It's simple. If you must play multiplayer to get the "best" ending, that means people who buy used games "must" buy the online pass. Also, EA probably figures that at least some people will buy some Spetre packs once their forced into multiplater.
You must raise your galaxy readiness for the 'best' ending. You do not need to do so by playing multiplayer. If you own a iPad/Pod/Phone you can download the Mass Effect Datapad app for free and raise your galaxy readiness by deploying fleets there. I got my galaxy readiness to 87% without a single minute MP.
Substituting MP with a crappy app? First that assumes I have a smart phone and number 2 it assumes I'm willing to buy the game and then buy the app on top of it (as opposed to playing MP where if I buy the game new I don't have to pay further (discounting Xbox sub).
I don't say it's a good idea and I would much like an ingame method of raising the galaxy readiness value. Maybe as a result of your choices in ME1/2 (Save Feros colonists > +5% galaxy readiness, etc.). Would be much better.
What I'm saying however is: You do NOT need to play MP if you have a chance to download the FREE app to your IOS device. As some people can't play MP due to bandwith issues, etc. this might at least be an alternative for them.
Not that it really matters given the state of the current endings...
