it to them, and do not give them a damned inch.

I agree with this, to long us gamers have been divided, over stupid little arguments like which system is better, that needs to change. If we want these companies to treat us gamers with more respect, they need to learn that they serve us, not the other way around.

I'm kind of surprised that in all of this discussion, the OnLive gaming service is never brought up.

As much as I like the idea behind OnLive (it saved my sanity while away from home with a crappy laptop), I could never see myself buying a game from them at full price. You think Origin or Steam is bad? At least with those the game is actually on your computer. With OnLive you stream the game to your computer like an interactive youtube video.

It makes an awesome rental service though.

im honestly expecting a game to come along soon that they charge you a bit for basically a demo and then you buy dlc addon packs with adventures, etc to expand it into a full game.

as for the capcom stuff. i have to admit they arent afraid to experiment with customers and seeing how far they can rip people off before your average consumer goes NO MORE

in regards to the ps4 ( i refuse to call it an orbis) it sort of defeats the purpose of having a console if you have to put up with all the downsides of a pc. no used games,, etc

And game companies complain about piracy. lol. this is WHY people pirate.

this ^. I would like to see some true numbers on piracy and games that pull s*** like this. I personally avoid buying anything from companies that milk their paying customer with content already on disc.

It IS hard to argue with pirates when game companies pull that kind of stunt.

No, but you have to pay to unlock Chris and his missions (or purchase the collectors edition, he comes with that).

Seriously I hope that doesnt happen!

Expanding the ending of a game with dlc is not really a new thing, developers has released expansions over and over that expand their games. I never heard of anyone crying when they released episode 1 for Half Life 2. I know that might be exactly the same, but still.

I actually hope Bioware release an DLC with the "true ending", maybe call it alternate ending so that people wont get so angry.

Rape of the Consumer.

The video game industry is already the highest grossing entertainment industry in the world, yet they still feel like they have to combat used games and put out ripoff DLC at the cost of thier fans.

It looks like we need to hold off on buying a game until it's a year old or so and get the GOTY  or "Gold" editions.  Does the industry not see that we'll do that?

So I guess they want you to pay $60 for the regular game and then after you get all the dlc you actually pay $ 180

And they want collector edition people to pay $100 for the game, artbooks, cd, whatever then shell out more for all the dlc and end up paying $ 220

That sounds like a future in gaming I want to be apart of....They're making themselves irrelevant and will eventually people will stop buying what they offer.

I understand your frustrated but please dont compare this to rape, it more like the elderly getting scammed because they trust the other person
